Step 1. Draw 2 rounded shapes for the turtle’s body, and the head. Then add 3 small circles for the turtle’s feet. We don’t add the fourth shape because it is not visible in this foreshortening.

Step 2. Outline the upper shell of the turtle based on the sketch from the previous step, round the contour line in the bottom part of the shape.

Then add the lower shell that frames the tummy.

Step 3. Outline the shape of the head. Draw the eye as in the example above. Then add the mouth and the nostrils. With simple forms, build the rough sketch of the feet.

Step 4. Erase all the unnecessary lines on which you built the drawing. Then add four claws per limb and adjust the shape of the shell.

Step 5. Draw the popular polygonal plates in the top part of the carapace. Draw the following row of scutes just beneath the initial one. And 2 more – the scutes here are smaller.

Add the plates on the lower side of the shelf with light lines. We don’t need to add too many details here.

Step 10. With s darker green pencil, add texture and shadow to the plates on the shell. This creates a 3D effect and makes the turtle look more realistic.

During the 1950s, as many as forty thousand turtles nested along the coast of Mexico, but by the 1980s, the turtles were almost extinct. Don’t Miss: How To Draw Praying Hands For Beginners

Start With An Egg Shape

We will begin the sea turtle by drawing the basic shapes of his body. This requires just a few simple lines and we’ll fill in the details in the next step.

  • Begin by drawing a tilted egg shape for the sea turtle’s body. The bottom part where his head will be should be rounded and a little larger than the top, which is slightly pointed.
  • Draw the front boomerang-shaped flippers, one on each side of where the head will be.
  • Add the two back flippers, which have an almost triangular shape. The flipper closest to you will be a little longer and larger than the back one which is mostly hidden by the shell.
  • Finish the outline by drawing the turtle’s spoon-shaped head and neck.

Outline The Sea Turtles Head And Shell

We are going to use some basic shapes to sketch the initial outline of the sea turtle. Begin with a 2B pencil and an oval shape for the head. This should be almost like an egg shape tilted on its side. Make the left side a little wider than the right. The turtles beak will be on the right.

Next, draw two lines coming from the head. This will be the sea turtles neck, which is shaped like a cylinder. Keep the lines parallel. Then connect the two lines with a curved line that follows the same curvature as where the head meets the neck.

Now, draw a wavy line for the front part of the shell on the sea turtle. Draw the first part of the line curving just over the top of the neck. Then bend the line toward the left and curve it downward again. This longer curve will be just over the turtles flipper.

Continue extending this line toward the left side of the paper. Curve the line slightly downward and then back up to form the lower edge of the turtles shell.

Now, I want the top edge of this turtles shell to be at a level a little bit higher than its head. I sketched a temporary horizontal guideline to help me with the placement. After that, its just a matter of drawing a curved line from the back of the shell to the top and back down toward the neck.

Draw another curved line from the bottom of the shell to the base of the sea turtles neck. This completes the basic shape of the turtles shell and main body. Next, we will add some flippers.

    Add Detail To Your Turtle

Your turtle is going to come to life after this step because we’re going to add a few details and give him more dimension.

  • Draw another egg shape inside the first to define the top of the turtle’s shell. Let it join up with the top edge as shown to give it a three-dimensional look.
  • To draw the shell pattern, add a row of squashed diamond shapes along the middle of the shell.
  • Add the turtle’s eye and mouth. Remember that we’re only seeing one side of his head, so only one eye is needed.
  • It’s time to finish your drawing and adding the final details is the best part.

  • Complete the shell by drawing lines that divide the outer band of the shell. These are short lines between your two egg shapes that curve slightly as you move around the shell.
  • Create the leathery texture of the turtle’s skin by drawing a random pattern of little marks here and there. Be sure to get each flipper and add just a few dots along his neck, running up to the head.
  • That’s all there is to it. You should now have an adorable, smiling sea turtle. You can add color or add a background as if he’s swimming through the ocean or leave it as is.
