The Pencil tool, the Paint Brush tool, the Eraser, the Airbrush tool, the Clone tool, the Blur tool, the Smudge tool, and the Dodge tool. If youâre confused about what those tool icons look like, theyâre the ones shown here on the left, inside the pink boxes.

How Can I Draw An Arrow On A Picture
The easiest way to draw an arrow on a picture in a few steps is to use the GIMP free image manipulation program.
Open your image in the GIMP program, select a painting tool, click where the arrow should start, hold SHIFT and click where the arrow should point. Then repeat the operation for the two other lines of the arrow.
That way, you can draw an arrow on a picture in a few seconds and easily personalize it to meet your image needs.

A Gimp Textured Background Example
As one quick example of an image with a textured background and black, chalky lines, here’s an image I created as an exercise today:
You may not be able to see it in this small image, but in the larger image â and more importantly the printed image â you can see the textured background as desired.
Ms Paint Functions With Photoshop Power
GIMP is a highly powerful and complex tool, very similar to Photoshop, and in some ways better. Not only is it completely free of charge, being open source, it is available for Windows and Linux operating systems as well. Even better is the fact that dozens of independent enthusiasts are constantly working to make GIMP better, while hundreds others design scripts and plugins to make the GIMP experience even more powerful.
But, if youâre a user new to GIMP, you might be missing some of the familiar tools from the far less sophisticated image software out there – like Microsoft Paint. Even that antiquated and elementary program has the ability to make straight lines from point A to point B, but GIMP doesnât appear to have that functionality at allâ¦â¦ or does it?

Ive been using Gimp for a long time, and had no idea how to create a large Gimp brush size like this until;I;stumbled on this feature by accident today.
Other Gimp Textured Background Approaches
There are many other textured background approaches you can take with Gimp, including using the Gimpressionist tool :
- Weave was an excellent choice for what I needed today
For each of these, make sure you click Apply, then Update in the Preview area to save yourself some time. Also make sure you press Reset, unless you want to combine effects.
You can also combine these effects with Paper and Brush settings:
- Weave preset plus Marble paper was also very good
- Weave preset plus Burlap paper was also very good
- Canvas paper plus a Sponge01 brush was excellent
Be sure to adjust the Scale and Relief settings to see how those work.

Install Gimp Script On Windows
First, open your GIMP and go to Edit -> Preferences. In the window that opens, on the left pane, go to Folders -> Scripts. On the right pane, you will find the folder path where you need to place the .scm file from step 2.
Next, open Windows Explorer and go to the GIMP script location that you found above. In my case, it is located at C:Program FilesGIMP 2sharegimp2.0scripts. Copy-paste the arrow.scm file in the scripts folder. Relaunch GIMP.
Solved Re: How To Draw A Line :
thanks, yes, It’s behaving now.
It takes a mouse click to indicate the starting point, and ashift-click to indicate the end. Holding shift in advance of the finalclick shows you where it will draw. Makes perfect sense now, but I wasso expecting it to be a drag operation to draw the line that I couldn’t see the wood for the trees.
Thanks all, especially Marco for such prompt and persistent help.
Now I can just quietly put it behind me and slowly stop feeling reallydumb!

Create A Cartoon Sketch Of Yourself
There are a lot of ways to use Gimp to create a cartoon from a photograph of yourself or anyone else, but the approach I prefer is:
With this technique you’re creating a sketch of yourself on the transparent layer. You’ll also want to create a plain white layer, and put it between your photo and your transparent layer. You can then enable the white layer to see what you’ve sketched, and disable the white layer to see your lines sketched over your photo.
Some people may not like that approach because it’s a manual process, but I’ve created several excellent sketches of relatives this way, and they keep asking me for more.
Add Arrows Using Plugin
Apart from the above method, you were previously able to head to the plugin site and download a script that could handle all your arrow-based needs without an issue. However, that method no longer exists.
Thankfully, the original plugin is still available at other sources. Its a very useful plugin, so its worth hunting down to solve your arrow-based problems. Here are the steps to download and use the arrow plugin in GIMP:
1. Open;the forum post;that has the file. Fortunately, they keep on updating it as well. Download the script file from the link. That will download the ZIP file on your computer. Extract the downloaded file.
2. You will find an arrow.scm file in the extracted folder. Thats the file you need.

Create A Textured Background With Clothify
You can use the Gimp Clothify artistic setting to create a textured background:
This tends to give your background a little bit of a “leather” feel to it and make it a little darker. I’ve only tried this with a few colors, so I imagine these settings will have to change a lot for different colors.

Because if you dont know, you might quickly wonder how to draw a straight line in Gimp without any tools at all. The function is directly active with only one shortcut and thus allows to work with it without much ado. We would like to explain to you how this works.

Straight Lines Using Paths
If you want a bit more control over your final result, you can use the Paths tool to plan out your line in advance. Despite what you might expect from other programs, the Paths tool doesnt let you draw vector shapes, exactly, but you can use the paths it creates to draw a series of connected lines all at once. Heres how to do it:
Step 1: Select the Paths tool from the toolbox or press the keyboard shortcut B.
Im not sure what the Paths tool icon is supposed to be do any of you have any ideas?
Step 2: In the Tool Options panel, check to make sure that the Edit Mode is set to Design, or you wont be able to draw any new points for your path.
Be sure your Edit Mode is set to Design
Step 3: Click on your image to set the first point of your line, and then repeat until youve drawn out the exact path you want.
Step 4: Select the Stroke Path button in the Tool Options panel, and GIMP will display the Stroke Path options dialog box shown below.
The Stroke Path dialog box in GIMP 2.10
At this point, youve obviously got few options. You can tell GIMP to use the Stroke line function the way it does by default, or you can tell it to Stroke with a paint tool which gives you all the capabilities of the quick Shift key method I described earlier in the post.
If you choose Stroke line, you can set the Line width as well as a whole slew of other options by expanding the Line Style section.;

How To Draw A Dotted Line In Gimp
If you think creatively, you can often use existing tools in useful new ways. The free GNU Image Manipulation Program has a Paths tool that assists with drawing shapes. You can also use it to draw lines between two points on an image. Regular lines are fine, but an occasional dotted line can add visual interest to a design. Discover GIMPs dialog boxes that contain the line fill patterns, and you can click a few buttons to convert an ordinary line into one that contains dots.
Open an image in GIMP, and click the “Paths” tool to select it. This tool sits next to the tool that looks like an eyedropper. If you have trouble finding the Paths tool, hold your cursor over different tools and note the name that appears in the pop-up tooltip.
- Press “Ctrl-B” to open the toolbox if you don’t see it when you launch GIMP.
- A handle appears on each end of your line after you draw it. Click a handle and drag it up or down if you’d like to change the line’s direction. You’ll find this trick useful when you want to create lines that move at an angle.
So Simple They Forgot To Make It Obvious
Iâm not going to lie – I used GIMP for a very long time without ever knowing how to make straight lines easily. The fact is though, that not only does GIMP have the ability to make straight lines, it has the ability to use these straight lines with many of itâs complex tools.
It would make sense for one to be able to make a straight line using a the basic paint brush tool, so letâs start with it.
This simple image was made entirely with the GIMP paint tool and the straight line modifier. How?
Step 1: Select the Paint Brush tool. Make a single mark on the canvas – this will be the starting point of your first line.
Step 2: Hold down the shift key and move the cursor around the canvas. You will see the âghostâ image of where the line will go. Click anywhere on the page to create the line from our starting point to there.
Thatâs the only trick to it! The all-powerful shift key. The line will mimic the size, opacity, and shape of whichever brush you choose, so you wonât end up with awkward circles with lines connecting them.

Creating a dotted or dashed line with GIMP is easy with the Paths Tool. In the Stroke Path Dialog window, you can adjust the lines style via the Line Style option. Its located just below the Line Width setting. Click on Line Style to expand the styling options.
- Capt Style: this option sets how the endpoint of your line looks – Butt, Round, or Square.
- Join Style: if you’re creating multiple lines at different angles, this will style how they are joined – Miter, Round, or Bevel.

How To Create A Curved Line With Gimp
A straight line is cool. But a curved line is more fun!
Creating a curved line with GIMP is accomplished with the Paths Tool. Making a curved line involves adding two anchor points as before. This time, though, click and drag your mouse while holding down the mouse button for the second endpoint. As you do, the path will begin to bend!
After releasing your mouse button, youll be left with two handles. One can be used for rebending the curve if needed. The other handle works as a guide to create a straight line . Once your curve is perfected, stroke it as you did before.

Is Gimp As Good As Photoshop
While not quite as advanced as Photoshop , GIMP isnt just bare bones photo editing, either. It still offers layers, curves, filters, and many more tools that go well beyond basic. But as the industry standard with a dedicated company making frequent updates, Photoshop is certainly the more powerful program.
