Step 1: Sketch some circles for the head and face

We will start our tiger drawing very similar to our circle cat from the How to draw a cat tutorial.

First draw a large circle for the head.

Next add a tiny circle for the nose, with two slightly larger circles for the cheeks.

Step 2: Sketch the tigers body and front legs

Since tigers are sleek, rather than round, we cannot continue with the circles for the body.

Rather we sketch the body as two simple, slightly curved lines combined with the round head, the body makes a bowling pin shape.

Next draw similarly curved lines inside the body for the front legs.

Step 3: Draw the tigers paws and rear legs

Next we add paws and rear legs.

Start with a straight line for the floor that will help us keep all the paws in line.

Add two half circle paws at the end of front legs.

Next add two more rear paws, each again a half circle, but slightly hidden behind the front paws.

Finally, sketch the rear legs with two curved lines to suggest a sitting tiger.

Step 4: Sketch the eyes and nose

Now that we have the tigers body sketched, we will improve on the face.

First, lets add the eyes. Here we have drawn two exaggerated narrow tiger eyes.

Next we improve on the tigers nose. Draw two ovals in a upside down V or heart shape from our nose dot.

Step 5: Add ears and small mane

Complete the sketch of the tigers head with ears and a mane.

Draw the pointy, slightly curved ears. Add an extra line on the inside to suggest the ear cup.

Draw Lines For The Front Legs

Now, its time to create the lines which will represent the shape of the legs. Each of these composition lines have a slight slope, a flat line at the bottom and a small kink in the middle.;

We will start by drawing the tigers left front leg. Start at the top of the small left circle , and then lightly sketch a line going down.;

Just below the bottom of the small circle, draw a small loop. This kink in the line will provide the leg with a more realistic shape. Continue the line going downwards, until it reaches the bottom line of the guidelines . Finally, add a rough couple of lines to represent the foot.;

For the second leg line repeat the same process, but as a mirror image of the other front leg. So, this line will start in the right small circle, and continue downwards. Take note, you should draw the foot for the right front leg at the higher line on the guidelines from the last step.

Consult the image below if youre not sure how this should look.

How To Draw Cartoon Tigers

Whenever I think “cartoon tigers”, its Tigger from Winnie the Pooh, Tony the Tiger of Frosted Flakes, and of course Shere Khan from Disneys The Jungle Book that come to mind.

Here though you get to create a tiger of your very own one based on a very simple guideline, drawn from top to bottom. Actually, this lesson is very similar to the Cartoon Lion lesson from previous.

Whats great about this lesson, is that because tigers have such distinct markings when youre finished your drawing, making your tiger look like a tiger with a bit of color, is easily done.

Oh and remember too this lesson does follow a specific sequence. But with each step along the way to completion, dont be afraid to change your lines as you see fit.

OK! Lets draw a tiger!

Sketch Guidelines For The Legs

The guidelines in this step will help you to get the right shape and positioning of your tiger. They need to be accurate, so we would definitely recommend that you use a ruler for these lines.;

The first line starts at the centre of the thin long oval. From that point, draw a long, straight line through the oval and into the space beneath the bottom of the body.;This should be quite a long line, as it will be used to create the tigers front left leg.

Next, draw a horizontal line towards the left starting from the bottom of your vertical line. The lengh of your horizontal line should be about half the length of the vertical line.

Now we will do something similar for the front legs . Draw a line that goes through the right oval and passes through the left hand side of the right small circle. The line should go through the point where the right small circle intersects with the tigers torso. Continue this line until it reaches the same point as the guidlines for the left leg.;

Now add two horizontal lines. The first line should be positioned at the same point as the horizontal line at the bottom of the last vertical line. The second line should be slightly longer, and be positioned underneath the other horizontal line.

If you would like a bit of guidance on how these lines should look, check out the image below.

How To Draw A Tiger With A Pencil

Lets draw a tiger with a pencil in motion. We draw familiar circles, but arrange them differently: in the foreground, there is a small head, then a powerful withers, the last one is the sacrum. When drawing the head in a three-quarter turn, we remember its rounded shape, the volume, but not the longbow.We depict the front paws. One of them is gently on the ground, the second with a brush picked up in motion.From the withers we draw a slightly rounded back, smoothly transferring the line to the tail. From the front paws, we carry the edge of the abdomen, draw the hind legs gently standing next to each other.We remove unnecessary lines of outline, leave a clean shape of the animal, proceed to the elaboration of small details: whiskers, contours of wool, stripes. With a soft pencil, we denote all the contours of the body, features, and lines.

Add The Final Details

How to draw a realistic Tiger Face

This is the point where your tiger really comes to life. In this final step we will be adding the tiger stripes. As we add the stripes, we will start by drawing the thinner stripes on the tigers body. These should extend across the tigers back and onto its legs.

Each stripe should curve along the shape of the tigers body. The stripes should be slightly wavy and all have their own distinct shape as illustrated below.

Notice how each stripe starts as a thin point and gradually gets thicker. It then returns to a thin point at the end of the stripe.

Now, we will be moving on to the thicker stripes as illustrated below. You can achieve this effect by using a similar technique as the one we used for the smaller stripes.

The key difference here is that you will be using a heavier layer of shading to draw this next layer of stripes.

To finish this step, add some little spots of fur across the tigers chest, legs, tail and body. You can do this by lightly sketching little lines in between the stripes, at different points across your tiger.
