How To Draw A Nose Step By Step
Here’s the process that we outlined above, simplified and broken down into a step by step approach…
Begin your drawing of a nose by drawing four lines. Two lines are drawn for each nostril and then two more for each edge of the nose.
Now you can begin to add darker values where the nose is shaded. Start with the areas that are the darkest and slowly get darker with your pencil.
Continue with adding shading to the nose to create the illusion of a light source. Be careful not add more lines. Instead, just concentrate on light and dark areas.
The more value that you add, the more your nose will look realistic. Areas of the nose that are light will look like they protrude, while areas that are dark will look like they go back in space.
As long as you keep looking for the dark and light areas on the nose, and draw what you see, your nose will look realistic.
Once you have a basic idea of how to draw a nose from a frontal view, it’s time to look at drawing a nose from the side.
Draw The Top Of The Head
Before drawing any parts of the head or face it can be helpful to draw a straight vertical line through the middle of your page/drawing area. This line can act as a guide to help you see if both sides of the head/face are even in width. It can also help you center the drawing on page.
Towards the upper end of the line draw a circle that will represent the top of the head. Be careful not to draw it too high up though as you will need to leave some room for the hair.
Draw The Bottom Of The Face
Going down from the circle that represents the top of the head draw the bottom of the face similar to what is shown in the example. As this is a stylized cartoon character this part of the face will be drawn smaller than in real people with a pointier chin.
Erase the bottom part of the circle after you are done so that the head looks like the example in the next step.

Visible Parts Of The Nose
Lets first examine the visible parts of the nose and then talk about whats underneath.
When drawing the body you need to know whats underneath, to understand what youre drawing at the surface.
Its no different with the nose.
Visible parts of the nose consist of the root, the bridge, the tip, the wings , the nostrils , and the septum. I know that Anatomy might sound intimidating at times but it is not so bad with the visible parts of the nose. It is just eight things we have to draw, two of which appear twice:
Lets talk about the septum, since its really important when trying to draw a nose that looks like a nose.

The Key Is Observation
You must closely observe your subject when you draw anything. Drawing noses realistically involves studying the values. The values are what gives us the impression and illusion of the form. Make sure that you include a full range of value when you draw a nose.
Drawing lines will help to establish the shape of the nose, but it’s the values that will lead to the illusion of form that you probably want in you drawing.
Your drawing must include the darkest shades and the lightest tints and the grays in between. Keep in mind that no two noses will be the same. Observation is really the biggest secret when it comes to drawing.
Try to pinpoint the locations on the nose where these values are located and notice the subtle changes that happen in the highlights , midtones , and the shadows .
Understanding The Nose: Round Shapes
Once you understand the basic
structure of the nose, translate those rectangular and flattened elements into curved and spherical shapes. This will gradually begin to resemble the structure of a real nose.
Notice how a nose can be realistically represented. Taking into account the shaded areas helps to understand the volumes. Once you have analyzed these shapes, try to blend them together. Use references, photographs, etc. for this. You can find tons of reference images on sites like ArtStation or .
To easily represent the tip of the nose, draw a bigger sphere in the center, with two small ones on the sides. Sizes can vary depending on how you want the nose to look and feel free to add a rectangular structure to better understand each side of the nose.

Finally Lets Draw The Nose
It is time to start drawing the nose.
If you completed the previous steps in this guide, you now have a good understanding of the anatomy of the nose and its basic form. You are also able to simplify the form of the nose in your mind when looking at reference, and you can imagine and visualize the form as it appears on paper before you begin to draw. You also have some good picture references of the nose in front of you.
In this section, lets look at how I painted this nose step by step. We will use a digital drawing I made in Procreate, but same concepts apply regardless of the medium you are using.
If you are following along in Procreate, I used the Sketching HB Pencil, the Painting Flat Brush and a Blender , all at default settings.
Note that before following along, its very important to read the anatomy section of this post. You should also be able to visualize a very simplified box-like version of the nose to understand where the planes of the nose turn.
When the basic drawing of the nose is finished, you can add detail to the form if you like. In adding detail you can work on getting the form back to its original complex state that we found in real life. Remember how we simplified the form before drawing it on paper, the detail that is added later can help make the nose look more realistic.
Then Refine The Shape Of The Nose
Polish up the form of the nose by erasing some parts of the circle outline that overlaps inside the nose.
You dont necessarily have to get rid of the entire circle shape, just a few lines that mess up the structure of the nose.
Keep in mind to leave out the bottom part of the circle as this serves as the tip of the nose, as shown in the illustration.

I have been teaching art for 15 years so these are my top recommendations for equipment, tools, and materials that will help you achieve the best results in your drawing. If you would like an overall Drawing Kit that will have all your bases covered, have a look at these top Drawing Kits.
A Drawing Pad or sketchbook: Its a good idea to have a drawing pad or sketchbook that you can open up and work in. Its also handy to have one where you can easily remove the pages if you want to sell your drawings, mount or frame them.
Kneadable Eraser: This is an absolute must for drawing. You can alter the shape of the eraser so that you can easily erase tiny areas within your artwork. You can also use this eraser to lift areas of shading that have been overworked.
Sharpener: A sturdy reliable blade that will keep your pencils ready for sketching.
Understanding The Nose: Basic Structure
Before you start drawing noses in different styles and shapes, its best to secure your understanding of its basic structure. Once you grasp the basic foundation of something, it greatly helps when recreating it in another drawing style, from realistic to cartoonish. If you follow this order, it will be much easier to draw the nose you need in any situation.
Try to imagine the different basic shapes that make up a nose and break it down. Using flat and rectangular shapes will help you understand its volume. Below, we have various break downs of the nose, separated by color. For the main structure of the nose, imagine a rectangle that can be narrowed at will as it gets closer to the tip of the nose. Or try to enlarge it a bit more when you are looking for a nose with wider nostrils.

How To Draw A Nose In Anime And Manga Styles
Lets learn how to draw a nose from the easiest way. This is good to familiarize yourself with drawing a nose properly. Drawing an anime-styled nose is a nice start for you since the art style has been pretty much simplified.
Many define the features of anime and manga noses small and pointy with details like the nostrils often not drawn at all. Of course, this is not always the casethe details given to the drawing always depend on the variations and most importantly, your preferences.
Draw Circles For Nostrils
guidelines for nostrils of the nose shall also be in a circular shape. I would suggest drawing circles that fit the marked points on the horizontal line that we have drawn in step #3.
It is not always necessary to follow the guidelines as you draw many noses and be comfortable.
The positions of the three circles that we have drawn decide how the nose looks like.
If we draw the horizontal line in step #2 a little above the center of the circle, the nose will be a pointed nose.

Draw A Nose Easy For Beginners
Step 1 Nose can be of any shape and size. But in general, I will be teaching you draw a normal human nose which is taught first everywhere. Just draw two lines as shown in the figure.
Step 2 Now draw the outline for the wings of the nose. Its breadth is almost half of the perpendicular line. Keep in mind to maintain the proportions.
Step 3 After the markings, it becomes quite easy to shape the nose. Just draw a smooth shape around the wings. Mark the outer areas of the breathing holes.
Step 4 Remove all the outlines and add some definitions on your own. Do not make any mistakes otherwise it may turn too thick or thin.
Step 5 Now at last start giving some shadows to your drawing and with soft strokes. Darken the holes through which we inhale. And then you are complete with your simple human nose.
Visualize Drawing The Nose
Top performers in many fields often say that they visualized success as a means of achieving it. I see this repeated everywhere because it actually works. We will leverage this technique for drawing the nose. Now that you have a simplified form in your mind from looking at reference, look at your canvas and visualize the simplified forms placement, angles, shapes, lines as they will appear on paper.
This is probably the most difficult part of this guide. It takes a lot of focus and patience not to start drawing right away. But be patient, and I promise it will pay off in big dividends when you begin to draw.
As you look at good reference and at your blank piece of paper, try to redraw the simplified shapes you imagined in the last step. See the nose appear on paper before you start to draw. Map out the basic shapes, and walk your mind through the drawing step by step. . If you feel like you made a mistake, it is much easier to erase in your mind than on paper.

Attaching The Nose To The Face
The brow bone joins the nose to the face
So how do you attach the nose to the face? Well, at the top of the nose, the underlying structure changes from cartilage to bone.
You can try this out for yourself just feel your nose with your fingers and and lightly move your nose around.
Can you feel the difference between the soft, bendy cartilage along the bridge of the nose and the hard bone at the top?
This hard piece of bone is your brow bone. It runs from the skull at the top of your nose, and extends vertically before extending outwards to form the brow bone above your nose.
Drawing The Perceived Lines
When most of us learn to draw, we start by drawing lines. We use lines to define the boundaries of objects and to add details. So it’s only natural to look for lines when we draw any object.
A nose, however, doesn’t feature strongly defined lines. Our mind simplifies changes in value or contrast into “perceived lines”. For a nose, these areas include the shapes of the nostrils and the outer edges of the nostrils. This is simply because we notice strong contrast in value in these locations. In reality, the value changes gradually, instead of creating a defined line.
We can use the planes of the nose to position the perceived lines that we see. Using the outer boundaries of the planes, we can mark the outer edges of the nostrils. We can also use the bottom planes to position the shapes of the nostrils.

Drawing The Ball Of The Nose
Create the ball of the nose by drawing a circle
The next part of learning how to draw a nose is to add is the ball of the nose. You can draw this as a simple circle, but its important to remember this: Even though youre drawing a 2D circle shape, what youre actually representing is a 3D shape with depth and form.
Proportions According To Biological Sex And Genre
Once the basic structure of the nose has been fully understood, let us concentrate on how to use the right type of nose for each character. Research and identify different individual features that allow you to see age or sex differences between characters. A typical male nose is different from a female nose in that it usually has a more noticeable septum and larger nostrils. A typical feminine nose would have a thinner septum and smaller nostrils. You can also round or sharpen the tip of the nose to make it a little thinner.
Another aspect to consider is age. As their body is still growing, childrens noses are much smaller than those of adults. You can see the same pattern when comparing the nose of an adult to that of an older adult. Look at how an older mans nose is larger and drops down further compared to that of a middle-aged adult.
