Structure The Front Section Of The Body
Follow the underdrawing to structure the neck, and add a small hump on top of the shoulder section. Draw a line that comes down to the elbow with a curl at the bottom. Mirroring the curl, draw the shoulder and section it off from where the legs starts. The leg tapers down to the wrist, connecting to the tube-shaped hand jutting forward. Then attach the paw formed like the shape of a puck. Draw out the chest located behind the arm, right under the shoulders. Repeat the same thing for the leg behind.
A How To Draw A Wolf Head
Step 1: Draw two lines to make the wolf’s head. One vertical line passing through the middle of your sheet and the horizontal line passing through the other middle. Make sure that the intersection of these two lines creates a cross in the center of your sheet.
Add the top shape of the head by creating a curve on each side of the vertical line. Then draw the jaw of the wolf.
Step 2: Make the ears slightly triangular and connect them together by drawing a curved line.
Step 3: From the horizontal line, draw a pair of vertical lines downwards. Then, from these, draw another set of oblique lines going towards the large vertical starting line.
Draw a semi-circle with its open ends and connects the two oblique lines from the previous step. From these points of intersection, draw two curves pointing upwards to define the shape of the muzzle.
Step 4: Place the eyes so that their upper ends slightly overlap the horizontal starting line. A little higher up, the “eyelids” are formed from two lines that run towards the outer sides of the head.
Next, draw the muzzle in a round shape and then the mouth.
Step 5: Now we will refine the shape of the face by erasing the starting straight lines and replacing them with various more natural curves. These will help to better define the shape of the wolf’s head while making it already more realistic.
Step 7: Draw the fur for the inner area of the face. For this step, add fur patterns for the inner part of the animal’s face.
In This Drawing Tutorial I Will Show You How To Draw A Wolf The Animal Most Often Found In Fairy Tales And Other Works Of Art
This lesson on how to draw a wolf will be useful not only for those who want to portray this animal but also for those who want to depict a dog or a fox. All these animals are drawn in a very similar way.
The entire instruction consists of eight really simple stages. Each stage consists of simple lines and geometric shapes. At the very end, you will need coloring tools.
Wolves are most often gray, white, or light brown. If you decide to turn your drawing of a wolf into a fox, then just color this beautiful animal orange.
So lets get down to the tutorial and create a real work of art!
Time needed: 1 day and 30 minutes.
How to Draw a Wolf
First sketch out the muzzle of the wolf, then the back of the head.
First sketch out the triangular ears, then the torso in the shape of a simple oval.
Detail the wolf drawing by adding some hair under the chin.
First depict the outlines of the legs, then the rounded paws.
As you can see, these legs are partially overlapped by the ones drawn in the previous stage.
Depict the eyes, nose, mouth, and muzzle. Draw the pattern on the face and ear. Draw the tail with two lines.
After erasing all the construction lines, trace and darken the drawing.
As I said above, you can color your wolf gray, white, or light brown.

Draw The Fur For The Inner Area Of The Face
For this step add some fur patterns for the inner part of the wolfs face.
If you are going to be drawing the clumps using pencil over top of the construction lines you may have to erase the construction lines a small part at a time and then add in the clumps. Alternatively you can also lighter the entire line with an erase to the point where its barely visible so that you can keep it in the final drawing.
Draw the fur as follows:
- Forehead as a set of stacked up small curves
- Areas below eyes a sort of swirl that follows the shapes defined earlier
- Above eye wave shapes random clumps that point in the general direction of the wave
- Around eyes some small hints of fur above the eyes and near their inner ends
- Inner parts of face varying length small strokes pointing slightly downwards and to the sides of the face
Shaping The Facial Features
Draw softer, curved ear shapes over the construction lines. These shapes do not need to touch the lines of the oval, nor be perfectly symmetrical at this stage. When we add the fur later, the wolf features will become more realistic.
Next, we will draw the shape of the mouth, starting with the top lip curling up from the top of the bottom horizontal line, widening to just below the snout. Add detail with a hint of the bottom lip on the bottom line to emphasize this important facial feature.

Sketching The Shape Of The Head
As a first step, we need to decide where on our sketch paper or canvas to position the head of the wolf. We chose to place the subject in the middle of the page in this tutorial to create a great focal point.
To begin, use a lightly shaded pencil to draw an oval shape. With a graphics tablet, use a brush. The oval signifies the wolfs head shape, and we will be working in and around this oval shape. To assist you in finding the center points easier, you could also draw several blocks across the surface of your paper or canvas. These will help you find the right angles for your wolf face.
When placing your subject, make sure that there is enough space around the oval for additional steps, such as adding details and fur.
Necessary Wolf Drawing Materials
While drawing is by no means the only way of creating a piece of art of a wolf, it is certainly one of the easiest. Using pencil and paper is a great drawing method for beginners and those looking to explore their artistic abilities, whereas the use of a graphics tablet may appeal more to those with more experience.
Those going with the traditional method of drawing on paper cannot go wrong by using this sketchbook by Bellofy. This sketchbook will provide you with plenty of empty pages just waiting to be filled with your wolf sketch as well as many other pieces of art.
For sketching and drawing, you will need two to three different pencil shades of your choice. We recommend using a light construction or drafting pencil to begin with, such as this set by Nicpro. This is ideal for your preliminary sketch lines and markings, as the lead will be easy to erase later. To add shading, finer lines, details, and shadows, we suggest using this Dowswin 30-piece pencil and charcoal sketching set.
For those using a digital platform such as a graphics tablet, you will find that instead of a set of pencils, you will be working with a stylus, mouse, or drawing pen. Aim to use a standard set of brushes and ensure a balanced DPI on your mouse if you are not going to by using a stylus or graphics pen.

The Meaning And Symbolism Of The Wolf
Humans are likely to have associated wolves with symbolism since the early days of interaction between them. The symbols and their meanings have changed over the centuries, depending on the development of humans. The wolf was often negatively associated with darkness, aggression, and Chthonic powers, and positively because of their intelligence, excellent hunting skills, protecting their young, pack loyalty, and a well-defined social structure.
Wolves are believed to be closely linked to the sun, moon, light, and spirit. Some cultures believe wolves are guides to the dead and linked to Hades, God of the underworld.
Wolves have a history of being portrayed as evil in childrens stories such as the hungry wolf in The Three Little Pigs. The phrase, the wolf at the door was a symbol of the fear of hunger and starvation, which was widespread during the Great Depression in America and Europe. Additionally, the tale of Little Red Riding Hood may have been the inspiration for symbolizing the wolf as a sexual predator in the 20th Century and later as a symbol of male aggression.
Although legends of werewolves go as far back as Greek Mythology, the concept was embraced by more recent popular culture a man turning into a wolf every night of the full moon. Brought to life in comic books and horror movies, the legend of the man-wolf lives on.
