How To Draw Water With Colored Pencils
- Select a range of different shades of blue and green. Prismacolors are ideal for applying color
- The advantage of using color pencils is that they can be built up in layers.
- Begin by applying the light layer of horizontal color across the page, remember that you will shade with bright color and then apply darker shades of blue over the first layer.
- Take a darker shade of tone and begin to apply color pencil to the horizon remembering that this will be the most shaded area on the page.
- When holding the pencils shade at an angle and progressively built up
- Remember that if the reflections of the sun and clouds will need to be rendered on the paper.
- Continue to build up dark shades of blue using short horizontal strokes of color.
- Use a good quality vinyl eraser to lift some of the pigment off the surface of the page. When doing this, you need to use a curved motion to depict the movement of the waves in the ocean.
- Progress onto applying darker green onto the background area of the horizon, again remember to use the pencil at an angle.
- Next, to increase the contrast of different shade of blue and green, take a dark blue shadow and apply tone to the horizon and add definition to the white spaces created by the eraser.
- Finally, use a white color pencil to blend white into the blank spaces and layers over the different shades of blue and green.
How To Draw A Boat:
Step 1: Draw a straight line at the beginning of the drawing followed by a curved line at the end of it.
Step 2: Draw other slant lines on the other side of the line and double the first curved line drawn. Also, draw a line in the base of the boat.
Step 3: From the one point of the boat draw a curve line meeting the other point. Draw the base also little curvy.
Step 4: On the base of the boat draw a rectangular shape with parallel lines.
Step 5: In the rectangle draw horizontal lines with paired lines. Draw parallel lines on the sides also.
Step 6: Give some more detailing to the boat using straight and curved lines.
Step 7: On the front wall of the boat draw curved lines parallel to its wall. Draw the same pattern inside also.
Step 8: Now your outline is ready you can contour it to vary its darkness and depthness.
Step 9: Erase all the messy and unnecessary lines to get a clear image of the boat.
How To Draw Falling Water And Forming Splash:
Step 1: Draw 2 ovals overlapping each other and random small lines above that.
Step 2: Convert the lines in water droplets as delineated below and draw many more circles inside it.
Step 3: In the middle of the circle draw a drop coming out from it and draw small lines around the circle.
Step 4: Shade the drawing using the hatching technique, shade darker on the outer circle.
Step 1: Mark Theborders Of The Drawing
Ive found over the years that the best way to get a more accurate line drawing is to first take a minute or two to define the picture plain You dont need fancy tools to do this.
Two Ways to Mark Borders
A precut mat of the right size is an ideal tool for marking borders.
This is one of my precut mats. I have various sizes so I marked each one with the size of the opening so I could tell at a glance what size Im looking at. Beats measuring them every time!
I lay the mat over the drawing paper and lightly draw along the inside edges. The result looks like this. Not very fancy, I admit, but this is just a line drawing after all!
If you prefer to draw directly on your drawing paperwhich I do for landscapesmeasure the picture plane on your drawing paper, then draw the borders more carefully. Or tape the paper to a back board so the tape marks the border, then proceed with the next steps.
Various Types Of Waves
Peak. Before drawing the peak of the wave itself, it is advisable to draw its lateral parts, creating mirror reflection each other. And only after that depict the top of the wave.
Variations. Wave variations can be quite varied. They can be huge and powerful, like a freight train, or small and thin as paper.
Choose Your Medium You Want To Draw With
The illustration of water or light and shadows cast onto the surface of the water can be illustrated in many different artistic mediums.
Select materials that you are familiar with and use to working with. Read my post about the Artists Basic Equipment List.
Graphite and charcoal pencils are an excellent choice as you will be able to produce immediate marks on the paper. They will also enable you to create different sizes and types of marks quickly. Conveying distance and the angle and spacing between the waves can easily be achieved with graphite and charcoal.
Ink and water is another suitable material which will let you drawing waves quickly and immediately. Creating the rhythm and fluidity of the surface of a stream or lake can be formed using inks diluted with water.
How To Draw A Lighthouse

Lighthouses andbeacons are towers with bright lights and fog horns located at important or dangerous locations. They can be seen on rocky cliffs or sandy shoals on land, on wave-swept reefs in the sea, and at entrances to harbors and bays. They serve to give warnings to mariners of dangerous shallows and perilous rocky coasts, and they help and guide vessels safely into and out of harbors. The messages of these long-trusted aids to navigation are simple: either STAY AWAY, DANGER, BEWARE! or COME THIS WAY!
How To Draw Ocean Water
This is the type of wave that can be found on the coastline or with a surfer riding a wave. Follow these steps to draw a basic concave wave in pencil.
- To complete this drawing, you will need a good quality HB pencil, blending stick and eraser. You can also use a mechanical pencil.
- Draw and establish the horizon line this can be drawn at a slight angle.
- Progress onto the drawing and defining the top and bottom of the waves with a faint line.
- As you are drawing with a single line, the lines drawn at the front of the image will be darker than the waves depicted in the background.
- The next stage is to apply an underlying layer of shading to each of the waves, these can then be blended together with the blending stick. This will begin to form the appearance of shadows.
- Darker shading is now.
Experimental Techniques To Draw Water
Creating surface onto which you can draw reflections on the water is an effective way to create more preliminary drawings.
One technique that works well with tonal graphite drawing is to layer tissue paper.
- First, collect some good quality white card or cartridge paper.
- Collect some thin tissue paper and tear it into horizontal strips and irregular shapes and sizes.
- Once you have finished preparing your paper. Begin to paste it to the surface of your card.
- To speed up the process of drying, you can use a drying tool to dry the surface of your college.
- The process of creating a textural surface onto which you can apply tone can be taken a stage further by working onto the surface with a piece of sandpaper.
- Use the sandpaper to create areas of texture.
- Repeat the process once or twice until you are satisfied with the result.
- You can now begin the process of applying tone and shading with a graphite stick.
- The same process of drawing marks of various sizes can be applied to the surface of the sheet.
- Use a soft grade pencil applied at an angle or a graphite stick. Again, with larger marks in the foreground and smaller marks drawn in the mid and background areas.
- Look at finished by the artist Ian Murphy.
How To Draw A Seascape Waves Skies Graphite Pencil
Step 1: Add Sand. Since this is an ocean wave tutorial it makes sense that we need a little sand in our piece! For this particular window I’ll be adding sand in the bottom left corner and the waves will be going up and to the right but you can easily add sand straight along the bottom or even in the middle as a little island Step 3. Start off your drawing with the line of vanishing point which separates the sky and ground. Add two large fluffs above the vanishing point that will hold the clouds. Sketch two mounds below for the hills. Notice how the point between the sky and grou. nd is uneven. This causes more attention to the ocean rather then the sky
Drawing Reflections On Water
To visualize the fluid nature of water and now the environmental conditions affect how it moves and looks.
You can draw different shapes and sizes of waves to convey shadow and reflections.
To draw a reflection on the water, you will need to begin by drawing the basic outline of the object above the surface of the water.
Draw the objects shape faintly and once finished, bring your attention to drawing the refection directly beneath it.
Repeat drawing the same shape and proportions except it should be drawn in reverse.
Once you have completed drawing the outline shapes, begin to add more detail onto your reflection. You are now ready to begin shading.
If the refection you are trying to represent is on rippled water, you can convey this using oval-shaped lines and shading.
To begin to add more detail to the refection, you can need to blur the details of the image with a blending stick.

Thats One Way To Draw A Wave
Its not the only way, by any means, but when it comes to freehand drawing most types of landscapes, this is my go-to method.
When youvefinished your drawing, its a good idea to set it aside for atleast a day. Letting a fresh drawing sit overnight allows you toreview it with a fresh eye the next day. Thats the perfect timefor spotting errors in the drawing or finding things you might wantto change.
And when it comes to colored pencil work, finding and fixing those mistakes before you start work with a colored pencil is far better than trying to fix the mistake after a few layers of color.
Step 5 Add The Stitching & Finish The Line Drawing
Along the sections of the visor you can add some stitches that baseball caps usually have. Please note that adding the stitches is optional.
If you do choose to draw them do the following:
If you chose note to draw the stitches you can simply just do the first part of the above list and move on to coloring.

Step 3: Add Smaller Details
When youresatisfied you have the large, basic shapes correct begin adding smaller details. Continue lookingfor shapes, but now look for the smaller shapes within the largeshapes.
Also beginrefining all the shapes. If you used short straight lines for the bigshapes, start smoothing them out and making them look more like thecurved shapes of the wave.
Continue using light pressure so you can draw over these lines if needed. Drawing with light pressure also means you can erase mistakes more completely.
This is also agood time to start creating the illusion of space or distance to yourdrawing by making the foreground shapes a little darker and moredetailed than the background shapes.
I added a line in the left background to suggest another wave coming in and made the similar line on the right a little crisper.

Bob Penuelas And The Wilbur Kookmeyer Legacy
In 1985, Bob Penuelas created a cartoon character called Wilbur Kookmeyer as a supporting character in the comic strip “Maynard and the Rat,” published in Surfer Magazine from 1980 to 1987.
Penuelas was born and raised in San Diego, California. His father taught him how to draw when he was only four years old.
The artist has always been attracted to surfing and art, so he spent a lot of time doodling dreamy surfing waves during high school classes.
Penuelas’ impressions of Southern California and its unique surf culture are the result of countless hours spent surfing and hanging out at the beach.
Wilbur, the kooky little surfer, clicked with the readers and soon spun off to star in his comic strip.
It’s a satirization of the pseudo-surfers that started showing up at the beach in the mid-1980s wanting to look cool and mimic the surfing lifestyle without even knowing how to surf.
As an illustrator, Bob Penuelas drew thousands of waves, from super hollow cylinders and heavy closeouts to mushy rollers, and perfect corduroy lines stretched the horizon.
They’re arguably the most recognizable hand-drawn waves ever, alongside Katsushika Hokusai’s “.”

Step 3: Draw the small splashes randomly in the bigger splash using small curved lines forming pointed ends. Draw a big water ripple using the outermost circle drawn in the first step. Draw a few water droplets randomly coming out from the splash.
Step 4: Color the water using a light and dark shades of blue highlighting the water splash.
How To Draw An Ocean Wave
Pen and ink is a medium which lends itself particularly well to the drawing and of reflections and the surface of the water. Ballpoint pens, as well as fine line nips, are all great for drawing precise lines.
- Draw a curved line which dips towards the end, this is a basic shape onto which the details of the wave will be built upon.
- Next, draw a concave C shape under the crest of the wave.
- Draw a smaller irregular line which will represent the whitewash foam.
Step 4: Refine Shapes And Continue Adding Details
Refine all of the shapes and continue adding details until you have as complete a drawing of the wave as you want. That will differ from artist to artist. Some prefer to keep the line drawing loose and to fill in the details at the rendering stage. Others want completely detailed line drawings before starting with color. The choice is yours.
However you draw a wave, its important to aim for capturing the character or personality of the wave rather than making an exact drawing.
