    How to Draw a Deer

If students can learn to see the basic core shapes of their subject matter, before they even start to draw, it will help them immensely as they continue their studies.

In this case, this young deer has a very round head, and a pill shaped body. Once those two elements are down, in a good size and relationship to each other, the rest of the drawing is much more likely to fall together. The large ears, upturned tail and thin legs are easy to add once a well-proportioned head and body are in place.

Not all animals have as clear an example of starter shapes as I think this deer has. But sticking with projects that do, when students are just figuring out how to draw, is a great way get started. The trickier subject matter can come later on, after some confidence in their skills has been established.

How To Draw A Deer Easy Tutorial

How to Draw a Deer Easy Tutorial: Deer are elegant, agile animals that are terrific additions to landscape drawings or paintings. They are also popular characters in cartoons, especially if your audience includes hunters. Heres how to draw both realistic deer and cartoon deer.

In our minds eye deer look a bit like a combination of a cow and a goat. They are almost always depicted with light flowing strokes of the pen or pencil to try to convey to the viewer how they move. Deer are exceptionally agile, and while they have a bit of a body structure like a cow, there can be no mistake about the difference between how a cow moves and how a deer moves. Cows lumber deer leap. In this sense deer are much closer to goats in how agile they are they can do the same kind of impossibly athletic moves that goats can. But even goat movements appear jerkier than deer, and goat bodies are not as sleek or as muscular as deer. These are all things you want to convey in your drawings, even if you are doing quick cartoonsketches.

The best way to draw deer, even just for cartoons, is to go out and see them in real life. Pictures are helpful, and televisions and documentary movies can be acceptable substitutes, but there is nothing like seeing a deer in real life if you truly want to capture their image and their energy on paper. That said, even a television program can show you common deer poses, and these are very helpful to make your drawings look realistic.

Add Some More Parts To The Deers Body

Were starting to build up your deer drawing nicely now! For this step, we shall be adding more to the body of the deer.

Using the lines you drew for the back and the chest of the deer, you can start to draw in the legs.

The legs are thicker at the top and then get more angular as you go down. The reference image will help you a lot with getting the shape right!

Once you have these legs drawn, simply add a curved line between them to make a belly for your deer, and then extend the chest line down as well.

Now were going to move to the legs.

Much like with the dragon image were going to outline the shape of the legs before finishing them off.

From the body line we made earlier take the large curve downward further down in that curve, but leave a little bit extended out for the tail.

Now, remember the unique knee shape of the dragon?

Similar to the deer, create a little bit of a sharp edge and then bring that edge inward.

For the back hind leg make a little line outward from the first dip in of the leg we just made, then bring it straight down!

On the front leg, were going to make a long crotchet rest symbol, and finally, a little bit away from that, under where the chin of the head is, were going to make a straight line with a little curve outward at the bottom of it.

How To Draw A Deer: Blocking In The Basic Shape

Deer stand on their toenails in an ungulagrade stance. This means that the heel and the wrist are about half way up the portion of the leg that is visible below the line of the belly. Capture the posture, proportions, and angles of the deer with light quick lines. Check your proportions and then go back and add your details. Do not rush into the detailed drawing too soon. To accurately draw a deer, details must be supported by a solid and anatomically correct structure.

In the drawings below I use a compleated drawing of the deer to show what I am moving toward in the steps. The blue lines represent my first guide lines that I would use to block in the body before drawing the details. In a real practice, the guide lines come before the detail lines.
