Mini-tutorial: How to Draw Noses! (Manga/Anime)

Do anime characters even have lips?

Of course they do!

Lips are often simplified down to a line, but some styles or characters are blessed with a little more shape.

This 40-minute video takes you through a detailed lesson on the anatomy of anime lips and how to draw them. From pouts to smiles, this artist covers it all.

Examples Of Different Anime Styles

As you probably already know, anime-styled drawings can differ quite a bit depending on the artist. Once youve learnt the basic proportions and guidelines, you can change things up depending on your own preferences! Below are some anime-styled heads in different proportions. As you can tell, they have very different proportions ranging from more realistic to less realistic.

How To Draw Manga Head Multiple Angles

While the video itself might not be super high-quality , I think the video itself is pretty good. The basics are nicely presented, and in the video, you can see how the head shape is created in a few strokes.

In the video, the artist doesnt explain too much about the basics but does show the basics.

Draw Anime Characters Nose Manga Based On Shadow And Light

Another way to paint the nose for anime and manga characters is to use light and shadow to create a nose shape.

From the side , you draw the nose roughly like the example above, but the tip of the nose is slightly more pointed.

With a 3/4 view angle , you can draw the overhanging nose that doesnt see the bottom of the nose, except when the light comes from below, you draw over the top of the nose.

Most of the time, under normal lighting conditions, the nose will have a shadow on the bottom and opposite side of the light source. So, if you draw the nose from the perspective and the light source comes from the upper left corner, you will draw the ball at the bottom and right of the nose. If the light comes from below, then you paint the ball over the top of the nose.

This style will be appropriate if you want your work to keep the pros but still somewhat anime and manga style. This way of drawing is also used when displaying a close-up of a characters face.

How To Draw THE NOSE (CARTOON NOSES Vs ANIME)

In the video, Sophie Chan explains the subtle differences between male and female faces, so this tutorial is especially nice if you want to learn those differences.

The video presents a bit different approach to drawing the head, as Sophie starts from the chin, after the drawing the usual circle. Many starts by drawing the horizontal and vertical lines, but not Sophie, in this video, which makes the process a bit more interesting.

So in a sense, this video shows you how to draw the head before drawing elements like eyes, nose, mouth, etc. In the end, you have a clear head and face structure to draw on further.

Drawing Anime And Manga Noses

If you would like more information on how to position the nose on the head you can check the How to Draw an Anime Girls Head and Face tutorial.

Some defining feature of anime and manga noses are that they tend to be small and pointy with details like the nostrils often not drawn at all. Of course there are also quite a few variation to the style some of which are shown above.

For this tutorial we will split the noses into tree main types:

  • Basic nose drawn with just lines
  • Nose defined with a shadow
  • Semi-realistic nose

Appling Noses To An Illustration

To finish up the tutorial, lets take a look at this step-by-step illustration so you can see how the nose is put together with the other elements that make up the face. I have drawn a small freckled nose to create some texture to the skin in the nose area. Note how important it is to know where highlights and shades must be placed in order to achieve depth and volume. I always add some shine to the sides of the nostrils and at the tip, while using a darker shadow under the nose. The color of your illustration depends greatly on lighting, in addition to the character themselves. In my image, I used a neutral light source.

Basic Nose Side View Drawing

For the side view again be sure to keep the vertical placement of the nose as described earlier and as shown in the above illustration. A common mistake beginners make is misplacing facial features when drawing the same character from different views.

Its hard to have a clear placement guide for the horizontal positioning of the nose in the side view as this can be effected by the face type, nose length and style. Generally however you will want to draw it sticking out past the forehead.

Make the actual shape of the nose somewhat like a vertical check mark with a short bottom curve, a pointy tip and a long upper curve.

How To Draw An Anime Nose

How to Draw Manga Noses

Anime is one of the most popular and beautiful forms of visual art. And in this tutorial we will show you how to draw an anime nose.

The fact is that in the anime there are a huge variety of how to draw noses. How the nose looks depends on many factors on the age, gender, and even the alignment of the character. Below we will try to most widely show all the ways to draw anime noses.

Most often, the nose in anime is drawn as a simple line. Or two lines that indicate the appearance of the nostrils or the tip of the nose.

Anime nose can draw a little more complicated. To do this, you can add a slightly curved nose bridge to the simple lines from the figure drawing above. The line of the nasal bridge can be of various forms, you can see this in the drawing from the artists of Drawingforall.net below.

Pay attention to how the nose will look from the side. In its simplest form, it appears as two lines the bridge of the nose, and the lower line of the nose. To it you can add a short line of the nostril. Also note how different noses can look like in anime.

To make the anime nose drawing more complex, you need to add some shadows. In the anime shadows are drawn very easily. First, it is necessary to depict the outlines of the shadow itself, then, using a dense but light hatching, paint over this area of the shadow.

As you could see, it was quite easy to learn how to draw an anime nose. We repeat once again all the important points.

Add Shading To Finish The Drawing

To finish the drawing you can add some more basic shading to several areas of the face. As in many other tutorials here on AnimeOutline the shading will be done in a fairly generic way. Meaning that the shadows will be added in places where they are likely to occur in common lighting conditions such as a well lit room or daytime outside.

For this type of shading add shadows in the following places:

  • Bottom tips of the hair clumps
  • On the head
  • Around the eyelids

This is why perspective is so important in drawing complex forms from different views precisely because the mouth looks very different in profile than it does in the three-quarters view or. Space out the marks evenly at the beginning.

Understanding The Nose: Basic Structure

How to Draw Anime Nose – Easy Things to Draw

Before you start drawing noses in different styles and shapes, its best to secure your understanding of its basic structure. Once you grasp the basic foundation of something, it greatly helps when recreating it in another drawing style, from realistic to cartoonish. If you follow this order, it will be much easier to draw the nose you need in any situation.

Try to imagine the different basic shapes that make up a nose and break it down. Using flat and rectangular shapes will help you understand its volume. Below, we have various break downs of the nose, separated by color. For the main structure of the nose, imagine a rectangle that can be narrowed at will as it gets closer to the tip of the nose. Or try to enlarge it a bit more when you are looking for a nose with wider nostrils.

Add The Eyes Nose And Mouth

Draw two half ovals on either side of the face with small, curved lines inside for the ears. Moving inside the face circle, in line with the ears, youll start working on the biggest featurethe eyes! Anime eyes drawing can seem complicated but remember to break it down into shapes to make it easier.

Start with two curved lines on each side with the gap between them being the width youd like the eyes to be. From here, draw in the curved lines of the eyeballs and a lighter curved line over the top for the eyebrows.

Add the eyes first, as these are the most important facial feature on anime characters.

Shade in a small circle at the top of the eyeballs to create the pupils, adding in a few short lines on the curved lines underneath for eyelashes.

Along the center guideline, add a small V shape or two short lines for the nose. Most anime mouth drawing is a simple line in the bottom third of the face, so add this in to complete the features.

As you make progress on your drawing, dont forget to keep using your guidelines to help you.

You can sketch the anime nose on its own, but this guide will focus on drawing the nose on a characters head. It will make for good practice in case you eventually decide to come up with your own anime characters.

  • First, were going to draw the head. Sketch an inverted egg shape, to outline the head and the jaw.
  • Draw the guidelines. Start by sketching a vertical line in the middle of the head. This line helps ensure that the face is symmetrical.

    Japanese Pro Vs Amateur

How to draw 8 different noses – Anime Manga Style

This is an interesting video as it shows how a pro draws anime and manga face and head, compared to an amateur.

While the video is in Japanese, dont let that bother you . Follow the lines, the hand movement, and see how the face and head structured. I also like the fact that the pro draws hair.

The video is especially nice because it shows you how the drawing from an amateur compares with the drawing from a pro.

Theres a clear mismatch in structure and in proportions. So it is useful to learn from a pro.

Draw The First Draft Of Facial Features

Lets also cut in from both sides of the circle, and create the area for where ears will go .

Okay, this next stage is super important, so keep your focus and energy to get through it. We will now begin to use the markers from Step 2, to carefully place features onto the face, in a very draft-like way.

If you are using a pencil, press lightly and focus more on the overall shape and placement of the feature rather than the details. Eyes can be styled to look like ovals, for now, the nose can be adjusted to just a simple extension of the face. The lips can be simplified as well. We are not looking to draw the final beautiful image we are simply looking to help our minds in the next stage. That is to say, we are placing down a brief sketch for the eyes, the nose, the lips, and ears, to use as an underdrawing in the next stage of the drawing.

It is completely okay, if, at the end of this stage, your drawing looks like a sketchy mess , as long as you can easily identify where you can draw over it.

Keep adjusting your lines and your sketch, to fit the style and expression you are going for. Stop when you are happy with your progress. You should feel like what you have is a good summation of what is to come in the next step. More importantly, you should feel like you have a good base to draw over confidently.

    Drawing Perfect Manga Eyes

After youve gotten familiar with balancing your proportions, feel free to bend these rules and get more creative. But for starters:

    • Manga eyes generally have a sharp top and bottom with softer sides or corners.
    • The eyebrow follows the shape of the upper eyelid to some degree.
    • The distance of the eyebrow from the upper eyelid is proportional to the eyes height.
    • The upper eyelid casts a shadow on the eye.
    • Girls eyes usually have more highlights in them and their eyelashes are longer than boys.

The eyes are arguably the most crucial and defining feature on your characters face. Therefore, experiment and see how you can express different emotions through the characters eyes.

    Add The Facial Features

Draw two circles on the center guideline but leave a small opening at the bottom of each these will be your eyes. When youre drawing anime, the eyes are one of the most important features and are usually much bigger than the other facial features. Sketch in an arch over the top of each circle and a curved line around the far side of each to frame the eyes.

From here you can also add in a small V shape on the center guideline for the nose, a slightly curved line for a smiling mouth, and a couple of short and light pencil strokes underneath the eyes for a blushing effect.

Adding the facial features starts to bring your character to life.

    Draw Manga: Where To Start

Welcome to drawing manga and welcome to drawing in general!

This is the beginning of a YouTube series where the artist takes you through the basics of drawing anime.

Starting at the very beginning, this is a quick where to start walkthrough that will cover the basics of learning to draw this unique Japanese art style. It sets a good foundation for the rest of your learning so be sure to give it a quick watch.

Drawing Anime & Manga Faces Viewed From Below Hard Angles

This tutorial is a bit advanced, but if you are ready for it, go for it. This tutorial explains how to draw faces from angles that you dont typically see in manga and anime.

One of those is the one where the viewpoint is below the chin, making the chin look big and other features like eyes, small.

The reason why you dont see these too much in the manga is that in manga art, the chin is usually very pointy, aesthetic, or downright beautiful and when you view that from below, you will have to draw the chin based on realism.

Its pretty hard to draw a chin that is pointy when viewed below. It just doesnt work, so in these instances, you cant draw so much in manga and anime style but have to incorporate realism to it.

Which also means that you have to get into the mature style of manga and anime heads.
