The color of a lions coat is primarily yellow-gold, while the color of its mane ranges from blond to reddish-brown to black.

We colored the lions coat with yellowish brown and we used a darker shade of brown on the mane, as seen in the illustration above.

You can choose to color your lion using the same colors or handpick a unique set of colors. Either way, were sure the colors will turn out beautifully!

Easy Steps To Draw A Lion

Our three pages of lion drawing steps are super easy to follow; you will soon be drawing lions grab your pencil and lets get started:

  • Lets start with the head. Draw a circle and then a rounded rectangle slightly above it. Notice how the rectangle is smaller at the top.
  • For the lions ears, draw two circles and erase extra lines.
  • Now lets draw the mane! Add eight circles around the head, and erase extra lines.
  • Draw the body by adding a drop shape with a flatter bottom.
  • Add two arched lines straight down in the middle these are our lions paws.
  • Now add two big ovals and two smaller horizontal ones.
  • Draw a curved line and add a mango-like shape on the top.
  • Lets draw our lions face: add half circles on the ears, small ovals for the eyes, and a triangle for the nose.
  • Well done! Get creative and add different details.
  • Step 3 Next Draw The Front Legs Of The Lion

Right underneath the lions head, draw two legs side by side with three visible paws at the bottom.

The leg can be structured by simply drawing two parallel vertical lines with three curves alongside each other to create the paws.

Repeat the same step on the opposite side to create the right leg. At this point, both front legs of the lion should be complete.

Step 4 Draw The Organic Outline Shape Of The Lion

Now refine the construction line drawing into the more organic shape of the lion by adding the smaller bends and curves along its body.

Afterwards draw in the second front and back leg on the far side of the lion. Draw these slightly smaller than the legs on the set of legs facing towards the viewer to show some perspective.

For a detailed explanation of perspective drawing see:

Step 4 Draw The Smaller Details Of The Face

Now work on the smaller details of the lions face.

Add the inner curves of the ears pretty much following the outer curves.

Draw the bottom part of the mouth with the outer corners sort of hanging down.

Add the pupil, reflection area and indicate the upper shaded area inside the eye. Also draw the curves of the upper and lower eyelids as in the above example.

Add a tiny split towards the bottom of the nose as in the above example.

Carve Out A Simplified Version Of The Skull

Flatten out the top of the head where the circle and line meets. Just below is where the eye socket sits. At the back of the skull, a small part should be sticking out, whereas the front has a groove carved out for the big nose. Follow the outline of the jaw as it cuts up into the cheek bone, which sits directly below the eye socket. Draw in the massive teeth in the front of the skull.

How To Draw A Lion Face And Body

We all know that the king of the jungle, the mighty lion is an amazing animal and one of the largest alive on our planet. They are the number one predator in Africa and can hunt pretty much any species that we can find on the African plains.

Lions are symbols of strength and have been used in artwork for a long period. Understanding how to draw a lion is important for any artists because you might never know when you want to make a statement and need a symbol of power. Even in ancient times, they were used as a reference for a different type of drawings.

So, we now know that drawing a lion is cool and it has its challenges so lets understand better how we can do it with the help of tutorials.

Step 2: Add The Mane And Ears

Art: Margherita Cole | My Modern Met

After you’ve centered the head of the lion in the t-shaped grid, you can add a pair ofsemi-circular ears to the top corners of the square. Next, we’ll sketch the mane. Depending on the age and size of your lion, the mane can look any number of ways. However, for this tutorial, we’ll be drawing a luxurious layered mane.

To do this, lightly draw a heart shape around the lion’s head, ending it at a point a little ways below the chin. Wrap a second layer around the first if you want to draw a thick mane. Remember to round the mane over the lion’s head and ears so it puffs up at the top.

Step 5: Add Texture To The Drawing

Art: Margherita Cole | My Modern Met

What is a lion without his mane? Take some time at this stage to flesh out your mane sketch with more textured lines. While you’re at it, return to the face and add some finer details to the eyes and nose. Even if you don’t want your drawing to be too realistic, adding a few extra lines here and there will add a lot of depth to the illustration as a whole. a technique that involves adding numerous parallel linesis one easy way to do this.

Next, it’s time to demarcate the black areas of the drawing, which will be the inside of the eyes, the pupils, the lips, nostrils, and inside of the ears.

Step 5 Draw The Facial Features & Toes

Add the facial features and toes.

In this view you will generally only be able to see two or three of the lions toes on each foot. You can outline each toe with just one curved line.

Draw the lions eye with the top part of the iris/and pupil covered by the top eyelid . Add a pair of lines that defines the shape of the inner end of the eye that run slightly down the snout and join some distance away from the eye.

Add the nose with a wider front that then transforms into a nor marrow curve.

Make the front mouth/lip area slightly indented into the head and draw the shape of the mouth itself first in a downwards and then in an upwards slope.

Step 2 Draw A Lions Mane

Well, this simple outline drawing of a lions mane looks like a tree leaf that almost anyone is able to draw. Dont worry soon this tree leaf will turn into a lions head with the beautiful mane around it!*Make sure that the horizontal line is a bit above the torso and check the overall proportions of the head and body.

Step 6 Now Draw The Pair Of Ears Of The Lion

Within the mane of the lion, draw an inverted U-shaped figure on each side at the top of its head.

Afterward, close off the figure by drawing a line on the bottom. This creates the left and right ear of the lion.

The lions pair of ears are typically rounded and standing upright, so keep that in mind when drawing the ears of the lion.

In this tutorial I will show you how to draw a realistic lion without too much theory or explanationsjust a step-by-step process that will teach you a few useful things about drawing animals from scratch. You can also use this technique to draw other big cats!

Step 7 Draw The Mane & Additional Fur Clumps

The shape of a lions mane is fairly random. Generally the hair around the top of the head tends to tick out facing slightly more forward and then transition into curving backwards along the shape of the neck. The hair at the bottom of the mane will either hang down or point slightly backwards.

The entire mane will basically consist of small fur clumps of various sizes. Try and draw the clumps with slightly different curves and twists but at the same time try and respect the general direction of the hair as described above.

Once you are done with the mane you can add some hair along the belly area. Afterwards you can also add small clumps of fur along the elbow area towards the top of the front leg as well as around the top of the backwards facing toes.

How To Draw On A Tiny Budget: Single Pencil Drawing

Probably the best tutorial that teaches you how to draw a lion on a budget. It is very likely that you already have what you need inside your house. Its a great way to test and see if you really want to draw lions and if the answer is yes you can invest afterwards more in your tools. Grab a sheet of paper and a pencil and start drawing.

Step 7: Go Over The Drawing In Ink

Art: Margherita Cole | My Modern Met

To finish your drawing in ink, pull out your favorite pens, and slowly trace over your final drawing. You can create interesting line variation in your illustration by using an array of different pen nibs. Once youve gone along all of the graphite lines, consider adding texture to the lion’s thick mane. If you have time and patience, you can use to carefully shade the mane.

Finally, once youve given the ink ample time to dry, erase any remaining pencil lines. Congrats! You now have a magnificent portrait of a lion.

Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the lion’s body. They don’t have to be perfect. They’re just guides.

Step 2: Draw an egg shape above the right circle as a guide for the lion’s head.

Step 3: Draw two intersecting lines inside the head. These will help you place the lion’s facial features.

Step 8 Draw The Nose And The Mouth Of The Lion

Draw a sideways oval shape on the bottom part of the lions face. This outlines the snout of the lion, where we will be drawing its nose and mouth next.

For the nose, draw an inverted triangle shape. Then, right underneath the nose, draw a short vertical line with an upward curve on each side to create the lions mouth.

Add details on the lions ears by simply drawing an inner figure following the outline of each ear. This creates the appearance of the inside ears.

    How To Draw Lion

The lion is one of the largest predators in the feline family. Drawing a lion is not easy, if only because we rarely see a lion. The cat certainly looks like a lion, but still, she is not a lion.

The lion is not much different from its tiger and leopard counterparts. The same proportions of the body, except for the lush mane and tassels at the tip of the tail. Drawing a lion from the first drawing lesson may not work, then take a closer look at your cat first and even draw it.

Then it will be easier for you to complete the drawing of a lion. In this lesson, we will learn how to draw a lion in stages, with a simple pencil. Lets start, as always, with the initial contour shapes. You need to draw two circles for the torso and one smaller for the head. The circumference of the front of the lion is slightly larger, and it intersects with the circumference for the head.

When the drawing is done in stages, with a simple pencil, you can always correct the wrong lines, so draw boldly, and if there are mistakes, correct them. In drawing a lion, the most difficult stage is the initial one, because you determine the main proportions of the future picture.

I made an extra step on purpose as drawing the lions head is not easy. Lets take a closer look at the lions face .
