Building Layers Of Color

How to Draw a Realistic Rose in Coloured Pencil | Drawing Tutorial Step by Step

More colors are layered onto the rose drawing and you can use a combination of reds to do this. For example, PC924 Crimson Red is the main color and a little PC922 Poppy Red is used towards the edges.

Small circular strokes pick up the layers underneath and the surface quickly becomes solid and almost burnished. It’s surprising how quickly you can build colors using this method.

Using other colors of red, orange, or any other colordepending on the effect you’re afterhelps to keep the eye from becoming tired. It makes the colors look as rich as possible, which is what’s great about working with colored pencils.

Create A Grayscale Rose Value Reference

It can be a challenge to see values in a strongly colored subject like a rose. To give you a better idea of the subject’s tonal mapping, you can desaturate a photograph in a paint program. This eliminates the color and allows you to see it in grayscale, which is, essentially, all that tones are.

At the same time, you can also heighten the contrast and brightness to help you see how the light falls on the flower. For a warm, neutral look, a sepia filter can be added.

Consider creating several versions of the photo and use all of them as a reference while drawing. The original will give you ideas for color and shading, the grayscale is good for tone, and adjusting brightness and contrast can help with lighting. All of this is used to help form a three-dimensional mental picture from which to draw.

Roses also appear in works of art dating back many centuries. They are the among the most popular subjects in classical paintings, second only to the human form. For example, the Codex Manesse, a book of German love songs dating to around 1305 A.D., includes red roses in its illustrations.

In the year 1461, the rose became a symbol of British royalty, and its monarchs, especially queens, were often painted holding the flower. Such famous names as Pierre-August Renoir, Paul Cezanne, and Claude Monet have included images of roses in their artwork. The earliest known painting of a rose was discovered in a fresco at Knossos, Crete, dating to around 1,500 B.C.

After you work through the tutorial, youll have a whole bouquet of colorful, realistic looking roses in no time! All it takes is a little patience.

For the best results, sketch with a light hand at first. I recommend using a pencil, and going over the lines you are happiest with at the end to make them darker if you wish.

How To Draw A Rose Flower

The second method to draw a rose is to actually draw the open flower. It may be the most complicated, but here we’re going to show you an easy way to do so. If you master this method, we can move on to drawing a realistic rose.

  • Start by creating a circle in the middle of your paper, which will depict the center.
  • Create three non-regular petals in an oval shape around the first circle.
  • Now draw an irregular spiral around this row. End this spiral by joining it to one of the lines you have just drawn to give the sensation of a row of petals.
  • Draw a third and bigger irregular row, but don’t go all the way around. End it at a 90 degree angle.
  • Draw two separate petals for this next row, one at the top and another at the bottom.
  • Again, draw another spiral that goes all the way around.
  • Finish by creating the leafs and other details.

How To Draw A Rose With Color

When adding color to your artwork there are almost an endless number of options. For the rose drawing in this example I decided to use Prismacolor colored pencils.

These are by far my favorite colored pencils to use, and always have been. You can read my full review at, Prismacolor Colored Pencil Review 48 Pack.

Start by filling an area of your rose drawing with Carmine Red . Use light pressure when applying your colors to get a smooth look.

When adding color to my drawings, I tend to work on one area at a time. This is a personal preference. You can choose to work this way or color in your entire rose with the first color before moving onto the next color.

After I have my first area filled in, I go in with Crimson Red and add in some areas of shadow.

You always want to use at least two colors in each section of your drawings. If youve always used just one color in your work, you should start practicing with using more colors.

Follow the same method for your leaves. Begin with your lighter green first. And then add in some areas of shadows with the darker green. For the leaves, I used True Green , Grass Green , and Dark Green .

    How To Draw Roses

I made this quick poster to show how to do it right away, and then if you want more details, scroll below. You can see that I used different colors for each step. Pink/red was the first color: as in the first line to be done on each step, purple is next, and blue is last, the light green is what was erased at the end of the step. Beyond that, its just imagining the petals, like in step 1, and putting them together to form a flower. Whether you are doing a sideways view, or view from the top, its all about putting the petals together.

For the three roses I drew below, I used the Macro Refine Colored Pencils which I got for my birthday. They were different then the Prismacolors that I love and use all the time, but a decent cheaper option for anyone that would want to color with pencils. I also used Strathmore Bristol Paper, 11 by 14 inchesfor this drawing.

Different Kinds Of Roses To Draw

As previously mentioned, there are many kinds of roses. Those long-stemmed roses you get on Valentines Day look nothing like the ones that grow on the bushes along your driveway. And even as the rose progresses through its life, it takes on many different looks. From the tiny, almost sneaky rosebud to the fluffed out and wide-open look a rose takes in its final stage, each version of the rose is worth artistic study.

Lightly Draw A Slightly Angled Line

This line will be the stem of the rose and defines the angle of the final bloom.

Note: It looks like we drew the line pretty heavy here, but we are just making it easy to see. We will be highlighting each step to make it easier to see what changed. Make sure you sketch your lines light enough to erase!

    Drawing Leaves Stems And Hips

How To Draw A Rose step by step drawing Tutorial | Pencil Sketch

The leaves of most roses are toothed and quite waxy. That means that light will reflect off of them and water droplets form on them quite readily.

This is something you can use to your advantage for your composition. You might spray the leaves with some water or direct them towards the light source to add interest.

The leaves are usually lighter on the underside, and quite a few varieties have a very thin darker edge along the margins, often slightly reddish.

The best way to draw the leaves is to follow what you probably did as a child. Draw the little stem first on which the leaves are located, then the middle vein of the individual leaves, and only then should you start outlining the actual leaf margins and drawing the other veins, shadows and reflections.

While most roses have thorns on their stems, that is not the case for all of them. However, if they do, they can come in different colours, shapes and sizes, sometimes on the same stem.

The stems themselves are round and can be matte or shiny. They tend to have a slightly visible vertical margin, if you look closely, which is something you can use in your drawings to make it look less flat and more realistic.

The degree of woodiness depends on the age of the stem, so your average cut rose will have a flexible, succulent stem, but the shrub in your garden will also sport some older, rigid, brownish ones.

Sketch The Inner Shape Of The Rose

This stage of the drawing can be a little bit tricky as it may be hard to pick the exact petals that you want this inner shape to consist of. Try and pick the best defined shape you can. The goal is to establish some structure of the inner part of the rose so that when you draw the individual petals later it will be easier to correctly proportion them in relation to one another.

Without this step if you move on to drawing the petals individually you may find some of them to bee too big or too small.

Further Define The Form Of The Rose

Use the kneadable eraser to lighten the guidelines and use the HB-Pencil to further establish the more detailed forms of the Rose.

You can also use a regular eraser but use it carefully and go over your lines with very little pressure to ensure, that you don´t damage your paper.

You already defined the generall shapes of the rose in the step before so you only have to follow the already established lines and just add a few details to them.

Keep in mind, that you don´t have to press down too hard. It is enough that you draw the lines with the weight of the pencil itself.

    Rose Drawing Easy With Pencil

Its a common misconception that you need to be skilled with a pencil to draw a rose. It is one of the more accessible flowers you can draw on paper! Im going to show you an easy way to draw a rose with a pencil. You dont need any fancy materials, just some paper, and a sharpened pencil. Its really simple! Just follow the step-by-step instructions below.

    Step 1: Establish your guidelines.

Flower drawings may appear complex, but they are easy to create if you break each element down into simple shapes and lines. Starting with the center of a circle, draw a swirled design. You will be starting your rose head from this point. Make five equal sections on the inside of the circle by drawing light lines from the center.

    Step 2: Add the details

From here, First, make a line. Now draw the letter Y in the middle of it. Inside the letter Y, add lines and circles to create shapes that look like rose petals. Roses, like other flowers, are represented in drawings by lines and circles.

    Step 3: Create the petals

Petals are the final touch to your rose drawings! Draw half-moon shapes on the centerline of the Y shape. Imagine half-moons as rose petals for a more natural look. The half-moon shapes should overlap, and some should go over and under the lines of the other shapes. As soon as you are satisfied with where these shapes are placed, you can go over them with your pen to seal them.

    Step 4: The finishing touch

You can add shading to your rose to give it more depth.
