From the bottom left curve of the circle, draw a light line down for the back of the neck and another line underneath your chin curve on the right. About halfway down the circle on the right, draw a line outwards that then curves back in towards the circle. This will form the nose.

Adding in the nose and mouth first helps you to figure out where the eyes should be positioned, as shown by Skillshare teacher Gad Ounelfe.

Just underneath the tip of the nose, draw a short line inwards with a short line above and below to form a sideways M shape for the lips. Moving back up to the top of your T-shaped guidelines, draw a sideways V with dark shading at the widest end for the eye. The front of the eye should be roughly in line with the back of the nose and lips to ensure that everything is proportioned correctly.

Make sure that your eyes, nose, and mouth are all aligned to keep your profile in proportion.

Falling Direction Of The Hair

This step is not about drawing slow cautious lines, but about drawing the hair in a sweeping and brisk manner. Of course, we don’t draw every single hair, but rather study the fall directions of the hair at the different places. Later we can define them with a few clear strokes. Hair grows in tufts, and within these tufts it all grows and falls in similar directions . I’ve created several tufts of hair and hairstyle areas in the image quite arbitrarily. There are no limits to your imagination. Hair is always the fun part.

Final Artwork Of The Hair

Once your hand gets used to the fast movements, lines, and curves of the hair strokes, it is much easier to define a clear, sweeping hairstyle. For the final drawing of the hair, it is recommended to use a separate layer again. Here we can orientate ourselves on the pre drawn hairstyle and later, as already mentioned, simply hide it. If necessary, we can also erase hair that is too long and protrudes into the face without erasing the face itself. It’s worth experimenting with different line widths and degrees of coverage when drawing the hairstyle. In our picture I have emphasized the individual strands with a darker line, while within the strands the indicated subdivision lines are much lighter and less prominent. The most important thing when drawing hair is still the line speed. And fortunately, in digital drawing, any imperfect stroke can be undone until it fits.

  • Once youre satisfied with your work, you can progress on to drawing a live model.
  • It is essential to use the light source when working from a live model or a cast model.
  • When drawing, ensure that the light is casting shadows from above and from the left of your head.
  • This is because light leaves a shadow under the eyebrows, upper lip, nose, and chin.
  • Pro Tip: Drawing below proper lighting is essential because the shadows cast on the body will delineate the forms of the body correctly.

Drawing The Female Head

To help you make sure that both sides of the head will be of equal width and that the facial features in later steps will be evenly spaced start your drawing by first making a vertical line through the middle of your drawing area. Next draw a circle for the top part of the head and from that project two lines that first go to the jaw area and then curve inwards and go down again at a sharper angle to finally form the curve of the chin.

As this is a female face for the sake of this tutorial we will make the chin fairly small and narrow.

Why Proportions Are So Important

How to Draw a Person & get Proportions Right Easy Step by Step | Art Drawing Tutorial

Like I told you my objective here is to draw a well-proportion dummy. Teaching my students I realize for beginners is much easy if we focus on creating a dummy instead of going for muscle groups when drawing a person. Newbies tend to focus on drawing perfectly the biceps or the pecs and forget about the big picture: well-balanced proportions.

Lets start with the tutorial.

The 8 heads

As you can see in the image above, I placed 8 heads, one on top of each other. Those 8 heads will represent the ideal human body proportions. They will help us measure the different parts of the body.

Learn The Proportions Of The Human Body

  • Drawing people requires someone to maintain the appropriate pose.
  • Pro Tip: One meaningful way to keep your drawings in proportion is to hold your pencil and lift it in front of you to align it with your model.
  • Hold the pencils tip at the top of the models head and use your thumb or index finger to mark where the models chin is located.
  • Place a pencil on the paper and mark these guidelines while holding this measurement.
  • Once you have the guidelines, you can draw your head at the appropriate scale and add details now or when the drawing is complete.

Outline The Torso Head And Limbs

  • Outline the head. Make it oval at the center of segment one and two of the eight lined sections you created earlier in step one above.
  • Block two, the shoulder and neck slopes halfway a heads height.
  • From the middle axis, measure a whole heads height and mark the point. This point marks the place the shoulder will be.
  • The width of the male figures shoulders is approximately two HH, or less sometimes. A females shoulder is one-half of the HH, but it can be broader or slimmer.
  • The elbow and waist should be three head heights from the tip of the head. Measure and mark the point.

The measurement of the hips of a man is one and half HH. A womans hips are up to two HH, although this is not so with everyone.

  • For the feet, create a mark on the eighth line. The width of the foot should be about half a HH.

Use The Same Frame To Draw A Female

If you are looking to draw a female character, there are a few key points to adjust without changing much of what we’ve done.

If you draw areas like the waist, limbs, shoulder and neck to be slimmer and curvier, it can imply a more feminine figure. Even though I’m changing up a lot of the curves in the body, it still maintains the structural frame of the figure.

Complete The Skin Shading

Start from the left side of the face and work from the outside to the center. This will help to keep the shadow effect that youve already started on the left side of the nose. Shade with your darkest pencil along the outside edge of the face, moving lighter as you approach the underside of the center of the eye. Keep the shading light here until you start to reach the dark shading thats already in place next to the nose.

Adding darker shading on the side helps to mirror the shadow effect across that side of the face.

Working up to the forehead, keep your shading light as you move up the outside edge above the left eyebrow. As you shade towards the hairline at the top center of the face, keep your pencil as light as possible. The middle and right of the forehead should be some of your lightest shading to highlight the shadow coming down the left side of the face.

As you shade, think about where light would naturally hit the face and lighten your touch accordingly.

Continue to shade lightly across the right side of the face, adding in slightly darker shading directly underneath the center of the lower lip. As you move onto the neck, shade from left to right, keeping the dark shading for around three-quarters of the neck with a small triangle of lighter shading on the right side. Finally, shade the inside of the ears on both sides in both light and dark patterns to reflect where light would naturally fall.

Sometimes even the same face looks completely different in the morning than it does in the evening.

In this step-by-step guide we will learn some basic guidelines that portrait, caricature, comic and anime artists all over the world have been using for many years when painting realistic faces. Of course, these are not mandatory rules and every artist can adapt and reinterpret them to their own style. With a task as challenging as the female face, it can be tremendously helpful to practice and keep this guide in mind.
