In This Drawing Tutorial I Will Show You How To Draw A Wolf The Animal Most Often Found In Fairy Tales And Other Works Of Art
This lesson on how to draw a wolf will be useful not only for those who want to portray this animal but also for those who want to depict a dog or a fox. All these animals are drawn in a very similar way.
The entire instruction consists of eight really simple stages. Each stage consists of simple lines and geometric shapes. At the very end, you will need coloring tools.
Wolves are most often gray, white, or light brown. If you decide to turn your drawing of a wolf into a fox, then just color this beautiful animal orange.
So lets get down to the tutorial and create a real work of art!
Time needed: 1 day and 30 minutes.
How to Draw a Wolf
First sketch out the muzzle of the wolf, then the back of the head.
First sketch out the triangular ears, then the torso in the shape of a simple oval.
Detail the wolf drawing by adding some hair under the chin.
First depict the outlines of the legs, then the rounded paws.
As you can see, these legs are partially overlapped by the ones drawn in the previous stage.
Depict the eyes, nose, mouth, and muzzle. Draw the pattern on the face and ear. Draw the tail with two lines.
After erasing all the construction lines, trace and darken the drawing.
As I said above, you can color your wolf gray, white, or light brown.
Go Over The Drawing With Ink And/or Color
To finish your drawing in ink, pull out your favorite pen and slowly trace over your final drawing. Once youve gone along all of the graphite lines, consider adding texture to some of the white areas of the illustration to make it pop. Hatching and drawing dots are two easy ways to cover blank space in an interesting way.
Finally, once you’ve given the ink ample time to dry, erase any remaining pencil lines. Congrats! You now have a dramatic illustration of a wolf howling at the moon.
Add The First Construction Lines
Draw a centerline down the very middle of the oval shape, and another across about one third down from the top. This will help you identify where you are going to have the wolfs eyes and eyebrows, as well as a basic idea of where the ears and snout/nose will be centered. With this information, you will also able to find out where the mouth will be on your wolf sketch.

Sketching The Head Shape
For our very first step, we will need to decide where on the canvas or paper we want our subject to be. In this tutorial, we have decided that the best position for our subject is in the center of the page, creating a focal point.
With a lightly shaded pencil , draw an oval shape. This will represent our subjects head shape in and around which we will be working. You can also draw several blocks across the surface of your paper or canvas so as to help you identify your center points, thus aiding with the perspective of your wolf drawing.
For this step, be sure to leave enough space all around the oval shape for subsquent steps, where we will be adding more details and fur.

Sketch The Basic Shape Of The Legs And Tail
The height of the wolf is about two times the height of the body, plus an extra one sixth. Draw the front leg with a curved front and straight back. For the hind legs, draw a long ‘S’ shape in the front, and tapered at the back stopping halfway down.
From there, drop a straight line down to indicate the heel. The triangular shaped toes should look long and big. Draw the rest of the legs that are hiding behind the other front legs, make them slightly staggered to look more interesting and three dimensional. The tail shape is thick and long, dropping down to the heel.

Its good practice to do a bit of research before beginning any drawing. In the case of a wolf howling at the moon, try and collect a few images from different angles to better understand the shape of the wolf’s open mouth. Be very selective and find high-quality photos with no obstructions of the wolf’s head, legs, and especially paws . For this reason, it’s smart to collect a couple of images, as it’s hard to find one perfect photo that will show you everything that you need.

Second Step Extra Guidelines
With the framework well on the way, there are still a few extra things to include. Take a look at the image to the right to see what I mean.
First, draw crosses over each of the three main shapes. In doing so, it will be much easier to keep things aligned. They help you by creating a centerline to work from, which helps to maintain symmetry if and when you need to.
There are also a few more distinct features that need to be added to the face of your wolf eyes, ears and nose. Go ahead and lightly sketch them in similar to how Ive done. Ensure that the nose is positioned more over to the right. This shows that the head is slightly turned to the left .
For the legs, I decided to switch over to a bright green. Because the wolf is turned slightly to the left, you only need to draw one of the back legs. Draw the two front legs as simple straight lines and make them symmetrical.
OK, looking good! Now on to the actual drawing
How To Draw A Wolf Growling
Please PAUSE the How to Draw a Wolf video after each step to draw at your own pace.
For the first few steps, dont press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw a short diagonal line for the snarling wolfs first eyebrow. Now draw another short, diagonal line facing the opposite direction for the second eyebrow. Curve the outer tips of the eyebrows down and the inner tips up. Dont place the lines too far apart. The line on the left should be a bit longer than the line on the right.
Step 2: Below each eyebrow, draw a flat diamond-like shape for the eyes. You can add pupils inside the wolfs eyes if youd like, or just leave them blank for a more ferocious look. The eye on the right should be a bit smaller because of the perspective.
Step 3: Lightly sketch a small oval below the eyes for the nose. When you get the size and placement right, darken the lines. Add the wolfs nostrils inside near the bottom.
Step 4: Draw a long, curved line under the cartoon wolfs nose for the top part of the muzzle. The line should wrap around the bottom part of the nose, then stretch toward the left a bit.
Step 5: Draw a few curved lines above the nose for wrinkles that emphasize the wolfs snarl. The lines should start on the outside , then curve in and down toward the nose.

Sketching A Wolf Face
Draw the geometry of the wolfs face .
Refine the geometry by adding the wolfs ears and mouth.
Draw the outline of the nose, and give details to the mouth.
With a free hand, roughly make the eyes, jaws, and the neck part as shown.
Next is to do the fur detailing. For the eyes and nose, use a soft pencil like 6B and strike out the dark details. Put lighter strokes in the direction of the fur on the wolfs face. Now, use an eraser to give certain highlights to the face, in the same direction as that of the stroked fur.
Erase a few of the original sketch lines. You can use powdered graphite here to shade the drawing. Apply a black tone on the nose and markings, and mid-tones for highlighting and creating a shadow-like texture. Be careful to keep white spaces in the sketch, for giving a furry effect. Of course, you should still be able to make out the original sketch vividly.
Add darker strokes around the ears, and the dark fur on the eyes , using an 8B pencil. Observe the way the fur has been outlined in the image, its direction changing from the face to the ruff.
Lightly Sketch The Basic Shapes
First, using your pencil of choice, lightly sketch the basic shapes of the head, chest, and hindquarters. At this stage, we are just measuring out the proportions, so consult your reference photo often to see if it roughly matches up to your wolf of choice. After drawing the circle for the head, you can add a rectangular shape protruding from the sidethis will be the open mouth.
