See how the texture of the paper becomes more noticeable when you apply light pressure on the pencil. This makes the transition from dark to light go more smoothly.

If you want to make the objects in your composition look three-dimensional, shade them in a way that makes it appear as if the light falls on them from only one side. This means that the main light source should be the brightest. Light is a very important point because it should reveal the shape and volume of objects. It is best to choose a light source coming from a top corner . This way the main shadows, highlights and, most importantly, reflections will be well-defined. The drawing will look more realistic where there’s only one light source because the transitions between tones are more visible. The light should not be “blinding,” it should not be in front of the artist or illuminate the object “head-on.” Avoid positioning the light source in the “contour,” or behind the object being drawn. This lighting either completely deprives the object of shadows and tones, or completely plunges it into darkness. In these cases, the volume of the object is very difficult to depict and basically not visible.

S To Draw An Apple For Children

Step 1:

Using the circular lid and a pencil, draw a circle on the paper. The size of the disc determines the size of your apple, so choose accordingly. You can also draw the circle free-hand. Do not worry if the circle is not perfect, as you can make changes to it later.

Step 2:

Draw a wavy line inside the circle, leaving some space from the top, as shown in the figure. The line should have a dip in the center, and the ends of the line need to overlap the circle.

Step 3:

Draw an arc at the bottom of the circle. The line should have a raised center, unlike the first line. The ends of this line should overlap the circle. This will be the bottom of your apple. Your apple is now taking shape. Can you see it yet?

Step 4:

Just below the first wavy line, draw a small curve with a slight dip in the center, as shown in the figure.

Step 5:

On the small curve you drew in step 4, draw a stalk and a leaf. Make sure the stalk is broad at the top and tapered at the bottom. The leaf should be slightly bigger than the stalk.

Step 6:

Add veins on the leaf to make it look real.

Step 7:

Erase the extra lines around the apple.

Step 8:

Now that your apple is done, outline the apple using a black sketch pen. Next, color the body in red, the stalk in brown, and the leaf in green.

Thats it! Your apple is ready. Encourage your child to practice and draw it multiple times. You could also ask your child to click this link and spark their interest in this delicious and nutritious fruit.

Make Colored Pencils More Realistic

Being able to draw objects and people so that they look realistic is a great way to impress others and show off your observational skills. Many artists strive for realism in all of their creations. The ability to paint realistically is some basic knowledge that all artists must take the time to learn. Of course, once you understand the basics you can move on to different styles, but learning realism will help you understand your creations better as you change your style.

Self-taught artists are often looking for the secret to conveying volume as they would observe in the real world. Theyll often redraw one photograph after another, trying to draw all the details and depict every line visible to the eye. The results still often look like a flat photo, although sometimes it will look like the original subject.

The secret to drawing volume is to capture the subtleties that youll notice when you visually analyze an object. Youll want to avoid creating fake or forced volume by darkening the edges of an object to feign the appearance of shading. Of course, it will take many hours of pencil-drawing lessons and practice to master all of the shading techniques. However, we will try our best to explain the basic secrets of drawing an object to look realistic. Well be using the example of drawing an apple using colored pencils.

Before drawing any realistic object, we must carefully analyze it:

Materials For How To Draw An Apple

  • Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
  • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
  • BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
  • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
  • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.

Creating Shadow And Highlight

To fill in your outline sketch with shadows and highlights, I recommend using the , which by default is the third brush down on the left.

Pick a dark color that matches the shadows in your photo . Then set the Flow to the minimum 1 percent. Set the brush size to very large.

It is hard to see what you are doing when the Image Layer is turned on. So for this stage, I recommend setting it to 100 percent opacity again, dragging it up with your finger to make it the top layer, and then toggling it on and off with a double-tap. Turn it on when you need to take a look. Then turn it off when you are ready to draw. Do this regularly to remind yourself of how it should look.

Using light strokes, gently begin sketching, starting with the darkest areas. The marks will initially look too faint, but you can make them darker by repeatedly drawing on top of the same layer. Using this layering technique, you can gradually build up soft and subtle tonal variations.

Where you need to create hard edges, you can use the Eraser tool , set to 100 percent Flow with a small brush size, to strip away some of the shadow.

You can also use the Eraser tool with a larger brush size and lower Flow to add highlights.

Orange Finished Shaded Drawing

How To Draw an APPLE using Pencils

As you continue shading the orange there are a few more things to be aware of. One is that the shadow will be darker towards the base and lighter as it progresses outwards away form the orange. Another is that there will be a lighter spots on the dark side of the orange. This spot is caused by the light reflecting from the surface the orange is sitting on.

For a more detailed explanation of light and shadow when shading some basic shapes see:

Shade the wrinkle areas of the orange darker on the sides that are facing away from the light and lighter on the sides that face towards it.

Once the orange is almost fully shaded you can add a series of tiny dark spots to reinforce its bumpy texture. You can also add tiny light spots using a kneaded eraser with a pointy tip.

It may take some practice and experimenting to really get the texture so dont give up if it does not look right the first time.

How To Draw A Portrait With Apple Pencil

Got a new Apple Pencil? Once the initial novelty wears off, you might find that it spends most of its time magnetically clipped to the side of your iPad Pro or, worse, stuck in the back of a drawer. After all, there are only so many PDFs to annotate and screenshots to mark up.

Which is a great shame, because what your Apple Pencil really wants to do is create art. You only appreciate the true joy of owning one when you draw with it. So, why not follow this handy how-to guide and start sketching lifelike portraits of friends and family? Its a really fun hobby.

As Kate Winslet once said in Titantic, Draw me like one of your French girls.

First, youll need an app to create your portrait. There are loads of Apple Pencil sketching apps on the market, ranging from cheap and basic to complex and expensive.

Examine The Tone And Volume

Let’s observe our apple together! We have noticed that the apple is green, medium tone, not very light, but also not dark. Lets carefully examine the tone because this is where it all starts.

Tone refers to the degree of illumination or darkness in different areas of the drawing. To achieve realism in your artwork, you need to correctly convey the distribution of light on the surface of the depicted object. The most illuminated areas will be the lightest these are called the highlights. These are the lightest spots on the surface of the object. The farthest parts of the object from the light source will be the darkest and will be the shadows.

To add volume to your image, you need to be able to make transitions between tones. Try to practice and make a gradual transition from dark to light. This will help you understand how to make tonal transitions smoothly and how to adjust the pressure on the pencil to get both light and dark areas.

Draw A Wave In The Bottom Of The Circle

Draw another wave-like pattern at the bottom of the circle with its centre raised, as shown in the figure. Once again, let the ends of the wave overlap with the sides of the circle. The bottom curve is where the stamen of the apple is located. The drawing now probably looks like someone wearing an over-sized pair of glasses, but it actually is the body of the fruit. Easy to draw, right?

Variants Of Incident Light On An Apple

The paper is considered the lightest area, so the highlights can be left uncolored. Keep in mind, the farther the object is from the light source, the darker its tone.

Objects with volume on a plane cast a shadow in the direction opposite of the light source. If the light falls from the top left, then the shadow will be located on the bottom right. Shadows are less visible on dark surfaces than on lighter ones.

Before we start drawing our object, its important to represent it in its basic geometric form.

Learn How To Draw An Apple Both Inside And Out With This Fun And Easy Step By Step Tutorial

Whether your students are drawing the alphabet, or studying tree cycles, or looking for fall art, learning how to draw an apple can be the first step in making that happen.

Without any inspiration, many students might opt for just drawing a red circle and adding a stem, but that doesnt always say apple in the way that a few more details can.

If your students learn how to add a stem and leaf that look like its coming out of the center, and maybe also show the inside of the apple, all of a sudden you have a very descriptive apple drawing.

Are your students in the upper elementary grades? Then try challenging them to think how a shadow might be added. They need to decide where the source of light is coming from, and then draw heavier and darker on the opposite side.

Use Image Layers For A Trace Of Genius

Drawing from life can be tricky. Especially if you are new to it. So its a great idea to start your drawing by tracing.

Tracing is a great way to learn how to draw. It allows you to focus on your mark-making technique without worrying about getting your subjects proportions right. Also, tracing faces and bodies improves your knowledge of human anatomy. That will make you better at drawing people from memory.

    Tracing with Apple Pencil

Fortunately, Photoshop Sketch is ideal for tracing. Just tap the Plus button and select Add Image Layer. You can then select an image from your photo library. Now tap Plus again and add a Sketch Layer to draw on in front of the Image Layer.

Use the Pencil tool to sketch an outline with light strokes. If you find it hard to see your pencil marks because the photo is too dark, tap on the image layer and slide down the Opacity to make it fainter.

When youve finish drawing the outline, hide the image layer to check your handiwork.

Draw A Stalk And A Leaf

How to draw a realistic Apple with Pencil Sketch with Light and Shades

Draw two slightly-curved lines projecting upward from the centre of the small curve youve just drawn. Join the ends of these lines. There, you have the stalk! It should look like a gently sloping elongated triangle.

Now, draw a leaf from the left base of the stalk, as shown in the figure. An easy way to draw a leaf is to draw a line projecting outwards from the base of the stalk and then drawing an oval-shaped blade around it.

    Darker Markings And Circling Strokes

  • Add some darker coloured markings using C300 which is a lovely deep blue to gently darken the markings in the shadow edge area
  • Create some circling strokes through the centre of the apple, with the same colour pencil laid on the side.
  • Add some of the same blue to the area at the bottom of the apple.
  • Colour the stem by using your colour C520 to create the shadow edge just in from the right side.
  • On the left side of the stem add some C610
  • Time To Sweat The Details

Once youve add the shadows, highlights and color, your portrait should be starting to take shape, but it still will look a little out of focus. That means its time to begin adding the details.

Personally, I like to use the pencil tool for this, although you could use any brush style you like. Just make the size smaller, so you can draw the details accurately.

Make sure you create a new Sketch Layer to draw the details on. That way, it is easy to erase any mistakes without ruining all the hard work you did on the shadows and color.

You might find it easiest to add the details by tracing from the photo again, in which case be sure to set your Image Layer to visible. Drag it up, so that it sits below your detail layer, but above your color and shadow layers. Toggle the image layer on and off to see how all the layers look together.
