The wolf is an animal that has captured the imaginations of humans for millennia. Wolves are native to Europe, Asia, and the Americas. They are the ancestors of “man’s best friend,” the domestic dog, but they have been both respected and reproached.

It is not surprising that the ancient Romans linked a growling wolf to their god of war. In Norse mythology, Loki fathered a giant wolf and Odin kept two of the animals as pets. In ancient China, the wolf was associated with cruelty or “wolf heartedness.”

Fables also include angry wolves, such as Little Red Riding Hood and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. In The Jungle Book, angry wolves protected Mowgli.

Despite its reputation, the wolf is actually a shy creature who typically avoids humans. Humans are not the natural prey of wolves, and attacks on humans are rare.

The growling wolf is a popular motif on the back of jackets, on vehicles, and in cartoons, especially anime. The image is one that conveys power, anger, and danger. In anime and manga, it may represent the extreme feelings of the character.

Would you like to draw a cartoon of a snarling wolf? This easy, step-by-step cartoon animal drawing tutorial is here to show you how. German shepherds and several other dog breeds closely resemble their ancestor the wolf. You may also use this tutorial to sketch a growling dog.

Add The First Construction Lines

Draw a centerline down the very middle of the oval shape, and another across about one third down from the top. This will help you identify where you are going to have the wolfs eyes and eyebrows, as well as a basic idea of where the ears and snout/nose will be centered. With this information, you will also able to find out where the mouth will be on your wolf sketch.

Adding The First Construction Lines

Draw a line down the middle of the oval, from top to bottom, and then, about one-third below the top of the oval, draw a line across. This crossline will help you to decide where to draw the eyes and eyebrows, and will also give an indication as to where to center the snout and the ears. Once these features are centered, you will find it much easier to find the best position for the wolfs mouth on your sketch.

Position The Facial Features

Place the facial features as shown in the above example. The proportions used are the same as for most other tutorials here on AnimeOutline.

Draw the eyes just below the the horizontal halfway point of the head. Make the pupils round and with the inner ends of the top eyelids slightly lowered. Draw the top of the pupils slightly covered by the top eyelids and leave some space between them and the bottom eyelids.

The round pupils will make the eyes more wolf like.

Slightly above the eyes draw fairly thick eyebrows. For more types of eyebrows also see:

Draw the nose to one side of the vertical halfway line of the face. Really you are just drawing the outline of the shadow on the side of the nose.

Position the mouth with the bottom lip between the nose and the chin and draw the mouth itself slightly above it in a fairly wide smile. This is optional depending on the kind of character you want but if you look at photos of real wolves their mouths often have a sort of smile like shape. Like the nose the bottom lip will really be just an outline of a shadow this time cast on the chin.

“A dog cannot make this journey alone, but maybe a wolf can.” – Boris, Balto

The wolf is the largest of the wild dogs. The gray wolf or timber wolf can be found throughout Europe and Americas, and the Ethiopian or Abyssinian wolf lives in Africa.

Wolf howls can be heard for miles and may sound eerie to the human ear. But for the wolves, “this is simply a social activity of the pack a form of communication.” Wolves howl to locate one another, to announce territorial boundaries, or simply because they’re happy. In addition to howling, wolves also bark, squeak, growl, whimper, and yip.

Wolves have long played a role in myth, literature, and popular culture. Its natural range spans Europe, Asia, and North America, and the domestic dog arose from the gray wolf. In various cultures, wolves have represented evil and selfishness or wisdom and strength.

Famous wolf archetypes have included “the big bad wolf,” who assaulted Little Red Riding Hood as well as the Three Little Pigs. Aesop’s fables include “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” in which a wolf hunts the herder’s sheep.

On the other hand, a female wolf was said to have taken care of the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, when abandoned as children. The Jungle Book similarly finds a pack of wolves caring for an orphaned babe.

Tattooing is an ancient art that has been practiced since prehistoric times. When European settlers arrived in North America, many of their reports expressed surprise at the bodily decoration of the native peoples. Today, some people get tattoos with Native American-inspired designs, hearkening back to this history. These are often referred to as tribal tattoos.

The tribal wolf design is a popular example. The wolf, one of the largest North American predators, held deep symbolism for Native American peoples. According to the creation myth of the Pawnee, the wolf stole a bag that contained the first humans. When they were released, they killed the wolf, making him the first victim of death. Other groups believed that a wolf created the world.

Many tribes called upon the wolf for bravery, hunting skills, unity, or healing. The Omaha people have a legend of a wolf that guided a warrior back to his camp. The Cherokee had a “wolf clan” who would never kill a wolf.

Tattoo-style tribal designs are also used on clothing, vehicle stickers, and other media as a form of self-expression.

Necessary Wolf Drawing Materials

While drawing is by no means the only way of creating a piece of art of a wolf, it is certainly one of the easiest. Using pencil and paper is a great drawing method for beginners and those looking to explore their artistic abilities, whereas the use of a graphics tablet may appeal more to those with more experience.

Those going with the traditional method of drawing on paper cannot go wrong by using this sketchbook by Bellofy. This sketchbook will provide you with plenty of empty pages just waiting to be filled with your wolf sketch as well as many other pieces of art.

For sketching and drawing, you will need two to three different pencil shades of your choice. We recommend using a light construction or drafting pencil to begin with, such as this set by Nicpro. This is ideal for your preliminary sketch lines and markings, as the lead will be easy to erase later. To add shading, finer lines, details, and shadows, we suggest using this Dowswin 30-piece pencil and charcoal sketching set.

For those using a digital platform such as a graphics tablet, you will find that instead of a set of pencils, you will be working with a stylus, mouse, or drawing pen. Aim to use a standard set of brushes and ensure a balanced DPI on your mouse if you are not going to by using a stylus or graphics pen.

Adding Shading And Details

Here, we will start using darker shades of pencils to add detail and shading. We will add a darker color to the outer fur on the top part of the wolfs head and ears. The key elements of the wolfs face, which include the eyes, nose, and snout as well as the curve of the mouth, will be emphasized by adding darker shades. As you work on this, you will start to recognize the wolf in your drawing.

Once this has been finished, you simply need to fill in the inner fur with strokes to reach the outer fur. To help guide your fur direction outward on both sides, use the horizontal and vertical center lines. This will create a symmetrical look to the fur, and give the effect of a breeze blowing in the wolfs face.

At this point, you can erase the construction lines and begin to add two to three layers of fur. Start at the top of the head with harder strokes to create denser fur, then change to softer and fewer fur strokes for a fading effect down to the neck. With the construction lines erased, further layers of shading added, and the key facial features darkened for emphasis, your wolf drawing will likely be instantly recognizable by everyone who sees it.

You can make your wolf even more realistic by adding details, fine lines, and shadows around the eyes, snout, nose, jawline, ears, as well as the fur surrounding your wolfs face.

Draw The Fur For The Inner Area Of The Face

For this step add some fur patterns for the inner part of the wolfs face.

If you are going to be drawing the clumps using pencil over top of the construction lines you may have to erase the construction lines a small part at a time and then add in the clumps. Alternatively you can also lighter the entire line with an erase to the point where its barely visible so that you can keep it in the final drawing.

Draw the fur as follows:

  • Forehead as a set of stacked up small curves
  • Areas below eyes a sort of swirl that follows the shapes defined earlier
  • Above eye wave shapes random clumps that point in the general direction of the wave
  • Around eyes some small hints of fur above the eyes and near their inner ends
  • Inner parts of face varying length small strokes pointing slightly downwards and to the sides of the face
