How To Draw A Snowflake

Lets add some icy color to each snowflake with my favorite no mess marker method! Add bits of color here and there using washable marker. This can be a quick little dash of color here and there. There is no need to color the entire snowflake!

Here comes the fun part. Grab a soft paint brush and some water and paint over the markered areas of your snowflake drawing. Watch as the marker begin to liquify and spread just like watercolor paint. This is such a quick and easy way to add color to artwork without the fuss of paint. I use this one over and over again with kids!

The process is quick and can be done more than once with new results each time!

Cut The Top Off At An Angle

Flip your folded paper over so that you’re looking at the back. Then, cut off the top of the paper at an angle. Make sure to cut if off so that all remaining layers of paper are equal. As you can see, I’m basically cutting off all of those excess blue edges.

Cutting at an angle is what makes the points of the snowflake. Eventually, you’ll learn to cut at different angles to make snowflakes with points that are more or less sharp.

BONUS: The extra image shown in this step is from a worksheet I made for a class, which just re-explains steps 4-6 for those who may have a harder time visualizing the “fold in thirds” part. If you’ve already got the hang of it, just ignore the second picture and continue on to step 7.

The Best Supplies For Drawing Planner Doodles

There are a few supplies that I reach for all the time when I doodle.

Obviously, a pencil. I like to sketch things out lightly first. Then erase when I am sure I have it where I want it. A gum eraser works best for this. That way, you dont eat up your eraser after just a few doodles.

I have always had a set of STAEDTLER pigment liners on hand. They were almost always a required supply in art school.

How to Draw a Snowflake – Christmas Drawing Lessons

A snowflake is a rather unusual drawing object. Despite the cartoonish and simplistic style, you have to do a little bit of basic geometric shapes.

It will be most useful for your skills to draw these circles and lines without aids. Indeed, without using a ruler it will be a little more difficult and longer, however, after a few such lessons, you will notice the level up of your artistic skills.

Therefore, I suggest that you take your favorite pencils and paper, put on some nice music and try it out.

Time needed: 25 minutes.

How to Draw a Snowflake

  • Draw a circle.

This is what the base of the snowflake looks like.

Place this shape inside the path from the previous step.

This shape should be located in the very center.

  • Add the last circle.

Snowflakes form when ice crystals form around a speck of dust or other debris. As water freezes, it takes the shape of a crystal lattice, causing snowflakes to exhibit stunning geometric patterns.

It is said that no two snowflakes are exactly alike, and that is likely true in the crystal’s minutest details.

However, snowflakes can be placed in eight categories and eighty subcategories based on their basic shape. These include needle, plate, column, prism, dendrite, and rime.

The formation known as a “capped column” snowflake actually resembles the TIE fighter from the Star Wars movies!

Much of our knowledge of the snowflake’s shape can be attributed to the work of researcher Wilson Alwyn Bently, beginning in 1885. Bently photographed thousands of snowflakes using a microscope, or order to determine whether identical snowflakes could be found.

In his photographs, he never found two flakes that were just alike. It is estimated that the average snowfall contains more than 5 quintillion snowflakes – that’s 5 followed by 18 zeros.

      • BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
      • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
      • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.

      Start Your Snowflake Drawing

I love about this super simple process because the snowflake drawings are so simple yet they look so complicated and intricate. Start by cutting out a circle of plain copy weight paper. Any size will work. We started with circles about the size of a roll of masking tape.

Fold circles into eighths or fourths, if youre working with younger kids. Open circles up and trace over each fold line using a permanent black marker.

Start by adding a simple line to one section. Repeat that line all the way around or create a pattern by alternating the direction of that line in every other section as shown below. That up, down, up down pattern will result in some pretty cool star shape patterns perfect for a snowflake drawing.

Add another line and repeat the pattern all the way around. The division of the paper into equal eighths makes these intricate designs really come to life quickly and easily by providing a super easy framework. Add more and more lines.
