Kids Can Get Creative With Different Materials And Mediums
Self portraits are a fun and creative way for kids to create their likeness using different mediums. They can be simple and one dimensional, made with just paint and paper, but the hooligans love it best when I provide them with a variety of interesting materials and art supplies to make their self portraits with.
Setting Up Your Workspace
Materials For The Half Portrait Project
- Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
- Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
- BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
- Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
- Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.

Learn How To Draw A Self Portrait For Kids That Was Inspired By A Fun New Childrens Book The King Of Kindergarten Adding A Crown Actually Makes It A Bit Easier To Do
Learning how to draw a self portrait, or any portrait, is one of those fundamental building blocks of drawing. Getting the features all in place, with some approximation of proportion, takes practice and most young artists will need some time and practice before drawing faces gets any easier for them.
Fortunately, Ive found a wonderful book that both targets young students, but adds a crown theme that I think helps the drawing process. Its called The King of Kindergarten and would make a great intro to the lesson, as a young boy learns the ropes of school life.
My tutorial asks students to draw the crown first, so they can skip the part that often stumbles them up the most, namely making a large oval. Round shapes are some of the trickiest to master when starting out, so I know only too well how many can get frustrated with this starting point.

The Significance Of Toddler Self Portraits + Our Reggio Inspired Portraits
I’ve been feeling inspired by Reggio style children’s self-portraits. The Montessori and Reggio Approach have a lot in common. Both are child-led approaches that respect and trust the child.
“Right at the heart of the Reggio Approach is the very powerful image adults have of children. Every child is seen as strong, confident and competent. Strong children have their own ideas, express opinions, make independent choices and are able to play and work well with others.
This powerful image of the child needs adults who listen to children and trust them to make responsible decisions. In the Reggio Approach listening to children involves paying careful attention to what they have to say and think, and taking their ideas seriously.
In Reggio the adults are willing to learn alongside the children. They work together in partnership rather than the adult being ‘in charge’ and having all the answers. The role of the adult is to plan starting points for the children to explore and to provide open-ended resourceswhich encourage the children to develop their own thinking and ways of learning. The adults watch and listen carefully to what the children do and say and use their observations to guide and extend each child’s learning.” – Bringing the Reggio Approach to Your Early Years Practice by Linda Thornton.
One of my favourites, drawing straight onto the mirror, using crayon pencils, but oil pastels work well too. Otto pictured here is 2 years and 11 months.

- Paper. Card stock paper that has a light gray or brown shade for an old-fashioned black and white look.
- Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
- White Pencil Crayon. Prismacolor cost a little more than the others, but they always leave the brightest color. Thats especially true for the white ones.
- Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.

Self Portraits For Kids How To
This is not a portraiture class or a college figuring drawing class. Kids portraits reflect personality in an uncanny way and we dont want that spontaneity to go away. The thought here is to give them just a few tips about proportion and placement. Some kids will follow them and apply them to their artwork immediately. Some kids will not and thats okay. Introduce the ideas and encourage kids to try them but know that they are the artist. If they dont use the information they will still absorb it and use the concepts when they are ready.

Rule #: Celebrate The Weird
Age 8
The results of successful self-portrait teaching are here. They are bizarre, they are imperfect. They are diverse. They are replacing assumptions about the commonplace with observations that are rich and yes, sometimes bizarre. They are evidence of thoughtful and unique perspectives from young artists from 5-8 years old.As your students work, encourage them by noticing the weird. I see that Hazel added lines around her eyes to show wrinkles. I noticed Jacob added bumps on his tongue to show his taste buds. I noticed Jenna has one eye bigger than the other. This tells me that you are really looking at your faces because we, as humans, are imperfect and asymmetrical. Teach them those words and more importantly teach them the value in imperfection and asymmetry.
