Once you’ve finished your pencil drawing of a monarch butterfly, you can find your favorite pens and begin going over the graphite lines with ink.

After you’ve gone over the outline in pen, slowly begin filling in the pattern with black ink. Remember to check back with your reference photograph often at this stage to ensure you’re capturing the design correctly.

Tip: If you want to add depth to a white area of a black and white illustration, consider using stippling or hatching. This is also a useful way to indicate the delicacy of the butterfly’s wings.

Want to embellish your monarch butterfly? An easy way to do this is by adding a simple black border and placing a few sparkles or bubbles around the body and wingslike fairy dust. How To Draw And Paint A Butterfly: Step By Step

I’d like to take you step-by-step though drawing a butterfly. I think, for me, what is so interesting in this process is that even things that appear simple take on a complexity when you are drawing them. I love the detailed perspective and newfound intimacy with an object you are slowly bringing to life on paper. It may seem complicated as you sit down and get a close look. If you are like me, you may be taking in all the details and wonder where to even start. Well let’s break this down in small easy steps. First I’ll show you the supplies I used:

Please feel free to use this as a general guideline. I just wanted to show you what I used but you can improvise with what you have. No need for fancy equipment. This is all about fun and experimentation!

Step two: Choose which paper you would like to draw on. For this example, I chose a 98lb mixed media paper. The reason I chose this paper was two-fold. This first reason is that it takes water and I plan to use watercolors to paint it. The second reason is that this paper is thinner than standard watercolor paper . I would like the paper to be a little more transparent and you will see why in the next step.

Here I use washi tape to affix the picture.

So here you have a nice little sketch. At this point you may want to sit down with your sketch and fine tune the details a little bit. You can perfect some of the areas or erase unwanted marks.

Once I have gone over all the pencil with my marker, I gently erase the pencil marks.

Draw Butterflies With This Simple Tutorial

Plan your drawing.

This is the time to think about the composition of your drawing and consider the angle youll want to take on the butterfly. Will you draw it from overhead, with its wings stretched out? Is it fluttering in flight or perched delicately on a flower petal? Think about the background of your composition as well and draw in some basic shapes to represent the flowers, plants, or objects your butterfly will interact with. Before you jump in, use your reference photos to plan your perspective.

Start with the wings.

Sketch in the general shapes of the butterflys wings. Closely observe the foreshortened effects in the photos you reference. While it might not be immediately evident, butterflies actually have two sets of wings, with the top wings overlapping the bottom ones. The upper wings are often more triangular in shape while the lower wings are more rounded, but this varies between species. Block in the basic shapes of the wings and use this layer as an underdrawing to help you refine the details as you work.

Sketch the butterflys body.

Butterflies also have six legs, with three on each side of their bodies. Consider the positioning of the butterfly against its landscape or background. If its perched on a flower, you probably need to draw its legs. But if its fluttering through the air, legs might not be necessary for a stylized sketch.

How To Draw A Butterfly

This step by step drawing tutorial will show you how to draw an easy butterfly.

The type of butterfly this resembles is that of a Monarch Butterfly. It goes along with my step by step Monarch Butterfly Painting Tutorial.

Drawing butterflies can be kind of tricky because you need to repeat the same exact lines so they are symmetrical on both sides.

Draw lightly with pencil first on a sheet of drawing paper. You may need to sketch the line a few times before you get the desired one so have a good eraser handy too!

All the detailed lines on the wings look intimidating but if taken one step at a time, it actually isnât too hard.

What is a butterfly garden? Butterfly gardens are planted to attract butterflies and other species, such as moths, hummingbirds, and bees. Not only are butterfly gardens pretty, but they also help to revive and sustain butterfly populations, which have been affected by habitat destruction. Urban butterfly gardens can by an oasis for wildlife within the city.

What makes a butterfly garden different from a regular garden? Butterfly gardens contain plants that feed adult butterflies as well as their caterpillars. Native plants are especially important, because, while butterflies visit many types of flowers for nectar, the caterpillars are usually restricted to eat one or two types of wild plants.

Butterfly gardeners may also install butterfly houses, moist sand, water features, and offerings of fruit for the butterflies to use.

Butterfly gardens are educational as well. Children can be introduced to and learn to appreciate nature in such gardens. Many city parks and some schools now include butterfly gardens, planted with flowers such as milkweed, purple cone flower, and butterfly bush. Butterfly festivals may be held in the fall, at which thousands of newly winged butterflies are released for attendees to enjoy.

How To Draw A Butterfly: Base Sketch Step By Step

Step 1: Draw the butterfly body

We start drawing our butterfly with a simple, but fairly realistic body outline.

Draw a small flat oval for the head. Then add a wider barrel shaped part of the body this is called a thorax. Oh, here we have an awesome bowling pin!

Lets add another part, to make a butterfly body out of the bowling pin. Draw a narrow pill shape down from the pin bottom. This part of the butterflys body is called the abdomen.

Step 2: Sketch the edge lines for wings

The next step is very simple just six straight lines. These will mark the edges of the butterflys wings.

We have two lines going up from around where our bowling pin would have shoulders.

Two more lines, slightly tilted down from the lower part of the thorax the barrel part of the body.

Finally, we add two more lines pointing down for the lower edge of wings starting at the upper part of the abdomen that is the pill-shaped part of the butterfly body.

Step 3: Sketch the wing outlines

Another easy step draw four vertical lines to complete the butterfly wings.

Join the two ends of the two upper lines on each side these are the larger wings. They are called fore wings they are forward when the butterfly flies.

The lines for the smaller lower wings go from the end of the bottom lines to about the middle of the large wings. And to continue our biology lesson, the smaller wings are called hind wings.

Step 4: Round off the wings

Step 5: Complete the butterfly wings

Drawing Butterfly Wing Patterns: Step By Step

Step 1: How to draw a butterfly wing patterns

Lets improve our easy butterfly drawing. Start by drawing the base pattern on the larger fore wings. First, draw the prolonged oval at the top of the wing that will be our base wing cell.

Then add few cells coming down off the main cell in our drawing, we fitted three on each side. You might draw more or less, depending on the size of your butterflys wings and the size of the cells you draw.

Step 2: Add the base cell pattern to the hind wings

Now we draw similar prolonged tear-shaped cells on the lower small wings the hind wings. We have fitted three to the size of our wing. They all touch the spot in the middle of the wing.

Step 3: Fill in the small cells

In this step, we fill the remaining blank space on the wing with small ovals. Notice they are all following the outer shape of the wings and we draw as many as we can fit in.

Lets Turn Back On Those Layers

Okay so lets turn back on those layers. And well turn this back to white. And I can see I need to fix this a little bit cause I know it came down there, okay. Okay, great. So now we can turn off that sketch layer, probably for good. And then Im gonna come in and do the body. And you know what? I will just make it solid black. Okay, lets pump this back up to about, I dont know, 50% Color this body in.

Okay, I think its looking pretty good. Im gonna go back to my white layer, select that, select the white, bring my ink brush down a little bit to about 15%. Im gonna give them a little details down the side? Thats probably good. Alright. Alright, I think Im gonna just go and add a couple more things on my dark layer, Im going to go and just get that charcoal and just make a few alterations. Im gonna fill that in. I think I like that small, okay. Im going to my white layer and I get to grab the white. I think Im just going to do a few more.

Composition And Rough Drawing Of The General Shapes Of Thebutterfly

How to draw a beautiful butterfly on flower tree {4K} || Sketch || Farju Art & craft

Once you have decided on the size of the paper you will be working on, you can think about your composition and then draw it out in pencil.

Think carefully about how you will position the butterfly on your page. I decided I wanted to place my butterfly at an angle to make it a more interesting composition.

I recommend using a 2B lead pencil to first softly sketch out the general shapes of the butterfly wings and body. Make sure you are applying only a very light pressure onto the pencil to achieve very light pencil marks on the page.

I started my butterfly drawing by sketching out the general circle and oval shapes of the butterfly body and then added the sections of each wing. As you can see, the pencil mark is very light, but hopefully, you can see the general shape.

I then carefully observed the patterns and lines within the wings of the butterfly and sketched those in.
