Version : How To Draw An Easy More Realistic Owl

Many owl species have asymmetrical ears. Any guesses what a group of owls is called? A parliament! In this version, you will learn how to draw a more realistic version of an owl. This is just as simple as the previous version.

We will again begin by drawing the face. For it, you will draw an oblong oval shape. As told before, it is quite effortless.

Adding Details And Fine Lines To Your Owl

Now, this step may be an intimidating jump for you, but remember that you have already laid all the difficult groundwork. This step may seem intimidating but with some patience and will, you can achieve the correct and realistic details as shown. Using tiny little strokes, frame the owls face with two circles. You can follow the head construction circle for this. Make sure that these fine lines are drawn in an outwards motion, to mimic the feather patterns on an owls face. Use similar little lines in an outwards motion around each of the eyes, and you can add as many as you like around the face to add texture and detail.

Tip: Begin drawing the outward flowing fur of the Owls face from the center line of the head at the top and split the outward motion into two directions, each side will have the fur going around in their respective directions.

You can now begin to add texture all over the rest of your owls body. Using a combination of short feathery lines, and longer ones, as well as small dots, you can create the impression of feathers. You can also draw swooping layers of feathers long the owls wings, and highlight the direction that they are lying with long, sweeping lines.

Tip: To draw realistic feathers on the wing, draw one layer of feathers at a time, think of it as waves of feathers, one on top of the next layer. Darken the outlines of the feathers.

    Constructing The Owls Talons

Most owls have four toes on each foot, one of which faces the back. As a result, you can typically only see three, which is the case in our drawing. We want this owl to be as realistic as possible, so it is important that we have the right number of talons.

We are going to begin drawing our talons from the bottom of the leg oval. You do not want to go from the bottom point of the oval, but rather just in front of it. Draw a slightly curved line that goes all the way down, just past the line of the wing oval. The bottom section of this first leg line is going to represent the middle talon for this foot. Put one more curved line on either side of this, beginning about halfway down the mainline. You can repeat this whole process for the back leg, remembering that it is further away, so the top part of the line will be much shorter.

Tip: For a realistic effect, we want to draw the owls claws according to what we want the owl to be holding onto. In our case, our owl is gripping onto a tree stump. You can capture this position by ensuring that all the talons curve outwards and then back in again slightly.

    Constructing The Owls Head

In this second step, we tackle the second biggest and arguably most important part of an owl, the head. We are going to use a circle to represent the shape of our owls head, and you need to draw this directly on top of the main body oval. The circle should be slightly smaller than half of the size of the body.

It may take a couple of tries to get this shape and placement perfect.

    Introducing The Mystical Owl

    How to draw an Owl

For most people in the modern age, owls, along with their haughty hoots, bring wonder to the world. Throughout history, owls have had a myriad of symbolism. For some African cultures they were, and still are, omens of inconvenient circumstances, like death. Others, like native American tribes, believe the owl to be a guide to the afterlife. Many others see the owl as a bad omen. The Greeks believe owls to be their protector, blessed with a divine light that enables them to see in the dark. In fact, the Greeks would have an owl fly over their troops before they fought to bring about victory.

In total, there are 216 different kinds of owl species, which can be split up into two subcategories: true owls and barn owls. True owls have big, round faces and a beautiful, speckled collection of feathers. The picture below is a true owl, specifically the barking owl.

Adding Details To Your Owls Face

This step is the first test of your freehand drawing skills. Using the construction lines we have just drawn, we are going to add the eyes and the beak to our owls face. Begin by drawing two small circles on the top horizontal line. You need the circles to be equally placed on either side of the central line. Next, using the central vertical line and the bottom horizontal line, draw a V shape to represent the owls beak. You want the V to begin just below the middle horizontal line. You can also curve your V slightly to the left as we have done, to make it a little more natural. The last step here is to add a little dot on either side of the vertical line inside the top of the V to represent the nostrils.

Hopefully you can start to see your owl taking shape!

    Direction Shape And Silhouette

You should start from the line, which will designate the direction of the bird`s body and its pose, and mark the silhouette with a simple geometric shape.

Do not neglect the line it will help to create a symmetrical drawing of an owl and the bird`s body will keep the balance. Build the shape starting from the line.

After we have located the bird on a sheet of paper, we should improve the image a bit and make the silhouette and the parts of the body clearer. Let`s improve the shape of the head, wings, tail and add legs.

Draw The Construction Lines For The Owls Head

Draw several guide/construction lines to help you establish the basic shape and major proportions of the owls head.

The first thing you want to draw is a straight vertical line. This line will help you determine the middle of your drawing area and insure that both halves of the face/head are relatively even in width.

Next draw the outer shape of the head followed by the two angled lines that will establish the horns and eyebrow feathers.

Finally draw the shape of the face which in this case is basically a set of three curves.

    Constructing The Owls Legs

Although an oval may not seem the obvious shape to use as a basis for an owls legs, it works! In this step, you need to draw a much smaller oval shape that extends out the bottom of the main body oval, overlapping slightly with the wing oval.

Owls wings are often not visible, but in the angle that we are using, they do poke out a little from under the wing.

    Detailing The Owl With Feathers

How To Draw A Realistic Baby Owl – Charcoal Tutorial

We are aware that the difference is quite vast between the example above and the example we have for this step. You do not need to be intimidated, however, because our tutorial is designed for both beginners and advanced drawers, so you will not struggle.

The feathering details added to the owl below were done with short lines that are drawn loosely.

Start with the owls face, and draw two rings of these little lines going in an outwards direction, one just next to the outline of the head and the other on the inside. These rings should be parallel to each other, with the inner ring being a bit smaller. You can then add some of the same lines around each eye and continue that pattern down towards the beak, leaving the middle almost empty. This detailing can continue past the owls beak until it blends with the two rings you made around the face.

For the next phase of feathering, you can continue with the detailing lines, but now with a mixture of long and short lines, as well as specks. These must go in a downwards direction, curving slightly with the shape of the owls body. A good suggestion would be to start at the bottom of the head, going from one side to the other, keeping with the rounded shape.

For the owls wing, bigger feathers must be added.

What do owls eyes look like? Weird but true! Owls cant move their eyeballs. Thats because owls dont have eyeballs at all. Instead, their eyes are shaped like tubes, held rigidly in place by bones called sclerotic rings.

Who eats owl? Depending on the owls habitat, size and species, foxes, snakes, squirrels, wildcats and eagles are all owl predators. Most adult, healthy owls are considered safe from most predators but injured, small species or young owls do have a higher risk from predators.

Materials For How To Draw An Owl Face

    • Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
    • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
    • BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
    • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
    • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.
