Note: Remember to use an HB pencil with light pressure for all steps so you can easily erase your guidelines in the end. I used a lot of pressure in the examples so you can clearly see what Im doing.
I know there are a lot of measurements in this tutorial, but I think its very important, especially if youre a beginner. Once you understand proportions you can try this tutorial again without the ruler method.

Going down from the circle that represents the top of the head draw the bottom of the face similar to what is shown in the example. As this is a stylized cartoon character this part of the face will be drawn smaller than in real people with a pointier chin.
Erase the bottom part of the circle after you are done so that the head looks like the example in the next step.

How To Draw An Anime Girls Head And Face
This tutorial explains how to draw a an anime or manga girls head head and face from the front and side views.
Before you begin drawing its a good idea to outline the defining features of the anime style.
Most female anime characters tend to have big eyes, a small mouth, nose and chin and a fairly round face. The lips are usually either very lightly defined or not drawn at all. The hair is usually drawn in clumps instead of individual strands and often tends to have a somewhat spiky look.
If drawing using pencil and paper be sure to make very light lines for the initial parts of the tutorial as you will need to erase some parts later.
If you would also like to try drawing a more realistic looking anime character check:
Using Cute Facial Features In Drawings
In this section, well explain what to keep in mind when drawing cute faces.
Outline of the face
Usually, cute faces are depicted as young faces, and young faces are usually drawn with round shapes. You could also call it a puffy face.
Make sure to draw the cheeks with round lines to naturally depict innocence and cuteness.
The shape and size of the eyes
The eyes are what gives that first impression, so lets learn how to draw them!
There are many ways to draw eyes, but the round shape is also important here, so lets use them to draw the eyes too. You can also change the look of your character simply by stretching the eyes vertically! This will give a different kind of cuteness to your character.
Usually, the width between the eyes should be about the same as the width of one eye. However, by making this distance a little longer, you can give a stronger sense of youth to your character. Be careful not to overdo it though. About 1.3 times the width of the eyes should be just fine.
This may sound obvious, but drawing the nose as a dot or not drawing it at all is the best way to show cuteness! You can also make it cuter by placing the nose a little higher than usual.
Shape of the mouth
The mouth is also an important part of the characters overall impression. It tends to show how the character is feeling.
Exaggerating the shape of the mouth is also a good way to show youth.

The Lower Eyelid And The Pupil
The lower eyelid describes a slightly flatter arc than the upper one. It does not start directly at the end point of the upper eyelid. The upper eyelid goes a little further outward. In addition, the lower eyelid can curve slightly upwards on both the outside and inside. In a laughing person, this outer curvature is particularly pronounced because the laugh muscles push the outer edges of the eyes upwards.
Depending on how important this facial characteristic is to us, we can draw this line several times.
Place the pupil so it lies against the upper eyelid. This creates the effect of the eye looking directly at us.

Drawing The Female Head
To help you make sure that both sides of the head will be of equal width and that the facial features in later steps will be evenly spaced start your drawing by first making a vertical line through the middle of your drawing area. Next draw a circle for the top part of the head and from that project two lines that first go to the jaw area and then curve inwards and go down again at a sharper angle to finally form the curve of the chin.
As this is a female face for the sake of this tutorial we will make the chin fairly small and narrow.
Add Details And Patterns To The Hair
Complete the look by adding streaks on the hair to add texture on the drawing. Draw multiple long lines down the length of the hair to create an illusion of individual strands.
Here, you can see the drawing of a girls face nearly finished! The only thing its missing is a dash of colors to complete your artwork!
Finally, here is the most exciting partfilling in the colors for your awesome drawing! This is the part where you can show off your artistic skills and your ability to mix and match various colors.
Start by coloring the face. To create a skin tone color, mix the colors red, yellow, brown, and white. Depending on the complexion youre aiming for, you may want to add more of a specific color than the rest.
After coloring the skin, you can move on to the hair and the eyebrows, which should be the same color. Which hair color do you imagine would look best to your drawing? Perhaps a brunette or simple black hair? You can also use more vibrant colors such as pink, purple and more! Its all up to you!
Have fun playing with colors and watch as your girl face drawing ultimately comes to life!

Add Some Shadows & Finish The Girl Drawing
To make the drawing look a little less flat you can add some very basic shading by darkening some areas of the drawing. You can either do this by going over parts of the colored areas with a regular pencil or by using a darker shade of whatever color you chose.
Generally the way shadows appear on anything is based on the lighting. To keep things simple the face of this girl will be shaded as though she is either outside on a sunny day or indoors in a well lit room.
Add the shading in the following places:
- Small shadows around the eyelid areas
- Shadow in the inner parts of of the ears
- Tiny shadow below the nose
- Shadow on the entire upper lip
- Large shadow on the neck shaped similar to the chin
- Big shadow on the hair in the area between the sideburns hair and the neck
Final Artwork Of The Hair
Once your hand gets used to the fast movements, lines, and curves of the hair strokes, it is much easier to define a clear, sweeping hairstyle. For the final drawing of the hair, it is recommended to use a separate layer again. Here we can orientate ourselves on the pre drawn hairstyle and later, as already mentioned, simply hide it. If necessary, we can also erase hair that is too long and protrudes into the face without erasing the face itself. It’s worth experimenting with different line widths and degrees of coverage when drawing the hairstyle. In our picture I have emphasized the individual strands with a darker line, while within the strands the indicated subdivision lines are much lighter and less prominent. The most important thing when drawing hair is still the line speed. And fortunately, in digital drawing, any imperfect stroke can be undone until it fits.

A More Detailed Written Tutorial On How To Draw A Cartoon Girls Face
Step 1 Draw two basic shapes for the eyes, cartoon eyes can be many different shapes but in this example the eyes are a rectangle shape but with added curves to give more expression. The eyes should be around the half way point of the face and around the same level as the ears.
Step 2 Draw a thick curved line across the top of the eyes for the eyelashes, starting on the inside of the face and going all the way to the outside of the face, try to make this line pointy and then add a few more curved lines for more eyelashes. Draw more curved lines coming from the bottom of the eyes.
Step 3 This example does not have irises so this keep things simple. Draw two large dots for the pupils and then two smaller white dots for the light shining on the eyes. The white dots should be on the same side on both eyes.
Step 4 Draw two large curved lines above the eyes for the eyelids, this makes the eyes look better and also makes it easier for you to add eyeshadow when you are coloring in your drawing. This example does not have eyeshadow.
Step 5 When drawing the main shape of the nose you need to draw three parts stuck together, the bridge of the nose, the tip of the nose and a nostril. Draw a large curved line going down in between the eyes, make sure that it is closer to the left eye. Having this line curve inwards makes the nose look more feminine. Then draw a small straighter line for the tip of the nose and a small curved line for the nostril.
