How To Draw A Realistic Rose

How to draw a rose? From Van Goghs sunflowers to OKeefes lilies, flowers have always been a popular subject for both representational and abstract artists. And its no wonder, since flowers come in so many shapes, sizes, and colors. Adding a flower painting to a homes decor instantly livens it up with a permanent bouquet.

If youve always wanted to know how to paint flowers or improve your flower drawing and painting, weve got some helpful tips. Our artist has gathered some of her favorites for creating a realistic rose painting. For her 3D rose, she used Arteza Premium Watercolor Paint, which we recommend for their vibrant colors. We also suggest watching the video before starting, to have all the tips beforehand.

Different Kinds Of Roses To Draw

As previously mentioned, there are many kinds of roses. Those long-stemmed roses you get on Valentines Day look nothing like the ones that grow on the bushes along your driveway. And even as the rose progresses through its life, it takes on many different looks. From the tiny, almost sneaky rosebud to the fluffed out and wide-open look a rose takes in its final stage, each version of the rose is worth artistic study.

Rose Drawing Easy With Pencil

Its a common misconception that you need to be skilled with a pencil to draw a rose. It is one of the more accessible flowers you can draw on paper! Im going to show you an easy way to draw a rose with a pencil. You dont need any fancy materials, just some paper and a sharpened pencil. Its effortless! Just follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Step 1: Establish your guidelines.

Flower drawings may appear complex, but they are easy to create if you break each element into simple shapes and lines. Starting with the center of a circle, draw a swirled design. You will be starting your rose head from this point. Make five equal sections on the inside of the circle by drawing light lines from the center.

Step 2: Add the details

From here, First, make a line. Now draw the letter Y in the middle of it. Inside the letter Y, add lines and circles to create shapes that look like rose petals. Roses, like other flowers, are represented in drawings by lines and circles.

Step 3: Create the petals

Petals are the final touch to your rose drawings! Draw half-moon shapes on the centerline of the Y shape. Imagine half-moons as rose petals for a more natural look. The half-moon shapes should overlap, and some should go over and under the lines of the other shapes. As soon as you are satisfied with where these shapes are placed, you can go over them with your pen to seal them.

Step 4: The finishing touch

You can add shading to your rose to give it more depth.

Rose Drawings From Simple To Fine Art Quality

Now, are you ready for a more serious drawing of a rose?

In this demonstration I am using an HB, 2B, 4B pencil, and two more items

  • a paper stump and
  • a simple kneaded eraser.

I have in front of me, but out of camera view, a painting that was done using a similar drawing as this. I show it at the end of the video.

Once I’m happy with my outline drawing, I check measurements with a tool. It’s called a proportional divider and it’s a quick and accurate way to check your drawing.

It’s discussed here, link opens in a new window so you don’t lose your place here!

I am happy with my initial sketch, so I proceed with cleaning up all my lines and beginning to do a bit of shading. I’m using a 2b pencil at this point.

So the process continues now with a 4b pencil, darkening the areas that need more shading. Sometimes cross hatching, sometimes little circles. Pressing a bit harder to get a darker line.

After going over the entire piece with my darkest pencil, I begin to use my paper stump to begin softening and blending the shaded areas. I don’t worry if I go too far into a white area because I know I have another secret weapon to fix that.

Above, I’m doing a bit of final clean up with a normal eraser. This to me is still considered a simple sketch, but it looks pretty good. The next step would use a harder, fine point pencil to get some really fine details like, dew drops, veins in the petals, a bug or two on the leaves, etc. But that’s for another lesson.

Add More Details To Your Drawing

Continue to darken the shadows on your petals by lightly rubbing the tip of your pencil in the places youve already shaded.

You can also add highlights to your drawing to create contrast against your dark shadows. Think about where light would hit the petals and then take a small eraser and erase some of the pencil marks allowing the white paper to show through. It will make your drawing appear more realistic.

Sketch The Overall Shape & Size Of The Rose

Start drawing the rose by first sketching its overall shape sizing it to your drawing area. The outer shape sketch does not need to be the exact outline trace of the rose instead you want to establish a sort of construction frame that the rose will fit into and that you will then use to draw the more detailed shape.

This step is very important so do your best to get it right. Make sure the shape is not overly long, tall, or too skewed in any direction in comparison to the rose you are drawing. If you make a mistake at this stage the rest of your drawing will be off.

7.For hatching, use a soft pencil, if necessary, remove excess lines with an eraser. Draw lines smoothly without pressing too hard on the pencil. Proceed in stages: first shade the inner rose petals with a base layer, and then continue shading outside, moving in a circle.

8. After applying the first layer of pencil, add accents with darker shading in the right places. Apply a dark shade to the rose petals where the shadows fall. This will give the rose the necessary volume and splendor.

That’s how to draw a realistic rose step by step by hatching a drawing with a graphite pencil. If desired, use acrylic markers to trace the rose bloom and give it more volume.

What Pencil To Choose & A Light Touch

It is a good idea to start with a light pencil such as a 2H or 3H. A dull pencil works best, as it glides across the paper more easily when sketching out basic shapes. Keep your movements fluid and loose throughout this process. After all, a rose is a living thing, and maintaining that idea will guide you during each step.

Have a kneaded eraser handy for adjustments.

Draw the basic outline of the bloom. It is not exactly a perfect circle. It just needs to be round. Add a guide indicating the center of the rose. My guide is a rounded out diamond shape.

This particular rose is a head-on view, meaning facing directly into the bloom.

Shading The Rose Petals And Stem

How to Draw a Realistic Rose in Coloured Pencil | Drawing Tutorial Step by Step

The rose looks very complicated because we havent added any shadows yet. In this case, I usedthe hatching method.

    1. I darkened the areas that are close to each other and where theres very little space. Like the centre.2. Now I add some shadows at the edges of the petals. Now it looks like they arent that flat anymore.

    3. I added a thin hatching layer all over the rose. Its barely visible but I think it ties everything together!4. We do the exact same for the stem. A very light layer all over it. Then, we darken the area near the edges to give the illusion its round. The rose casts a shadow on the stem as well, so we darken that area.

  • Start by drawing a cone with a circular bottom as if you are looking at the rose from an angle, so you can see the top as well as the side of the rose.
  • In the center draw petals in circular shapes as shown in the photo bellow.
  • Keep adding petals but as you near the outwards corners of the rose the petals should be rounding out more. You can see in the photos below how the petals need to look and how to layer them.
  • Outline the outer side of the body of the rose so it fits well with the petals.
  • Now it is time to draw the bulb. Keep in mind, however, that we only see a small part of it, because of the angle in which we have drawn the rose.
  • Add two vertical lines for the stem.
  • Add the leaf and add a bit of shading to add depth to your drawing.

    The Language Of Roses

Flowers as a form of communication have been used for many hundreds of years.

In the UK floriography became especially popular in Regency and Victorian times, where expressing ones feelings openly was just not the done thing to do.

With books about meanings of specific flowers freely accessible it became quite common for men to send their love interest a blossom or two, relaying secret messages.

Which came especially handy if you were not supposed to court . In that case a small flower was much less conspicuous than an open love letter. Each colour of rose has a different meaning, with pink symbolising happiness, red desire and so on.

Roses today are, of course, the ultimate symbol of love and passion. But its also quite a contrary flower, with its petals and thorns, its wild and cultivated forms.
