Now for the feet. These may seem complicated at first because they are webbed, but they are simpler than you may expect. Located at the bottom of the oval, perfectly on either side, you will start by drawing one long curved line for the foot, followed by other smaller curved lines branching off of the main line, forming the toes. If your penguins body is leaning towards the left, the curved lines for the feet should lean towards the left as well, and vice versa for the right. Adding Color To Your Penguin Drawing

When adding color to your artwork you have a lot of different choices. My medium of choice is markers. I love how bright and colorful they are.

And, theyre easy to work with and inexpensive.

The markers I am using today, and that I prefer to use most of the time, are the Bic Intensity markers. If you want to know more about why these are the markers of my choice, read Bic Intensity Marker Review Fine Point.

I began by adding color to his eyes using, Ocean View Blue and then adding Blue Skies Blue to the top part of his eyes to make them slightly darker.

His beak and feet were colored using Summer Melon and Peach Parfait.

And the greens used for his hat and scarf are, and Key Lime.

If you need some tips on using markers, you can head over to How to Blend Markers for Beginners.

The only thing left to do now is to add in a background for your penguin. I have to admit, Im not very good at adding in backgrounds to my drawings. This wasnt evident until I participated in an artist trading card swap that required every card to have a finished background.

You can read more about my experience with that ATC swap in Robot Drawing Challenge.

    How to Draw a Penguin-Easy

Step 1: Draw an egg for the body size

Baby penguins hatch out of eggs, so lets draw one as our basic body shape.

This helps us see roughly what size and shape our penguin will be. If you want to draw a penguin that takes up most of your page, make your egg about the size of the page too. If, on the other hand, you want a small penguin, make sure your egg is small!

Step 2: Define the body shape

A baby penguin isnt quite the shape of an egg, so lets add a few lines to define the body a bit more.

We split our egg shape about one third from the top by a curved line this marks the split between the body and the head of the penguin chick.

Then we tighten the half-circle that is the head a bit, as well as the bottom larger oval for the body, to define the split between the head and body the shoulders, if you will.

Step 3: Sketch in guidelines for details

Start sketching in some of the details. Here, we add wings, feet, and the markings for the head.

Baby penguins are very round and squishy. We show this by using soft curves for a lot of the drawing. This is why curves make up all the shapes we add.

The wings are like extra bumps on the body, and the feet are half-circles added at the bottom of the body.

How To Draw A Penguin Video & Step

In this free art lesson, you’ll learn how to draw a cartoon Penguin wearing a scarf.

    Following us

To draw this cartoon Penguin step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you’ll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw two small ovals for the penguin’s eyes. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. Inside each eye, draw two tiny circles to represent glare. Shade the eyes but don’t overlap the tiny glare circles. Pay attention to the space between the penguin’s eyes. Don’t draw them too close together.

Step 2: Under the eyes, add the beak by first drawing a small, angled line that’s similar to a greater-than sign . To the left, close off the shape with a small, curved line. Don’t make the penguin’s beak too big.

Step 4: Below the head, draw a long, curved, horizontal line for the top edge of the penguin’s scarf. Make a small mark below the long line to indicate the thickness of the scarf. Using the small mark as a guide, draw a line parallel to the top line for the bottom edge of the scarf.
