For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw an oval as a guide for the squirrel’s body. The oval doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide.
Step 2: Draw a shape similar to an egg on top of the guide for the squirrel’s head. Draw a curved line inside the egg to help you place the facial features later.

We take you through the most basic steps first and then guide you through adding details and shading to bring your squirrel to life.
How To Draw A Red Squirrel
Another way for kids to tell how easy it is to draw a squirrel. Gradually following all the recommendations, you can get an adorable and cheerful animal with a nut in its paws. Rather simple lines and the absence of elaborate detail will appeal to less experienced artists.Prepares the main image, consisting of a picture of a rather large head and a small body.
Next, add the front and hind legs, which are closer to the observer. The tail is drawn.
The proposed version of the image of the head is maximally simplified: two small ears on top, one eye on the visible side, a spout and a smiling mouth.
At the very end, pairs of paws are added, and a nutlet is drawn in the front ones. The finished image can be filled with color.

Drawing A Squirrel: Step 3
The next step is to start to build up the texture of the squirrel’s fur.
Note: All the lines and marks you draw should follow the natural direction of the bristles as this will help you to establish the form and texture of the animal. Short stippled marks are used for the fur on the squirrel’s body while longer strokes of the pen are used to suggest its bushy tail.
Constructing The Eyes And Nose
This next section is dedicated to the construction of the eyes and the nose. This time, we will be drawing circles, not ovals! The first circle will go right in the middle of the heads oval, and this is for the eye. The second circle, for the nose, will go across the narrow part of the heads oval, on the right. Hopefully, you will begin to see a squirrel resemblance starting to appear in your collection of ovals and circles.

Fleshing Out The Body Of Our Squirrel With Fine Lines
Now that we have the general shape and features in construction lines, it is time to flesh them out and outline the final shape of our squirrel.
Tip: If you take a look at our example, you will see that we have not used a solid connected line to outline our squirrel. Instead, because the squirrel has fur, we have used many small strokes of fur in the direction that we are drawing. For example, from the head all the outline fur will be directed towards the left and curve down/ smoothen down around the back of the squirrel, while from the arm to the bottom of the squirrel the fur will again be drawn going outwards.
It is easiest to begin outlining our final shape at the forehead. You can follow the top curve of the head oval pretty closely, remembering to shape the ears as you go. To achieve the right perspective, draw the headline below the back ear, and bring the front curved line of the front ear slightly down into the head. Use the same method to define the nose and eyes, with a short and sharp streak line underneath the nose to create your squirrels mouth. You can add a few small fur strokes on the underside of the head oval to provide definition from the rest of the body.
If you need some visual guidance, refer to our example here.
Drawing A Squirrel: Step 4
The penultimate step in our squirrel drawing is to concentrate on strengthening the darker tones and texture of its fur.
Note: Still following the natural direction of the bristles, denser concentrations of stipples and strokes are built up to convey the deeper areas of tone. The range of tones should vary from dark sections of heavily hatched strokes and stipples to light patches of paper that are hardly marked. The texture of the squirrel’s fur naturally follows as a by-product of this stippling and hatching pen technique. The dark shiny eye was also added at this stage by hatching lines until they formed a dense black tone but carefully leaving areas of untouched highlights to suggest its reflective surface.

We shall add some more details to your drawing in this step of our guide on how to draw a squirrel. First of all, use a jagged line at the chest to create some fluffy fur there.
Then, use some more jagged lines lower down to create a fluffy belly for your squirrel, and then you can draw in the other legs and arms to complete this step.
Finish Off Your Squirrel Drawing With Some Color
The last step of our guide on how to draw a squirrel is the one where you can take over and show us how creative with colors you can be!
We used a brown color scheme for our squirrel, but you should use whichever colors you would like for your own squirrel drawing.
Squirrels come in many different color variations, so even if you would like to keep your drawing more realistic you have a lot of options at your disposal.
However, you could also use your favorite bright colors as well for a more stylistic appearance to your squirrel!
Once you know which colors you would like for your drawing, the only thing left to decide is which art mediums you will use for it.
Whether you decide on brighter colors using some acrylic paints or colored pens, or more muted tones with something like watercolors or colored pencils, youll have some amazing colors for your squirrel!

Constructing The Squirrels Ears
The ears of the squirrel are some of the smaller parts of its body. The ears will also use a construction oval, one for each. These ovals will be vertical in orientation, with the first one crossing over the heads oval at its halfway point. The second oval for the ear that is further back must be just a tiny bit smaller than the first ear in the front, and it should only cross over the heads oval one-quarter of the way, as this adds depth.
Note that the bottom half of the construction ovals will not be visible once you draw on the detailing.
How To Draw A Squirrel With Pen And Ink
This step by step art lesson demonstrates the technique used to create a pen and ink drawing of a squirrel.
Our lesson on ‘how to draw a squirrel’ is a step by step demonstration of the pen and ink techniques used to create our squirrel drawing. Pen and ink is a very good medium for rendering the bristly texture of fur and ideally suited to this subject.

Adding The Outline Of The Squirrel
We have finally finished the section for construction lines and we can start moving on to the shape and form of your squirrel the fun part! What may be tough, in case you have not noticed yet, is the fact that the squirrel is entirely covered in fluffy fur.
We have replicated this by avoiding the use of solid lines to form its outline, but sketching lines instead. Use very small, short strokes to mimic the appearance of the fur.
When you get to the fluffy tail, you must use longer sketching lines to get it looking full and busy, ensuring that most of them must run perpendicular to the tails curvy construction line. When you get to the top of the tail, to where it is bent, the sketching lines should start facing upwards and then gradually start to point downwards, crossing over the end of the construction lines curve. If you draw the sketching lines going around the construction line, on the outside, you will be left with a disproportionate tail.
The detailing for the eye is like that of a teardrop with its pointed end angled towards the squirrels nose. The squirrels ears should not have the bottom half of the construction oval drawn in. The front ear will start from just below the top of the squirrels head and the second ear at the back will start right from the top of the head. The ear in the front is facing forwards, which means more detail is necessary. You must draw a line on the inside of the ear on the right-hand side, running parallel to the ears shape.
Drawing A Squirrel: Step 5
Finally, a simplified background of three bold areas of tone was applied to highlight the visual elements in our drawing.
The black area at the top, which was painted with ink, illuminates the shape of the squirrel’s head and tail creating a light image against a dark background.
The central white area, which is untouched paper, emphasizes the texture of the squirrel’s fur and creates a counterchange with the top of the drawing: a dark image against a light background.
The lower grey rectangle that supports the squirrel forms a geometric counterbalance to the serpentine curves of the animal, while its flat cross-hatched tone is a welcome contrast to the stippled texture of the squirrels fur.

You Can Refer To The Simple Step
Start by drawing an oval to outline the squirrels head.
Below the oval, outline the jaw using a series of curves. Allows the lines to meet at jagged points, forming the shape of the fur.
Connect the jaw to an oval using a short, curved line. Line the upper part of the jaw with an M shaped circle.
Sketch the squirrels body using a long and curved line. Continue with a series of connected serrated curves at the bottom.
Stretch a short and curvy line from the top to form the neck. Continue with a long and curved line to form the arm. Draw a series of curves parallel to this line, forming the opposite side of the arm.
Using a series of curves, joined together at jagged points, roughly surround a circle at the bottom of the shape. This forms the squirrels hip. Draw a curve for the back, connecting the arms to the hips.
Draw a curve to indicate the hip on the opposite side, allowing for a bit of jagged hair on the bottom.
Draw a bun on top of the head using a series of long and short curves, allowing the lines to join into sharp points.
Draw the ears by stretching out a set of curves on each side of the hair. Allows lines to meet at rounded points.
Erase the guides from the ears and hair.
Remove instruction lines from acorn.
Draw a curve above each eye to indicate the eyebrows. Loop each foot using a series of curves, so that the lines overlap and form the toes.

Do Peanuts Kill Squirrels
Its not that sunflower seeds and peanuts are incredibly harmful to squirrels its just that they have very low nutritional value. Raw peanuts can be especially dangerous because they can harbor toxic mold. Its important for squirrels to consume a balanced mixture of nuts, seeds, corn, fruit, leaves, fungi and bark.
Constructing The Squirrels Front Paws
This is quite a tricky step because it involves a little more freehand drawing than all of the previous stages. If you need to erase the lines and redraw them a couple of times before you are happy, that is completely fine!
Begin drawing a line that curves slightly upwards from just above the bottom point of the upper body oval. You want this line to extend until it is a little bit further than being in line with the edge of the front ear on the squirrels head. From the end of this line, draw four smaller curved lines to represent our squirrels fingers. You want the two outer fingers to curve outwards and then in again.
This little squirrels hand should look a little like a fork, take a look at our example if you need help with this!
Now comes the slightly trickier arm. Begin this arm quite a bit higher up on the upper body oval, and curve it down gently before curving it back up towards the nose. You then want to bring the line down and almost backward. Our squirrel is going to be holding a nut, so that is why we are drawing this back arm at this angle. Draw a couple of little fingers that also curve back towards the other hand.
