    Add Shading And Definition

    ThoughtCo/Helen South

Now that you’ve outlined the shadows and highlights of your dog’s face, you can begin to focus on the details. Begin by gently erasing the guidelines you created.

Next, use your pencil to add more subtle detail. Use a light touch because it’s easier to add more shadow than it is to erase it when you go too dark. Work from dark to light across the entire surface of the drawing, gradually building up the texture.

Use soft strokes where fur is short and harder strokes where it’s long.;You can use the eraser to work back over white fur to brighten it and create a softer look.

    Block In Your Dog’s Face

    ThoughtCo/Helen South

On a blank sheet of paper, begin by sketching a reference line to indicate the center of your dog’s face. This is called “blocking in” the features, and it is the first step in any drawing. Make sure the reference line runs between the ears and eyes and through the middle of your dog’s nose.

Check that the angle matches your source photo. Notice that there’s a slight outward curve in the line through the dog’s eyes. They aren’t completely forward on the head.

Next, sketch the curve at the tip of the nose, the mouth, and chin. Pay attention to the spot where the plane changes here as well.

Now that you’ve blocked in the basic shape, you should be able to keep the features lined up as you draw.

    ThoughtCo/Helen South

    With the basic lines of your dog’s face blocked in, you can sketch the head in more detail. Use a light touch as you draw. These guidelines should be faint, so they can be erased later in the process.;

Sketch a curved line where the back of the muzzle meets the head and two lines down the face to give the muzzle some dimension. You can add hints of fur by adding a few loose lines along the shoulders and neck.

Next, sketch your dog’s eyes, making sure the pupils are lined up. Then add the nose and ears. As you draw, note where there are changes of plane near the eyes.

How To Draw A Realistic Dog Face

Step 1 Collect a picture of your dog facing towards you. We only need the face and it should be clear.

Step 2 First of all we need to draw a reference line for the center of the face. It should pass between the eyes and cross the nose. Now draw an outward line from one eye to other.

Step 3 Try to trace the outline of the dog using a tracing paper and include the ears also. Use light touches to sketch the head in detail.

Add some faint lines near the eyes and forehead to show the folds of skin and fur.

Step 4 This is step is the most difficult which includes light shading. Use light touches for highest details. Use short strokes in case of short fur and hard strokes in case of long fur. Shade the dogs nose for smoothness. Use eraser when you want to decrease the concentration and give the final details.

The Secret To Learning How To Draw A Cute Puppy Is To Make Sure That You Draw The Head Extra Large In Fact That Pretty Much Works With Any Baby Version Of An Animal

When young students are learning how make the shapes they want with their pencils, and turn them into something, they have a couple of options.

One is to build their drawing with squares, rectangles and circles, and not erase any of the lines that connect them. The look is kind of basic, but can certainly look fine with things like robots, buildings and so on.

The next option is to still start with the squares, rectangles and circle, but erase the lines that connect them, such as when legs connect to bodies, etc. The trick is that most young artists arent in the habit of erasing as part of drawing, so they often forget to do this. Not terrible, but if they trace their drawing with a marker before they erase, they might start obsessing on getting their hands on some White Out, which could present other problems.

The final option is to have children draw very simple shapes that already have things like legs connecting to bodies. Its kind of like drawing a simple silhouette. This way tails and legs are attached, theres no need to erase anything, and the final drawing looks a bit more finished too.

    Softening The Puppy Drawings

I find sketching easier when I focus on the process rather than the result. For me, that means drawing over my guide lines, rather than erasing as I go along. For our first puppy, its time to soften up the body by sketching curved lines over the straight ones of the parallelogram.

For the puppy on the right, well soften up the drawing adding a couple of curved lines at the top and bottom of the oval. These additions make the legs and shoulder blades facing us a bit more defined.;By this stage, your;puppy drawing is;basically complete! If your goal was simply to learn how to draw an easy puppy, youre done!
