How To Draw A Bumblebee: Base Sketch Step By Step

Step 1: Draw the base head and body shapes

Start your bumblebee drawing with a simple circle for the head.

The body is a kind of beetroot shape one curve on the top for the back, meeting with a slightly flatter curve for the bottom belly in a nice pointed bumblebee bum.

Step 2: Draw the eyes and antennae

Bumblebees have very large compound eyes. Our drawing is a very simple cartoon version of a bumblebee, so lets give it large cartoon eyes. Draw those as two big ovals, with small ovals inside for the pupils.

Then add two antennae to the top of the head. These are simple arcs, and keeping with cartoon exaggeration, we are adding big pom-pom circles at the end.

Step 3: Draw the bumblebees body stripes

One of the trademarks of any self-respecting bumblebee is its yellow-black body striping. In this step, we are adding the lines that will mark those stripes. The curved lines suggest the shape of the rounded body on the flat paper.

We will have two black stripes and a black bum that adds up to drawing five curved lines.

Step 4: Draw the wings

The last and very important body part for a bumblebee is its wings. Again, following cartoon simplification, draw these as two teardrop shapes that are attached to the back of the bumblebee.

As a final small detail, lets mark a little cap on the top of our bumblebees head with another slightly curved line.

Adding The Finishing Touches

The last step in this tutorial is optional, but it is a lovely way to create a smooth and seamless bee drawing. You simply want to erase all of the outlines in your bee drawing by painting over them with the corresponding color of the area.

Well done for making it to the end of this detailed but easy bee drawing tutorial. We hope that you have taken a lot from our guide, and that you now feel more confident with drawing insects, using construction lines, and building up realistic layers of color.

Youve almost completely finished your bee drawing now! Before you can move on to the coloring stage, we will just add in some final details.

First, you can add some thin lines to the wings of your bee. These will form the veiny patterns of your bees wings. The last few details are ones you can be a bit creative with!

Weve shown a few that you can add, such as little hairs poking off the bee and lines to show movement around the wings, but you should add in details that you think would look good!

This is a chance for you to show off your creative skills and flair by adding some fun details to your bee drawing. How will you finish off your awesome drawing?

How to Draw a Realistic Bee

Drawing realistically can be intimidating, but if youve been around here for very long at all, you know that Im a firm believer that ANYONE CAN LEARN TO DRAW. The trick is teaching your eye to lead your hand, rather than trying to get your hand to follow your head . Beyond that, its simply learning the tricks of communicating with your viewer, helping your hand to develop and staying out of your own head.

To help share this a little further, I am excited to have a YouTube video up where I let you peak over my shoulder while I freehand draw this darling bumble bee!

Draw Highlights On The Hairs

The last step in drawing a bee is to draw the details in the bees fur. To draw the fur add value to the darkest areas by drawing lines in different directions, starting from dark to light. The lines that you are drawing are not single hairs. The lines are actually the dark shadows that the fur creates.

After you have added some graphite to the area, lightly blend the lines. Next, take your eraser and pull out some highlights. After you have taken out some highlights, continue to draw more lines, blend then erase more highlights. The more you do this, the more layers of fur you will create.

Mix A Little Science And Art And Learn How To Draw A Bee Dont Just Label Their Body Parts Students Will Remember More If They Draw Them From Scratch

You could have your students fill in labels on boring worksheets, OR you could have them draw insects from scratch so they have to create all those body parts themselves.

This bee also doubles as a good lesson in symmetry, as the right and left side should match each other. The thorax and abdomen are fairly easy to do, but those bent legs are a little more challenging. If fact, if anyone is struggling with them, I recommend that the end feet are ignored. A legs with one bend will look just fine too.

Balancing The Color Of The Background

The next few images will show you how to continue to add and blend the color of the background.

Blend in the values of the background to soften the lines. Work from dark to light just as you did with the pencil.

Use an HB or 2B pencil to make the darker sections darker if needed. Lightly blend in the background with the shape of the bee. You do not want a halo around the bee.

Drawing Tip: Do not press down too hard with the blended. Doing so will ruin the tooth of the paper, making it impossible to add more graphite.

Did you know that in its lifetime, a worker bee will make around 1 teaspoon of honey? In one trip, a honey bee will land on 75 different flowers? Or that honey is made of 25% water and 75% sugars? Yes, there are many fun facts that we can learn from these amazing creatures that are essential for life . Without bees, life as we know it wouldn’t be possible.

let’s study a real bee!

Bees are very easy to recognize. They have a sting , a black and yellow abdomen and small forelegs . They also have small antenna on the head and sharp mouth parts . The two wings are located near the head. Also, even if it’s not clear in this picture, the bee has two middle legs and two hind legs. They are colored in yellow with black stripes being added to the middle part of the body. Notice the irregular shape of the wings and the dark color that is covering the head and the front legs.

Outlining The Bees Antennae

As we continue to focus on construction, we are going to move on to laying down the basic shape of the bee antennae. Using two simple bent lines, attach the antennae to the left side of the bees head, just below the halfway point.

To capture a realistic perspective, the top antenna should begin within the head oval and should be significantly longer than the other. The lower antenna can extend almost directly down from the side of the head oval and should be much shorter.

How to Draw a Realistic Bumble Bee Easy | Drawing and Coloring for Beginners

Step 1: Sketch the head and thorax

Even a semi-realistic bee drawing starts with just a few simple shapes. Draw a small, slightly tilted oval for the head. Then add a circle next to it – this will be the thorax – the middle part of the bee’s body that holds legs and wings.

Step 2: Sketch the abdomen

The next part of the bee’s body is called the abdomen – that is the belly part that holds the heart and stomach. Here it is bent and looks a bit like a peanut. Draw the upper arc first. Then draw the lower fold in the belly – two open “V” arcs.

Step 3: Sketch the bee’s wings

It is time to give our bee some wings. Start with the front wing. Mark the “shoulder” with a little circle. Then draw a long swooping arc for the upper wing edge. Add another smooth line for the lower edge – this one has a slight “S” curve, with the wing starting narrow then widening out. Close the shape with another short curved line.

The rear wing is partially hidden behind the bee’s body. We can draw it with just two swooping arcs widening out, again closed at the end with a short angled curve.

Step 4: Add body details

Let’s add a few details before we dive into drawing the bee’s legs. Draw another slightly smaller oval inside the head – this will be the bee’s large compound eye.

Then draw a simple curved triangle, similar to bird’s beak – this is a simplified outline of the bee’s mouth, called “mandibles”.

Step 5: Sketch the middle leg

Step 6: Sketch the front and rear leg

Step 8: Sketch the flower

Crafting The Middle Legs

Draw And Color A Realistic Bee Step By Step Instructions Made Easy

Bees, like other insects, have six legs, two at the front, two in the middle, and two at the back. It is now time to construct the middle legs which extend from the thorax circle. Begin with the middle leg that is closest to the front of the body, and extends from the center of the bottom line of the thorax circle. This leg is the one furthest from our view, so it will be like the second front leg we drew in the last step.

For the larger of the two middle legs, you can use the same pattern as for the big front leg, but this leg should be angled slightly towards the back of the canvas.
