Interesting Facts About The Red Squirrel

Red Squirrels are a rare sight nowadays. That is for two reasons. One is the loss of their habitat, whether by human intervention or natural events. The other is because of the increasing popularity of the eastern grey squirrel. The eastern grey squirrel used to be found mainly in North America, but now it can also be found in Great Britain, Italy and Ireland, where Red Squirrels used to be more popular.

Did you know?

  • The Red Squirrel is an omnivore, which means that it eats both plants and meat.
  • The coat of the Red Squirrel changes based on the time of year and the location of the squirrel. The Red Squirrel is not always red sometimes it can be black, or shades of various other darker colors between black and red. Red-coated Red Squirrels are actually more common in Great Britain.
  • Like many other tree squirrels, the Red Squirrel has sharp claws that allow it to both climb and descend trees, branches, and even the walls of houses! Its hind legs are strong enough to allow it to jump between trees.
  • The Red Squirrel can swim!

The diet of a Red Squirrel consists mainly of nuts, fungus, berries, shoots and even sometimes bird eggs. A majority of its time spent awake is used to either hunt for food or to eat it.

An Introduction To The Squirrel

How to Draw a Squirrel – Cute – Easy Pictures to Draw

As far as we know, there are 285 different squirrel species across the world, and they can be found everywhere, except in Australia and Antarctica. From the beautiful red squirrel to the bad guy common grey, squirrels are a common sight for most of us. Whether we live in the countryside or the city, squirrels make themselves known. Squirrels are pretty awesome creatures, and they can do some incredible stunts. Not only do they have fantastic vision, but they can leap across ten times the length of their bodies.

Pictured here we have a very cute and tufty red squirrel, sitting on a small branch and munching on a nut. We are drawing a squirrel in black and white, but you are more than welcome to add color if that is what you want to do!

Draw The Largest Shapes Of The Squirrels Body

Generally the squirrels body in this position consists of shapes that are similar to ovals or eggs.

Star the squirrel drawing from the head. Draw a very basic shape of the head without any of the details. Next draw the basic shape of the body which at this point will pretty much be just two fairly smooth curves, one for the back and one for the front. Finally draw the upper part of the squirrels back leg .

Constructing The Squirrels Front Paws

This is quite a tricky step because it involves a little more freehand drawing than all of the previous stages. If you need to erase the lines and redraw them a couple of times before you are happy, that is completely fine!

Begin drawing a line that curves slightly upwards from just above the bottom point of the upper body oval. You want this line to extend until it is a little bit further than being in line with the edge of the front ear on the squirrels head. From the end of this line, draw four smaller curved lines to represent our squirrels fingers. You want the two outer fingers to curve outwards and then in again.

This little squirrels hand should look a little like a fork, take a look at our example if you need help with this!

Now comes the slightly trickier arm. Begin this arm quite a bit higher up on the upper body oval, and curve it down gently before curving it back up towards the nose. You then want to bring the line down and almost backward. Our squirrel is going to be holding a nut, so that is why we are drawing this back arm at this angle. Draw a couple of little fingers that also curve back towards the other hand.

Constructing The Squirrels Tail

At this stage of the game, it is important to remember that we are still working with the basic construction lines, which we will erase at a later stage. As such, when constructing the tail, you do not need to be particularly accurate. Using a slightly over-emphasized 2 shape, lay down the general path of your squirrels tail. You want the curved line to begin just below the halfway mark on the bottom line of the main body oval.

When we begin fleshing out our squirrel, you will use this basic line to guide your drawing of the tail on either side of the line, so remember not to draw the line too close to the body oval.

Constructing The Squirrels Ears

How to draw a squirrel EASY step by step for kids, beginners, children 5

When it comes to squirrel drawing, ovals are the name of the game. In this fourth step, we are using two much smaller, upright ovals to represent the shape and position of our squirrels ears. The positioning and size difference is very important in this step. You can see on our drawing that the ear closest to the back of the squirrels head is slightly larger, and begins lower down than the other one. The reason for this difference is that this is the ear closest to us, and it naturally appears bigger.

The bottom of the other ear is not going to be visible to us and the back ear is going to appear smaller because it is further away.

Next Draw The Tail And Legs

A squirrel wouldnt be a squirrel at all without a big, bushy tail. Before we draw that, however, we should draw the limbs of the squirrel first.

First, draw a little arm for the squirrel beneath the head. Directly below that, you can draw a rounded thigh that has a flat leg at the bottom of it.

The foot will connect directly to the back, as you can see in the reference image.

Now that the legs are drawn, you can add the iconic tail! The tail will come directly off the back of the squirrel drawing and is made of some very curvy, rounded lines.

Once you have it looking like the picture, youre ready for step 4!

We shall draw some ears and the back of your squirrel drawing in this second step. First, we shall focus on the ears.

Using the line that you drew in the previous step, carefully draw some rounded ears with some jagged lines to give them a furry look.

These will go near the top of the line that will make up the face.

Once you have the face and ears, you can start to draw the back. As you can see in the reference image, this will come down as a curvy line down from the head.

This will help to show that the squirrel is hunched over.
