## Benefits Of Using A Tape Diagram

The advantage of the tape diagram is the students won’t memorize concepts they don’t understand. The tape diagram is used to effectively solve a mathematical word problem involving –

- Model ratios when the units are similar in both quantities
- Discuss more complex comparison problems
- Three items ratio
- Two different ratios are compared
- Complex word problems

## How Do You Solve A Tape Diagram

To solve problems using tape diagrams, students must first ask, “Do I know the whole amount?” If it’s supplied by the problem, fill it in. If not, put a question mark at the bottom of the diagram. Then look for other information and fill that in. The question mark always represents whatever piece of information is missing.

Here is an example of how I use it for division problems:

Students will quickly begin to see a pattern… the bottom number is always the product of the top two numbers.

Therein lies the beauty of this model:

It is self-correcting. If the top two numbers, when multiplied, do not equal the bottom, you’ve done something wrong.

When teaching with this model, it’s a good idea to have students write all four possible equations. So in the above example, we would also write ? x 4 = 32 and 32 ÷ ? = 4. This is important because it reinforces the concept of inverse operations and fact families. It also gives students a tool to use when the encounter problems with a missing factor or divisor.

Once my students are able to interpret story problems and solve using tape diagrams, I teach them to analyze a tape diagram and write their own story problems to go with it. This requires high-order thinking and really develops their mathematical minds.

## Uses Of Tape Diagrams

A tape diagram at its core is a simplistic approach to a complicated mathematical problem. It is commonly used by teachers to help teach their students better. The diagram aids teachers by allowing them to introduce the element of fun to learning. Meanwhile, tape diagrams make it easier for students to struggle with mathematical problems to find out what calculations are necessary to solve word problems. What’s more, tape diagrams can also be used to provide better and efficient learning environments where students can learn different approaches to complex problems. In particular, they are easy for the modeling of mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and proportions.

## How To Use Tape Diagrams

To use tape diagrams with your students, I suggest following this instructional sequence…

Teacher supplies the story problem, draws the tape diagram, and models how to solve.

Teacher supplies the story problem, draws the tape diagram, and students help solve.

Teacher supplies the story problem, students help draw the diagram, and students solve on their own.

Teacher supplies the story problem, students draw and solve alone.

Teacher draws a tape diagram and students create a story problem to go with it.

Along the way, you’ll want to move from including one equation that represents the problem to showing all four possible equations. This process, from introduction to proficiency, might take several weeks depending on the skills of your students. But it will pay off in the long run when your students become experts at solving story problems!

A tape diagram is a pictorial model students can draw to represent a mathematical relationship or to develop understanding of a math concept. Tape diagrams are useful for solving many different types of math problems but are commonly used with word problems. Students can use a tape diagram to organize information and communicate their mathematical thinking.

**Start with tape diagrams early.**

*Eureka Math*® introduces tape diagrams as early as Grade 1 with addition and subtraction to reinforce the partwhole relationship. The use of tape diagrams supports students transition from concrete models to representational and symbolic models. The following Grade 1 example shows how to introduce students to using tape diagrams. Students can likely represent 6 + 7 by drawing dots. When you draw rectangles around the dots representing the addends and indicate the sum with a question mark, youve made a tape diagram that reinforces the partwhole nature of the quantities. Students begin to realize how the two parts come together to make a wholethe box gathers all the dots into one group they do not appear simply as 13 discrete objects. This activity lays the foundation for the Grade 2 example, in which they start to explore equal parts. Once students know how to draw tape diagrams, they can use them to make sense of many mathematical relationships.

## How To Use Tape Diagrams To Solve Problem

Using this visual model students can easily solve mathematical problems as it provides a bird’s eye perspective to comparative mathematical equations. When presented with a problem to students you can follow the simple steps listed below –

- Based on the given problem, a horizontal rectangle is drawn and cut into sections
- These sections represent groups of numbers in the mathematical problem
- This helps students get a visual look at the problem and helps them easily solve it
- Then students can perform the mathematical operation as defined in the problem

## Tape Diagrams In Math: A Problem Solving Strategy

I have always encouraged my students to model, model, model when solving word problems. Modeling is a way for students to make sense of a problem and catch mistakes before they happen. Sometimes, what seems like a good answer just doesn’t work out once it’s drawn as a model.

Until recently, I really didn’t care what kind of model my kids used. Drawings, tally marks, symbols: anything was fair game. But as we’ve worked our way through multiplication and into division, I’ve found myself returning over and over again to the tape diagram. It’s a nearly fail-proof way to work through a story problem and my students have become problem solving masters!

## Example Of Tape Diagram

The above example, ratio comparison of how much money individuals have made is represented. Tom has two boxes Jimmy has three and whereas Susan has 5 boxes. The total is $1200. That is denoted by brackets encompassing the tape diagram. Each box/rectangle is $120.

The tape diagram provides an easy way to calculate the mathematical problem. It is visible the amount of money each individual has made. Tape diagrams are ideal for these calculations. This way the ratio can be calculated, effectively.

## What Is A Tape Diagram

A tape diagram is a rectangular drawing that appears like a tape piece with divisions to support mathematical calculations. It is a graphic tool used commonly in solving ratio-based mathematical word problems.

Tape diagrams are visual representations that represent the sections of a ratio by using rectangles. As they are a visual model it takes attention to detail to draw them. They break down complex mathematical word problems and help simplify it. They are depicted in the form of a strip or as a piece of tape. Tape diagrams are also commonly called a bar model, a length model, a strip diagram, or a fraction strip.

## So What Exactly Is A Tape Diagram

A tape diagram is a drawing that looks like a segment of tape, used to illustrate number relationships. Also known as a strip diagram, bar model, fraction strip, or length model.”

In practice, a tape diagram in math looks like this…

Tape diagrams have become my go-to model when teaching math. They work for any type of word problem, but I especially love them for solving multiplication and division.

**A free-body diagram is a visual representation of an object and all of the external forces acting on it, so to draw one you’ll have to have this information calculated.** They are very important for working in engineering or physics problem solving since drawing them helps you to understand what is going on in a problem. A free-body diagram can be drawn very simply, with squares and arrows, or you can make it much more complex. The only requirement is that you or someone else looking at it should be able to understand what the diagram is telling.

A free-body diagram is a representation of a certain object showing all of the external forces that acts on it. FBDs are very helpful in engineering and physics problem solving.
