How to Draw a Person’s Shoulder (side view)

Drawing a side view of something seems to be the most intuitivewithout “perspective” it’s simple and fun. However, because of this simplicity, side-view drawings are also boring, and they make it very hard to present all the features of a character. In this short tutorial I’ll show you how to turn them into an interesting, 3D view with a simple Photoshop trick.

Brow Forehead And Top Of The Head

Now that were done with the guidelines, lets start drawing the top portion of the head. Where the CENTER LINE meets the face, draw a shallow curve.;Im trying to avoid a deep curve because I dont want to bring too much attention to the brow area. Just trying to keep it looking soft and subtle.

Once thats done, draw a slight bump for the brow and then use the oval as a rough guide to draw the forehead and rest of the upper head.

Drawing A Single Person

  • 1Start with the upper body first. For the head, sketch a circle, and then add a sharp curve at the bottom of it to form an upside-down egg shape.
  • 2Draw the neck next. You can usually just draw two short, straight lines roughly ears-width apart.
  • 3Draw a horizontal line perpendicular to the base of the neck but very lightly. This is a guideline for the figure’s collar bone. It should be about two to three head widths in length.
  • 4Sketch circles that are slightly smaller than the circle you drew for the head. The circle should be at either end of the collar guideline. These will be the shoulders.
  • 5Draw two ovals slightly longer than the vertical length of the head. Ensure that they are attached to the underside of the shoulder circles. These will be the upper arms/biceps.
  • 6Draw the torso at the points where the bicep ovals meet the shoulder circles. This can be achieved by drawing a kind of upside-down trapezoid shape for the chest, and two vertical lines for the abdominal trunk. Beneath that, draw an upside-down triangle for the pelvic area.
  • 7Draw a very small circle about half a head-length above the upside-down triangle. This is the belly button. To ensure your figure is proportionate, adjust the bicep ovals so that their bottoms are even with the height of the belly button. Draw a guideline if you need to.
  • 8Sketch two circles that are slightly larger than your shoulder circles. They should each be halfway inside the pelvic triangle. These are your hip joints.

So How To Draw The Human Body

If you want to draw the human body, you should follow this simple 6 step by step process:

    • Step 1: First you gotta draw the torso, with the rib cage and the abdomen. Do not focus on muscles and focus on general shape and form.
    • Step 2: Draw the hips. Again make it simple. You can draw this area of the body like an if it was a short underwear.
    • Step 3: Draw the shoulders and the arms. Simple shapes like an ellipse for the shoulder, tubes for the arms, and squares for the hands will do the trick.
    • Step 4: Draw the legs. Use tubes for the thighs and the shins, and triangles for the feet.
    • Step 5: Draw the head. You can do it by drawing an ellipse and dividing the different planes of the head.
    • Step 6: Draw the facial features. The eyes, the nose, the lips, ears, and hair. All on top of your dummys head.
    • Step 7: Draw the rest of the body on top of your dummy.

This tutorial can be followed no matter what medium you use, traditional or digital. In any case, if after finishing this tutorial you wanna know;more about how to improve your drawing skills and become proficient in character drawing, you should check my course onHow to Draw Characters Like a Pro, when I teach the techniques and methods professional artist use when drawing characters.

Now let´s go more in-depth and explain each step of the tutorial. But, before we start, you need to understand the importance of proportions.

    Anime Face Proportions Side View

How to Draw a Person Kicking (foot view, side angle)

In the above example you can see the basic proportions for drawing an anime face.

Draw the eye below the vertical halfway point of the head, draw the nose roughly between that and the chin, draw the bottom lip roughly between the chin and the nose with the mouth slightly above it. Draw the ears starting from the top of the yes to roughly the bottom of the nose.

Please note that these are only guidelines for a more common anime look. The proportions of anime faces can change based on character type and style variations.

    Eyes From Different Angles

From other angles eyes might appear flat if drawn in a straight line. The front area of the face is a little bent and the eyes appear slanted.

The form of the eye changes when the pupil moves. Dont be afraid to break up the eye shape to make it dynamic. The pupil moves on a sphere, not on a straight plane.

Especially when drawing eyes from a ¾ view it is important to imagine the spherical space they move on. Keep the thickness of the eyelids in mind. Stylised approaches might leave out some anatomical details, but the shape should still act like the realistic eye in order to achieve a 3-dimensional result.

When the head is turned away in semi profile you might only see the tip of the eyebrow and eyelash. Turning it more reveals there is no space between eye and eye bridge. This indicates a strong change of direction to where the head is facing before it turns into a full profile.

    Drawing From The Torso

I always start drawing the torso. The reason is that the torso dictates the whole position of the body. Once you have the torso and the hips placed, to draw the head and the limbs become way easier.

In my case, when Im drawing the torso Im doing it like one big part. Other people prefer to draw the ribcage first and the abdomen after. You can choose whatever method you prefer. Once I have the torso drawn, I proceed to divide the rib cage from the abdomen with a curve line. This curve line will cross the center of the torso. In his higher part will mark the end of the breastbone and the lower chest. On the sides will tell us were the floating ribs will be placed.

On top of the torso, I also draw another curve. This one will define were the clavicle will be situated. Above the clavicle, I will draw an ellipse. This ellipse will define where the neck will be placed.

As you already notice, one head is the distance between the base of the neck and the lower chest line.

    Divide the torso

Finally, I like to divide the torso with a vertical line. This line goes from the neck to the hips. It is very important because it will help us to understand where the division between both pectoral muscles will be and where the belly button will be placed.

Because we are drawing our character from a 3/4 view, both divisions of the torso will have different sizes. The nearest side to the viewer will be bigger and the farthest will be smaller.

How To Draw A Cartoon Face From The Side: Start Defining The Features

Theres nothing too special to note here that you dont already know how to draw other than how the drawing continues to evolve as new lines are added.

When learning how to draw a cartoon face from the side, its best not to think of any one line or curve in your drawing as being sacred, meaning that it cant be changed.

Instead its best to think of it as an ever evolving collaboration of different parts.

They all need to work together harmoniously to get a pleasing final result.

    Drawing People In A Scene/background

    Drawing Tutorial:Person in Side View
  • 1Sketch a scene. Don’t be too focused on how it looks, but make sure it matches what your people are wearing and style.
  • 2Sketch the wireframes and positions for your characters . Remember that this is not the flesh, but just a kind of skeleton. Don’t forget to add ovals to bends.
  • 3Sketch the body shapes needed to help you build the figures’ bodies.
  • 4Sketch the details for the faces, clothes, shoes, features, etc. Don’t forget to match the weather in your scene! Keep it simple, but not too simple. Changes are made for women and men. Women have thinner hips, but bigger torsos and waists. Men have more angular faces and features, while women’s are more round. Women also tend to have thinner necks.
  • 5Refine the sketch using a smaller tipped drawing tool. Smooth out each straight line to be more curved and humane. You don’t need a square-bodied person walking around! Make sure to add creases or lines coming out from the joints for more depth.
  • 6Draw the outline over the sketch. You can use a marker, pen or just push harder with the pencil.
  • 7Erase and remove the sketch marks.
  • 8Add color to the drawing. Sign your name if you wish. Keep true to your shading and scene. Make sure to sign your name on the bottom right and not anywhere else!Advertisement

For a tutorial on drawing teeth see:

In the above example you can see roughly how much lower down you should draw the jaw in comparison to the closed state of the mouth.

Also keep in mind that the jaw does not simply drop down like an elevator but also somewhat pivots downwards. This means that the angle you draw it on should also change slightly to take this into account.

    Getting A Strong Look

If you compare this image to the one above it you can see how the design is evolving into a much stronger look than was initially created.

This is achieved by strengthening the jaw, defining the brow to be a little sharper and also adding in a small little ear.

As you continue to learn how to draw a cartoon face from the side and experiment on your own, you will find all kinds of ways to get different feelings for your characters.

Also when you are looking at other peoples character designs really break down the facial features into individual components and analyze them and consider how their shape deliberately changes the feeling of the character.

For example if you took the iconic character of Mickey Mouse and gave him smaller or pointier ears, what would that do to the feeling of the character?
