How To Do The Paper Airplane Challenge

Paper Plane Target Challenge

In this first challenge the goal is accuracy. The cargo paper planes need to demonstrate they can fly through a target successfully.

  • Use tape to mark a line on the floor 10 feet from the doorway you will use for the target.
  • Stretch a piece of tape across the doorway about 1/4th the way from the door way top.
  • Kids will throw paper airplanes attempting to fly over the tape and not run into the wall!
  • The challenge winner is the one that is the most accurate with the heaviest plane.
  • Paper Plane Distance Challenge

The second challenge has a goal of flying distance. Accuracy is only important that the paper planes are still in boundaries that you determine.

  • Use tape to mark a starting line on the ground or floor.
  • Determine what in bounds is based on your surroundings.
  • Challengers all start with the same weight on the paper airplanes and take turns throwing for distance.
  • The challenge winner is the one who threw their paper plane for the longest distance.

How To Make A Basic Paper Airplane

    • Total Time: 20 mins
    • Skill Level: Kid-friendly

There are many methods to make a paper airplane, some much more intricate than others. This origami paper airplane is quick and easy to make, and it’s able to make long, straight flights. The project works best with 6-inch lightweight origami paper squares. Although many origami projects can be folded with scrapbook paper, magazine pages, and other materials, the airplane needs a lightweight paper to fly well. Thicker paper is also more difficult to fold, which makes it more likely that your plane will be asymmetrical and end up taking a quick nosedive upon launch. This project is a great activity to do with kids, making it a lesson about both origami and aviation. And you could even turn it into a friendly competition to see whose paper airplane can fly the farthest.

Tips For The Best Paper Airplanes

    • Use heavyweight construction paper for the best aerodynamics and durability.
    • To add to the fun , spend some time “decorating” the paper aircraft either before or after folding. Customizing a plane is a great way for your kids to express their creativity!
    • Make good creases with each wing fold so that your plane is sharp, clean, and flies smoothly.
    • For higher speeds and more distance, add a paper clip to the nose of the airplane. A heavy nose helps balance the plane, so that it doesn’t fly straight up or float when your child throws it.

Piloting paper airplanes is serious business around here. Which plane goes the fastest? The highest? The farthest? You get the idea…it’s always a competition.

You want to try and draw the little visible bit of the bottom of the airplane in such a way that if you were to extend the line it would go to the tip of the plane. You dont need to be as precise with this as the example but its something to aim for.

When done withe the light line drawing make sure you are happy with the way everything looks and trace over it with a black pen or marker. If you dont have one simply darken your lines with the pencil. You can again use a ruler to help you if needed .

    Intermediate Level: The Harrier

This is a slightly more advanced paper airplane. There are a few more folds, and it flies a bit better than the above Bulldog Dart. This is the perfect middle ground between simple and complex recreational paper aircraft.

    1. Fold in half lengthwise and then unfold. As with the Bulldog above, this center crease is just a guide for future folds.

    2. Fold the top corners in so they meet at the center crease.

    3. Fold the entire top down so that it resembles an envelope. Make sure you leave a half inch or so at the bottom you dont want the top point to evenly meet the bottom edge.

    4. Fold the top corners in so they meet at the middle. There should be a small triangle tail hanging out beneath these folds.

    5. Fold that small triangle up to hold those previous folds in place.

    6. Fold in half, but make you sure you fold it outwards on itself, not inwards. You want the previous triangular fold to be visible on the bottom edge.

    7. Fold the wing down so its edge meets the bottom edge of the airplane. Repeat on the other side.

The finished Harrier shown below. It has cool pointed wings and has great stability because of the triangle on the bottom.

  • Fold the triangle down and make sure the top is aligned with the crease of the fold you made lengthwise in the first step.
  • Now, grab the two flaps and fold them again. However, make sure only their edges touch in the middle, instead of creating a triangle like you did in step #2.
  • Now, flip the plane over and fold it in half lengthwise.
  • Time to make the wings. Lay the plane flat on the surface and fold each side down, creasing about an inch above the bottom of the plane. Also add little creases on the top for extra speed and stability.

  • 3Fold the angled top edges toward the crease again. Grab the new top corner on one side of your paper and fold toward the crease to form a long triangle. Run your fingernail across the fold to secure it in place. Fold the other top corner in the same way so your piece of paper looks like a large triangle.XResearch source

Tip: Try using a ruler or a credit card to press the fold down if pressing it with your fingernail doesnt work.
