Putting It All Together

Now that youve learned how to draw facial features from the eyes to the mouth, its time to put everything together into a portrait. Do not do this project before you have done the proper practice work. Go back and practice all of the facial features first.

And, before moving on to this demo, be sure to practice drawing hair. I covered this topic in another post, which you can find here.

Here are some tips for drawing portraits:

  • When you want to draw facial features, start with the eyes. This helps create a connection with the viewer and starts to capture the personality of your subject.
  • When you finish the eyes, move down and finish the nose, then the mouth. This is called the triangle of features.
  • Allow the darkness of the hair to help create the lighter edge of the face. Placing tone behind the face reduces the chance of things looking outlined.
  • When drawing hair, apply your pencil strokes going in the same direction as the hair growth.
  • Always remember the five elements of shading with everything you draw.

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a female face. Go one box at a time and be very careful with the shapes.

2. Apply the Darks and Start Building up the Hair

When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the darkest tones.

3. Blend and Lift

People often call the eyes the windows to the soul. It is true, eyes are extremely an expressive feature of the face. Just eyes by themselves can tell you if a person is smiling, scared, or angry! There are many groups of muscles surrounding the eye. The eyelids can be pulled wide to show whole the iris, or area around eyes can be contracted to squint eyes and create wrinkles. The eyebrows on their own have separate groups of muscles to pull the outer and inner ends that is why eyebrows can curve up and down and create a wave shape! Additional special muscles can pull both eyebrows together above the bridge of the nose.

Observe the image above. Those are just a few examples of possible eye expressions associated with emotions. J1, J2, and J3 show expressions of joy. The eyebrow is neutral or slightly pulled up. Most importantly, the outer eye corners are squinted and elevated by the cheeks when we smile. The squint makes a real difference between an honest or faked smile.

A1, A2, and A3 are expressions of anger or disgust. The muscles above the bridge of the nose do heavy work here. They pull the eyebrows down and together, creating many wrinkles between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose.

F1, F2, and F3 express shock and fear. This is the only expression when you want to show the full iris not overlapped by eyelids. Different eyebrow shapes make wide-open eyes express different emotions, from surprised to horrified.

Creating Illustrations Focused On Expressing Emotions

How to Draw a Smiley Face

Understanding the basics gives you unlimited potential for stylizing your characters. Lets go back to the beginning of this tutorial where I showed you the basic geometrical construction. Modifying the proportions of those elements allows us to create stylized and believable faces.

Operating with simple geometric shapes also helps you to control the tilt of the head in perspective. I went for a cute character with big eyes and a round face. I increased the size of the middle box and made the half-cylinder shorter. In the next step, I draw a skull fitting those proportions and a full face on top of that.

For a genuine smile, I keep in mind to raise the eyebrows and overlap the lower lid with the cheek. Notice how the stretched mouth lifts the cheek and makes the shape appear rounder.

Movement Of The Mouth

The lips are surrounded by multiple groups of muscles, giving them an endless arrange of shapes. This allows us not only to express emotions but also let us make a variety of sounds. Below you will find just a few examples typical for expressing joy, fear, and anger. While drawing the mouth, be aware that when the teeth are separated, the chin must be lowered. The top lip can roll up and show the teeth with a delicate curve, like in smile S2 and S3, or with a more aggressive line to express anger and disgust .

Ever wondered why the corners of the mouth are suggested with a small curved line? The corner of the mouth includes a node to which a lot of muscles are attached. See the S1 diagram. The node is a spherical shape creating a small curve at the corner of the mouth.

Mouth muscles can work unsymmetrically. You can smile with just one corner of your mouth. Observe in the mirror how many faces you can make!

How To Draw The Perfect Smile

Drawing Faces, Shading

Have you ever tried drawing a portrait of someone smiling and then finding to your horror that as you drew the smiling mouth the subject of your picture transformed into a toothy monster. In this post Id like to address this problem and make it less daunting for you. Again, this comes down to shading and knowing where and where not to shade.

Dimensions Of The Face

The skull is very important for the basic construction of the face, but the real likeness of a person is in the shape of the soft tissues attached to the bone. As previously mentioned, the skull is covered by layers of muscles and fat. Some areas are quite thin so you can easily see the shape of the skull beneath it. Other regions are quite thick and will move dramatically with different facial expressions.

The green pattern on the face shows the areas where the skin is the thinnest and you can easily feel bone beneath. Those regions of the face are covered by very thin muscles and a low amount of fat, resulting in minimal changes of shape. Places like the cheeks, lips, and skin around the eyes can change shape a lot depending on the facial expression. It is worth noting that we can still observe surface changes on the green areas due to skin stretching or wrinkling.

After learning about the skull, the second most important thing to remember is how spherical the shape of the face is. The face is not a flat plane that moves in space. It is necessary to keep in mind that all features are placed on the round surface of the head.

Drawing Noses And Eyes Together

How to draw a Smiley face

Once you learn the anatomy of the eye and how to draw it realistically, it is important to understand how to put two of them together along with other facial features like the nose. Here are some guidelines to remember:

  • The space between the eyes is one eye width.
  • Both eyes should be directly across from each other.
  • If you draw a vertical line down from the corner of the eye, it will line up with the edge of the nose.
  • Both eyes must be looking in the same direction. The pupil and iris must be the same in both.
  • Place the catch light in the same place on both eyes .

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a nose and eyes together. Notice how the vertical line drawn down from the corner of the eyes lines up with the edge of the nose. Place the eyes directly across from one another.

2. Apply Dark Tones, Fill in the Shadow Areas and Eyebrows

When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the darkest tones with a pencil.

The pupils of the eyes are the darkest areas. Fill in the tones of the shadow areas and the eyebrows. The eyebrows should be shaded in as a shape first, before the hairs are applied.

3. Blend and Apply Highlights

Blend with a stump or tortillion. Very little of the paper should be left white, even in the whites of the eyes. Use a kneaded eraser for the small highlights seen in the brows and patterns within the pupils.

Color The Smiley Face

To color the smiling face make it yellow and slightly shade the inside of the mouth to be darker than the rest of the face. Simply go over the mouth with orange or brown to do this.

You can use pretty much anything you like for the coloring method such as paints, markers or colored pencils.

Once done coloring you should have a finished drawing of the smiley emoji.

Now Add A Blushing Effect

Add more emotion to your smiley face by making the cheeks appear flushed. Proceed by drawing a small sideways oval shape on each cheek to create a dramatic blushing effect.

Now that weve successfully drawn a smiley face, its time for the part youre probably most excited about, which is coloring your drawing.

As you can see in the illustration, we colored the smiley face using the same colors of an emoji. We used a vibrant yellow color for the entire face and a hint of pinkish hue for the blushing cheeks.

You can opt to color your smiley face similar to how weve done ours or you can use a unique set of colors.

We recommend doing the latter so you can have fun playing with colors and customizing your artwork!

Changing The Mouth Into A Smile

When learning how to draw a smiling face, the first modification youll need to make is to move the corners of the mouth upward and increase the amount of curvature in the line separating the two lips.

When you move the corners of the mouth up this is also going to stretch the lower lip and also reduce the amount of shadow thats showing right under the upper lip.

When you are drawing different characters its important to remember how to create a smile.

I would strongly recommend that you grab your mirror and study your own lips as you change your mouth expression from a neutral pose into a smile.

Notice how the lips stretch and flatten out the more extreme your facial expression becomes. When we say extreme in the last sentence, we mean that a smirk, or a slight grin wont have as much effect on your lips as a flashing your biggest, happiest smile.

Draw The Guide Lines For The Smile

Drawing Cartoon Facial Expressions Happy Smiling Grinning Easy Step by Step for Kids

Begin the drawing with a pair of lines, on vertical and one horizontal. The horizontal line should run through where you wish to have the middle of the smile. Its goal is to help you see if both halves of the mouth are relatively even in width.

Th horizontal line should be positioned at the level where you will add the corners of the mouth. The goal of this line is to help you make sure that the lips are not overly skewed to one side.
