Cartoon Pirate Drawing Lesson

How to draw a Pirate Hat – Style 1

In the beginning

I wanted to make sure that the stance of the character, was fully understood, before I started laying down the lines.

To make this easier I drew a simple framework of basic shapes. Notice how the orange line curves around with the figure?

This “line of action” helps to cement ahead of time

What sort of position, this cartoon pirate will be in.

Something else I wanted to add though are a few extra colored indicators

Markings which signify key, unique physical features in the drawing those that will again, give you a much better understanding, for how this lesson will play out.

Of course there on the page in front of you

Feel free to either sketch out a simple framework like mine, using light pencil strokes . Or, if you like

Simply visualize whats going on keep a mental note, and allow this initial structure to work as a reminder, for how the shape and form in your characters stance could play out.

Below, you can see green and purple. Green marks off the pirates sword, hat and hook. And purple marks off the general area, where Id like to draw the head, of the pirates pet parrot.

Here it is

OK. Ready to begin? Great!

Begin by sketching in some simple features of the face those like an eye patch, and his big nose sort of like this

Working our way out now from what weve just drawing, go ahead and bring out some more of the features, those like the eye part of the skull on his hat , and the mouth area.

Adding Facial Hair To Pirate Halloween Costume

To create pirate makeup, darken the childs eyebrows with eye shadow. Add an eye patch to one eye, and add brown shadow under the uncovered eye to mimic dark circles. Dip a stippling sponge in wet brown eye shadow or face paint, and then dab onto the chin and above the lip to give your pirate an unshaven look. Another option is to leave the top lip bare of makeup and adhere a fake mustache using eyelash glue, spirit gum or liquid latex. Tip: Be sure to test for any allergies before using any of these products, and have the proper remover on hand. Also, be sure to read all the information on product labels. Put together a costume of ripped clothing and add accessories like a bandana, a pirate hat, gold coins, a clip-on earring, hook or stuffed parrot let your creativity run wild to give your pirate a unique look.

Handprint Pirate Craft Variations

The way we made this craft is the simplest, least messy way to make this craft. There are however, a few different ways you can customize this craft to make it unique!

First, you can use paint instead of markers for the bandana and beard. If you do this, youll want to be sure your paper is thick enough so it doesnt curl and get damaged by the paint.

You can also replace the 3D googly eye with a drawn on eye. If you draw on the eye, youll be able to make your pirate look cute, angry, happy or sad!

Finally, you could glue small pom poms or curled paper onto the beard to give it a 3D appearance. To make the curled paper, simply cut out short, thin strips of paper, then curl them around a pencil or pen. Then, take the curled paper and glue it all over the pirates beard.

Customizing a simple craft like this one is one of our favorite ways to get kids creativity flowing! If you place a bunch of random crafting supplies in front of them once theyve made the base pirate, youll be amazed by the combinations and creations theyll make.

Besides making their pirate unique, customizing their craft will also lengthen the time it takes to create their pirate. This is great way to keep the kids busy longer on one activity during the summer!

Drawing cartoon pirates: some fun facts before starting sketching!

    • Pirates would pierce their ears in order to improve their eyesight!
    • Pirate ships didn’t have black sails. Doing so would give their prey a clue of their malicious intentions!
    • The captain was elected through a vote.

    Step 1

Do you think you know what it takes to draw some good pirates? I’m sure you do! So let’s take a second to refresh our memory! First, we can’t ignore the single most important element: the eyepatch .

The pirate also wear a hat with the image of a skull in front . Take also a good look at the costume , the boots and the sword. This pirate is dressed in black but you can always play with the colors to change the mood of your characters.

    Step 2

Taking a look at the basic shapes, we can see that most of them are rectangles. The costume looks like a modern trench coat which gives the pirate a more classy attitude. The hair could be longer to give your pirate a more dirty look!

    Step 3

In this example, we’re gonna draw a young amputated pirate. Let’s begin with a circle for the head and a rectangle for the body. Then, fill half of the head in black to represent the scarf and do the same on the body to draw the pants.

Continue to draw your character by adding the arms, the right leg and a piece of wood to replace the amputated left leg. I also put a hook instead of the left hand. Finish your drawing by sketching details like the eye, the mouth and the skull on the scarf.
