Procreate Tutorial: How To Draw A Bottle With Ipad Pro
Lets first get set upwith a new canvas in Procreate. When you first open the app youll be in thegallery where all of your artworks will be visible. Tap the + in the topright of the screen and a menu will appear where you can select your canvassize. To choose your dimensions click create custom canvas and enter them . You can simply select screen size, however Irecommend going bigger so that you have the option to print your finished piecewith a nice resolution. For my bottle drawing Ive created a 22 x 29 canvas.
Now its important toexplore and familiarize yourself with Procreates;basic tools.Starting with the toolbar on the top right of your canvas.
Then there are the slider toolbars on the left side of your canvas.
- Brush Size:;The top slider. Tap, hold and move up and down to adjust the size of your brush tip. A preview window will open up to help guide you. This slider is used for your brush, smudge and eraser tools in the same way.
- Brush Opacity:;The bottom slider. This works the same way as the brush size slider, but is for brush opacity.
- Undo/Redo:;Under the sliders youll see these two buttons. Tapping the undo button will undo the last stroke you drew/erased. Vice versa with the redo button. This is a very useful tool youll probably use a lot. You can also undo by tapping once anywhere on your canvas with two fingers.
Using The Liquify Tool
Another way you can distort your shape is to use the liquify tool.
Go up to your magic wand and then select liquify.;
Youll see quite a few settings there. I recommend playing around with them. This is not going to be as precise as using the selection tool, but it might be a little more fun
To make your teardrop fatter, you might use the expand tool. You can then adjust the weight of your line with the edge tool.;
Reset your teardrop to go back to the beginning. Try using the push tool to push your lines around to get them where you want them. You can adjust the size and pressure to make the effect stronger or weaker.;
You can also use the twirl function to twirl your teardrop a bit.;
The liquify tool is always a fun option for changing your design. If you use a brush that has pressure sensitivity to draw your lines, you can use the expand tool to try to expand your line to be more consistent. Thats what I did when I created my teardrop brush with a watercolor brush.

How To Draw A Bottle Step 5: Shading And Colouring
Now youve got alovely outline drawing of your bottle and glass. Time to colour it in!
Again, this is where layers come in very handy. Go to your layers menu and first, delete your rough copy layer. Next create another new layer by tapping the +. I am starting with the bottle. Youll notice my outline for this object was creating a solid black shape, since the bottle itself is black. If you look at the image, try to see it as a black base, with different shapes on top creating the shine. I will draw the shine on the new layer weve just created. In doing so, I can manipulate the tone and colours of the shine easily using the alpha lock tool.
Go ahead and draw allof the shine just using a solid colour . Noticehow there is a gradient of colour across just the shine on the bottle?Procreate makes it very easy to create that effect using the alpha lock. When a layer is on alpha lock, any changes you make to thatlayer will only show up over where youve already drawn. Meaning if you haveyour base layer drawn if you alpha lock it youcan freely draw colours on top without ever going outside your lines. To alphalock a layer, open it in the layers menu, and swipe the layer right with twofingers. Youll see a checked pattern appear on the layer thumbnail. Toun-alpha lock the layer just swipe right with two fingers again.
Using this tool, blend your colours out until you have thesmooth gradient you want that mimics the look of the reflections on the glass.
How To Draw A Straight Line At An Angle With Procreate
If youre drawing in perspective, it can be important to draw lines at specific angles. There are two methods of doing this with Procreate.
1. Draw a perfectly parallel and straight line with the Drawing Guide as described in the technique above.2. Turn off the Drawing Guide and click on the Transform tool (the icon that looks like a computer cursor in the top menu bar.3. Make sure that you are using the Uniform setting and the Magnetics is on4. As you rotate your line, a notice will pop up below the main toolbar telling you how much your line is being rotated5. Rotate the line to the degree you want, position it properly, and youre done.
Since you started off with a perfectly parallel line, you know that your line is either at 180 or 90 degrees. As you rotate, youll end up with a more accurate angle for your line. If you start with a diagonal line, for example, Procreate will tell you the angle of the shape overall, which likely wont be the same as the line itself.
Theres another method for drawing angles though, which is especially great if your design relies heavily on perspective and you dont want to worry too much about rotating your lines.

Save It And Copy And Paste It Later
You could always save it in your canvas and then if you ever need it in the future, you could go back into your project and then do a copy paste of the layer and move it over into a new project.;
This has the same issues as exporting it as a PNG. Youll want to be organized so you can find the project later and youll also need to pay attention to the size of your teardrop when you create it.;

Undo / Redo / Clear / Eraser
You can pinch and spread to zoom in or out and rotate your canvas. Do a quick pinch to have the canvas go back to filling the screen. If you make a mark you want to undo simply tap with two fingers anywhere on the canvas. Tap with two fingers and hold to undo multiple. Tap with three fingers to redo. Tap and hold with three fingers to redo multiple. Use three fingers to scrub off the screen and clear all.
Lets take a look at the eraser tool. Im going to color in a portion of the screen then select the eraser, which is right here. The cool thing about it is you can use any of your brushes as an eraser. Let me undo that. If I look at my brush, I can see that Im using this one. Now if I tap and hold the eraser, it will automatically select that brush to use as an eraser. Now I can erase and have my eraser marks match the brushes and it will look seamless.

Why Is Procreate Only Drawing Straight Lines
If Procreate will only draw straight lines, its likely that Drawing Assist has accidentally been triggered or left on. Navigate to the Actions tab and click on Preferences. Next, click on Gesture Controls and then Assisted Drawing. Make sure that all Assisted Drawing settings are turned off.
Also, navigate to the Drawing Guides screen and make sure that Drawing Assist is off. Click on the Actions tab and the Edit Drawing Guide button. In the screen that pops up, make sure that Drawing Assist is not enabled.
Procreates Assisted Drawing tool is designed to help artists with technical designs. When you draw a line, it will snap to the drawing guide you have selected .
This is really great when you need it, but not so great when you dont.
Part of the problem is that its easy to activate Assisted Drawing. If you look at the Assisted Drawing settings, there are a number of ways to turn it on without ever having to go into the actual settings for this feature. Tap your Apple Pencil in the wrong way and you could end up with straight lines for days.
Its also easy to forget that Assisted Drawing is enabled within the Drawing Guide settings. You might turn on the Drawing Guide without actually going into the settings, which makes it easy to forget that Assisted Drawing is enabled.;
As long as you dont get caught up in an Assisted Drawing snag, Procreate will become your best friend as you draw straight lines.
Go forth and create great art!
