Step 11: Final Touches

How to Draw a Realistic Frog

Frogs in real life are not just one block color. Their underbelly and bottom lips are a much paler green or yellow, so be sure to add in some shading to the underbelly for definition. You can also choose to add some flecks of yellow on the back of the frog.

To make it easier to see the details of the shadows, we suggest adding a line of highlights around the outside of your frog.

To make the eyes shine as they do in real life, draw a highlight surrounding the iris and blend it into the red or yellow that you colored it with. Add an even lighter, almost white, highlight at the top of the eye to show its curved, three-dimensional shape.

The feet of the frog are not green, but are usually a darker color or perhaps even a brighter color like their eyes. In our example, we chose to color the frogs feet a red shade, adding the highlight around the outside edge of its toes with a green shade.

The higher the cost of the egg, the more likely you are to get one. However, the Unicorn is a legendary rarity pet, so that means its a very low percentage to hatch one, even in the more expensive eggs.

What is a predator of a frog? Adult frogs have many predators including storks, birds of prey, crows, gulls, ducks, terns, herons, pine martens, stoats, weasels, polecats, badgers, otters and snakes. Some frogs are killed, but rarely eaten, by domestic cats, and large numbers are killed on the roads by motor vehicles.

Lets start with a simple cartoon frog.

Step 3: Constructing The Foreleg Or Arm

How to draw a realistic frog in MS Paint. (Tutorial)

While we drew two back legs, we are only going to draw a single front leg or arm. The reason behind this is because of the angle of the frogs body, the other arm is hidden behind the torso. Ovals are the basis for all the parts of this frog, so it will come as no surprise that you need to use an oval to represent the arm, So far, all of our ovals have been facing upwards in a similar direction, but this arm is going to be angled downwards, from roughly the center of the torso.

At this stage, your drawing should look something like this.

Step 7: Detailing The Eyes Nostril And Mouth

It is now time to draw the details of the frogs face, being the frogs mouth, nostril, and eyes. Once the following steps have been completed, you should have something similar to our example below. But of course, no one is the same, so feel free to use your artistic initiative!

  • For the mouth, draw a line going across the heads construction oval, from left to right  it does not have to be exactly straight, which will add definition.
  • The frogs nostril at first glance may seem like just a dot, but it should resemble a tiny letter L facing the wrong way.
  • For the iris of the frogs eye, draw a vertical oval with pointed tips in the middle of the eyes construction circle. The pupil will then take the form of another tiny oval inside the pointed oval.

How To Draw A Frog: Base Sketch Step By Step

Step 1: Sketch the base head and body shapes

Usually, for an easy drawing, we draw the base head and body shapes as simple ovals. But let’s try something different today, and sketch them bit more square-ish.

Let’s start with the head shape. Draw the two sides first, slightly bent and widening out. Then add the bottom “chin” arc and a slightly flatter arc for the top of the head. See – almost an oval, but with some sharp corners – a kind of rounded rectangle.

Draw the body in a similar way: we only need the bottom arc here – the top is made by the chin – and the two sides.

Step 2: Sketch the frog’s rear legs

Let’s add some legs to the body next. Going with the square-ish theme, sketch two rounded squares, one on each side of the body – these will be the frog’s folded rear legs.

Then sketch the feet – for now, these are simple widening-out rectangles – convex isosceles trapezoids, if you want to learn some funky geometry terms – with a nicely curved bottom line for the frog’s webbed feet. Finally, mark a centerline on the feet – we will use that later to draw the fingers.

Step 3: Sketch the frog’s arms

Finish the arms with the two of those funky trapezoids for the frog’s webbed hands. These are the same as for the rear feet, just a touch smaller.

Step 4: Sketch the frog’s face

It is time to give our frog a face. Draw two small circles for eyes, place one on each of the two upper head corners.

Finally, add just two simple short lines to mark the nostrils.

An Introduction To The World Of Frogs

While in this tutorial we are focussing on one frog, there are over 4,700 species around the globe. The collective noun for frogs is an army, and the majority of them can jump almost 20 times their own height. Each frog species has its very own croak, which male frogs use to attract their mates. The beautifully varied skin of different frogs is shed completely every single week!

In this tutorial, Ill show you an easy way to draw a frog with a graphite pencil and a variety of ink pens.

Frogs often have an interesting warty texture, and well learn to create its illusion in a drawing. Well also explore the possibilities of tinted grey paper and learn to use it to our advantage.

This technique is an excellent choice for everyday drawing exercises because it helps to save time: the color of the paper provides a base, so the artists task is just to add the darker and the lighter tones.

It is said that using paper in a variety of greys, browns, and other muted hues leads to more realistic results, helps to enhance your drawing skills, and even brings a new perspective to the workflow.

The only way to prove this statement is to try this technique, isnt it?

Step 8: Fine Lining And Shaping Your Frog

How to Draw a Realistic Frog

In this step, we use all the previous construction lines to help us finalize the shape of our frog. This stage is probably the most crucial, and the one where our frog goes from construction lines to its final form. Start by drawing two raised dimples that frame the eyes. To these dimples, add a slight curve and arc to enhance the three-dimensionality of the frogs face.

Continue with the shaping of the face and drawing the bottom lip as a step inward. To make the face look slightly more alive and in motion, you can add some slight curves to the bottom lip.

Using the body construction oval add curves to the body. On the top, you want the body line to curve upwards gently just above the construction oval, and finish the line with a slight downward curve into the back leg oval. Take a line from this back and around the top back leg and join it with the bottom leg. One of the most important parts of the front bottom leg is the curve that makes the leg look bent in the natural sitting position of the frog. Draw around your curvy lines for the webbed feet, and add the shoulder for the upper arm.

This part of the drawing process is definitely the most complex and it may take you several attempts to get the lines perfect. Remember to take your time and enjoy experimenting. The more you try and get it not quite right, the better your eye will get at knowing where to draw the line.

How Hard Is It To Draw A Frog

Drawing frogs does not have to be very difficult at all. Of course, it can seem a daunting task to get the proportions correct. But, if you start with the construction lines as we suggest at the beginning of the tutorial, you will not have any issues at all in completing your life-like frog drawing.

What is frog feet? Three types of feet: A bullfrogs hind foot , a toads front foot , and a tree frogs round-toed front foot Tree frogs have large, round toe pads that help them cling to branches. These toe pads work like suction cups to help the frog cling on to wet leaves and other smooth surfaces.

Is Frog an animal? Amphibians are small vertebrates that need water, or a moist environment, to survive. The species in this group include frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts. All can breathe and absorb water through their very thin skin.

Step 10: Adding The First Tone Color

How to Draw a Realistic Frog step by step

It is now time to set aside your pencil and eraser and whip out your choice of coloring material, whether it be paints, crayons, or your drawing tablet. You can choose to use your freedom of creative expression or use a picture of a frog as a reference when selecting the color you would like to make your frogs body. We suggest using a lighter shade for the tonal color as we will be adding darker shades in the next step. Frogs often have very luminous eyes either bright yellow or red. In our example below, we colored our frogs eyes a scarlet red, but again, this is up to you.

    Step 2: The Back Legs

Your second step is to add in the plan for the back legs. This might be a bit tricky, so follow carefully. Both legs will need to be carefully proportioned, particularly the back leg on the far end of the frog, which is obscured by the body. Lets start from there.

    • Draw a smaller oval, as you see in the example below, leaning the same way as the original oval you drew for the body.
    • Next, draw the back leg in the foreground of the drawing the one closest to the viewer. It must be just less than double the size of the smaller oval you drew for the hind leg at the back.

This is a good way to show depth in your drawing, taking it from a two-dimensional image to one that is three-dimensional.

Step 7: Drawing The Eyes Nostril And Mouth

Let us get down to the face. Begin by hard lining the construction lines of the eyes and draw a second somewhat sharper point oval within the eye and draw another small circle within this oval shape which will act as the pupil of the eye. On the concealed eye we simply hard line only a small part of it as the rest will be concealed.

For the nostril, draw a darkened spot with a slight curve. The nostril should look slightly like an inverted L shape. To define the characteristics of the mouth, draw a line across the head oval. You can add some subtle curves to this line to add some personality to your froggy friend.

Your drawing at this stage should look something like this sketch, but of course with your own artistic flair.

Step 11: Color Highlighting Smearing And Blending

How To Draw A Frog || realistic drawing ||

The coloring in our last step is a little one-note, so it is time to add some highlights, shadows, and excitement. Take a lighter shade of white or yellow and gently shade the belly of your frog from the lower lip. Remember that you also want to emphasize the shadow of this underbelly in some places too, so do not make it purely light.

A good tip for highlighting the outline of the body to differentiate it from the rest of the details is to add a light layer along the outlines. You can look at our example here to help you get this technique right.

For a mirror or gloss effect on the eyes, we do the same trick mentioned above by adding a highlight to the center of the eye. You want to make sure that this highlight blends into the red around it. You can use this highlighting technique on other parts of the body that will catch the light, like the webbed feet, the top of the back, and the tip of the nose.

Now that we have added highlights, we need to add some shadows too. The most important places for shadows are the bottom areas, including the bottom of the belly, below the eyes and the ridges of the nose, and the bottom of the curves of the back legs.
