How To Draw A Male Mouth In Colored Pencil – Part 2

To add the hair we will use the drawing approach define in this tutorial:

To summarize it the hair will be split into the forward, sides and back sections shown in red green and blue.

The reason for this is to make the drawing process easier to manage and understand instead of simply seeing things as one big clump of hair.

Begin by drawing the front section of the hair as shown above.

In this case the character will have fairly natural looking somewhat messy hair of medium length.

For hair like this draw it in fairly large clumps pointing in slightly different directions.

Drawing A Tired Loner Anime Male Character

The tired face is another expression that can be quite common to loner characters. For example they may spend the night playing online games and be tired in the morning.

For a tired look for the loner draw the eyebrows in upside down curves with their inner ends raised. Draw the top eyelids in reverse of their normal curves lower down on the eyes.

Keep the mouth the same as the normal expression.

To Draw Lips From The Side

Step 1 The first stroke determines the position of the lip. Draw a straight line which shows normal bite i.e. the line passes through the edges of the upper and lower lip.

Step 2 The second stroke is drawn almost perpendicular to the first line whose angle tells us about the thickness of the upper and lower lip.

Step 3 Now draw a line using the lines. Height of the triangle is directly proportional to the width of the lip.

Step 4 We then give a small dot at the end of the triangle to show the corner of the mouth.

Step 5 Draw curve starting from the top left corner of the triangle within the half triangle to form the top lip.

Step 6 Continue the line in curved manner along the middle line top divide the upper and lower lip.

Step 7 Similarly now start from bottom left corner to form the lower lip.

Step 8 Now we draw the upper and lower lip by extending the lines in curvy shape but not too far.

Step 9 Draw the rims of the lip by following the sides of the triangle till you reach the corner of the mouth. Erase the outlines.

Step 10 Draw faint vertical lines within both the lips and shade them to complete your lips. Remember to soften the edges.

Anatomy Of The Lips And Mouth

To understand the construction of the lips and mouth, you need to understand their function first. Each row of teeth is covered with soft, muscular tissue. In the front, that tissue is curled out to better grasp food. This works for both lips. If you imagine it this way, you’ll have no problems with seeing the 3D form of the mouth!

Of course, this is just the basic shape of the mouth. Fortunately, the other details can be easily derived from it. Keep in mind that the roundness of the teeth is covered with the cheek and jaw muscles, so the mouth looks only slightly rounded in the front.

To get a better idea of all these forms, take a look in the mirror and try to identify them on your face. Don’t be afraid to be your own reference!

Here’s a quick cheat-sheet of the lips and mouth forms in all the basic views:

Interestingly, lips are usually pigmented differently than the rest of the mouth. They’re more pinkish, often much darker than white skin. The border of pigmentation follows the form of the upper lip, but the lower lip sometimes curls in such a way that the unpigmented part is included in its form.

For drawing, we can simplify all these forms into a few easily identifiable parts:

How Male Lips Differ From Female Lips

When drawing male lips, theres a fine line that youll have to walk where you depict the shape of the lips, but you dont allow them to dominate a portrait. When drawing a man, the lips should be depicted, but they shouldnt be as prominent as when you are drawing a woman. Male lips, like most other male features, tend to have a slightly more square appearance than their female counterparts. This isnt to say that this is true with all men, but its true with most of them. When youre trying to draw a realistic portrait, its essential that you accurately depict your subjects features and proportions. But, when youre drawing the lips on a man, its okay to use a little artistic license to make them appear more masculine when necessary.

How To Add Shading To The Upper Lip

How to Draw Male Lips and Paint Skin Tones

When learning how to draw the male and female mouth and lips, its important to remember the upper lip is only lightly defined when drawing the male mouth. Understate the appearance of the male upper lip keeps the face looking masculine.

Accentuating the female mouth is common because it makes the face look more feminine, implying the lip may be painted.

Above you can see how the shading on the left is very light. This is yet another trick to take the focus off of the male lips, in addition the only recognition of the upper lip is the addition of the small dimple in the top line of the mouth.

When drawing the female mouth, the outline of the upper lip is much more pronounced. This means you can add in more shading which will once again draw more attention to them.
