How To Draw A Female Face: Step By Step

Now that youve learned how to draw facial features from the eyes to the mouth, its time to put everything together into a portrait. Do not do this project before you have done the proper practice work. Go back and practice all of the facial features first.

And, before moving on to this demo, be sure to practice drawing hair. I covered this topic in another post, which you can find here.

Here are some tips for drawing portraits:

  • When you want to draw facial features, start with the eyes. This helps create a connection with the viewer and starts to capture the personality of your subject.
  • When you finish the eyes, move down and finish the nose, then the mouth. This is called the triangle of features.
  • Allow the darkness of the hair to help create the lighter edge of the face. Placing tone behind the face reduces the chance of things looking outlined.
  • When drawing hair, apply your pencil strokes going in the same direction as the hair growth.
  • Always remember the five elements of shading with everything you draw.

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a female face. Go one box at a time and be very careful with the shapes.

2. Apply the Darks and Start Building up the Hair

When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the darkest tones.

3. Blend and Lift

Finishing Your Side Profile

Above the eye, add a curved eyebrow and begin adding in the details for the ear. With your pencil, go back over some of the features that youve already added so that theyre darker and more prominent. From here, youll be adding the final touchthe hair.

Draw swooping lines over the top of the face circle and along the left side. For a ponytail, add a half-oval or knot shape with wispy lines coming from this as individual hair strands.

Adding in simple pencil strokes for the hair is the final step in finishing your drawing!

Once youve added the final touches to the hair, your profile drawing is complete!

The Lower Eyelid And The Pupil

The lower eyelid describes a slightly flatter arc than the upper one. It does not start directly at the end point of the upper eyelid. The upper eyelid goes a little further outward. In addition, the lower eyelid can curve slightly upwards on both the outside and inside. In a laughing person, this outer curvature is particularly pronounced because the laugh muscles push the outer edges of the eyes upwards.

Depending on how important this facial characteristic is to us, we can draw this line several times.

Place the pupil so it lies against the upper eyelid. This creates the effect of the eye looking directly at us.

Experiment With Size And Distance

This is another way to add interest and make your faces unique.

The wider the distance between the eyes, the more whimsical the face looks.

Also, the bigger the eyes, tho more whimsy you add to them. Here, you can play with the details in the iris, such as catchlights and color.

Another cool idea is to make the lips too small or too big for the face. Youll end up with interesting looking faces, and maaaan, what fun youll have.

If you want to draw a face from the side or profile view, these same proportional measurements apply. We’ll simply alter the location of the features, positioning them on the side of the head.

In fact, we can start the process in exactly the same way – starting with a circle with intersecting lines.

Drawing Male And Female Mouths / Lips

Drawing a mouth can be a challenge, but you can draw realistic lips when you break the process into simple steps. Follow along to create a full, realistic mouth and avoid making simple mistakes, like defining hard edges, that beginning artists tend to make.

When studying the mouth, you will notice the upper lip is usually smaller and will appear darker than the bottom lip. It creates an M shape.

There are differences between male and female lips. Female mouths are much more defined and seem fuller and shinier. The edges of male lips are more subtle and are described by the shadows around them more than the edges themselves.

Drawing Lips | Female

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of female lips.

2. Apply the Dark Patterns

When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the dark patterns of the lips with a pencil.

Make the upper lip darker than the bottom one. This is because the upper lip angles in, and the bottom lip angles out.

3. Blend Tones and Light Highlights

Blend the tones smooth with a tortillion. Be sure to create the tones of the skin around the lips so that they look realistic. Use a kneaded eraser to lift the bright highlights of the lower lip to make them look moist and shiny.

    Add The Ears And Hairline

Draw the upper portion of a circle inside the original curve at the top of your page. This will create a hairline for you to work from later on. From here, draw a light dotted line about a third of the way up from the middle horizontal line to mark a guideline for the tops of the ears.

Drawing additional guidelines helps to make sure your features are in the right places.

Take a curved line down each side of the face until approximately halfway down the lower half of the drawing . Inside each of the ears, draw a few ovals and lines to create the inner portion of the ear.

Skillshare teacher Jasmina Susak shows us how to add in the first features on the face.

I The First Way Three Equal Parts

    • Draw an oval in the shape of an egg.
    • Divide the oval into 3.5 equal parts by horizontal lines, as shown in the pic. The upper line is the line of hair growth. The middle line is the eyebrow line, the third line is the nose tip line.
    • Divide the oval in half by a vertical line.
    • Schematically draw the eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth. The corners of the mouth are under the middle of the eyes. The lower lip lies on segment 3.
    • Add details. Mark the cheekbones. They start just above the middle of the ear.
    • Add shadows, hide the construction lines.

Mark Guidelines And Start Drawing The Eyes

Across the middle horizontal line, draw five light rectangles. Inside the second and fourth rectangles, draw an oval that overlaps the middle line. Within each oval, draw a big circle and a small circle for the eyeballs, and a slightly curved line over each for the top of the eye. At the top of the guideline rectangles, draw in the eyebrows as curved rectangle shapes. Along the bottom of the guiding rectangles, sketch in curved lines to outline the nose with the tip of the nose resting on the bottom of the guideline.

Guidelines in the middle of the face help you to map out the eyes, nose, and mouth.

When youre learning how to draw a face, getting the eyes right is one of the most crucial elements in making your drawing more realistic. Start by going over the circle of the eyeballs in a darker pencil to frame them before adding lighter shading on the inside. Once youve shaded the whole eyeball, erase a couple of small spots around the pupil to give the eyes a slightly glassy look. Add in light shading to the corners of the eyes to start building out a more three-dimensional appearance.

Shading the eyes first will help you to see where you need darker and lighter elements.Shading around the eyes can be time-consuming, but enjoy the process of seeing your art come to life!Short pencil strokes will help you create realistic eyebrows.

How to draw a female face – Learn to Draw the easy way

Start from the left side of the face and work from the outside to the center. This will help to keep the shadow effect that youve already started on the left side of the nose. Shade with your darkest pencil along the outside edge of the face, moving lighter as you approach the underside of the center of the eye. Keep the shading light here until you start to reach the dark shading thats already in place next to the nose.

Adding darker shading on the side helps to mirror the shadow effect across that side of the face.

Working up to the forehead, keep your shading light as you move up the outside edge above the left eyebrow. As you shade towards the hairline at the top center of the face, keep your pencil as light as possible. The middle and right of the forehead should be some of your lightest shading to highlight the shadow coming down the left side of the face.

As you shade, think about where light would naturally hit the face and lighten your touch accordingly.

Continue to shade lightly across the right side of the face, adding in slightly darker shading directly underneath the center of the lower lip. As you move onto the neck, shade from left to right, keeping the dark shading for around three-quarters of the neck with a small triangle of lighter shading on the right side. Finally, shade the inside of the ears on both sides in both light and dark patterns to reflect where light would naturally fall.

Fill in some of the finer details as you go.

The female form and artwork go hand-in-hand. Since ancient times, women have been the subject of paintings, sculptures, and sketches. Hundreds of famous paintings feature portraits of women. This has not changed with the passage of time. Even today, popular culture such as anime cartoons are often centered around depictions of feminine characters.

Many of the women in art are religious icons. Ancient peoples made statues of their goddesses, such as Artemis and Athena. Some of these statues were huge and housed in temples. Others were small icons kept in private homes.

Artwork featuring women has had many meanings. Some are used to represent fertility or parenthood. At other times, women represent innocence or temptation. Inanimate things, such as “Mother Nature” have been represented in female form.

The woman in this drawing guide could likewise be used as a canvass on which meaning is painted. Her attire can also be full of meaning. If her gown is left unshaded, white, it could represent matrimony. Such elegant evening gowns are often associated with high school proms and the lifestyles of the rich and famous – yachts, cocktail parties, and red carpets. Or, the clothing could be considered seductive, as in the case of Jessica Rabbit.

Ii The Second Way Using The Width Of The Eye

    • Draw an oval in the shape of an egg. We divide the oval into 4 equal parts by vertical and horizontal lines.
    • As in the first method, we mark five equal vertical lines. The distance between the lines is the width of the eye.
    • In segments 2 and 4, draw the eye. At a distance of 1.5 eyes, the tip of the nose will be located. The ear is equal to the distance from the tip of the nose to the upper eyelid.
    • We mark the lower border of the lips at a distance equal to the width of the eye, measuring it from the tip of the nose.. The height of the lips is approximately equal to half the length of the eye.
    • Add eyelashes, hair and details, falling shadows.
    • Flip your drawing horizontally. Edit-> Transform-> Flip Horizontal.
    • The displayed pic clearly shows distortion. In this case, this was due to the fact that my oval was not level. Symmetry of the face can be checked at every step.

    Structure & Draw The Head

For a middle aged female anime characters head draw it taller than you would for a younger person. Kids generally have rounder faces than adults therefor a longer face will automatically make a character look older and more mature.

For the front view you can first draw a shape close to a circle. Draw two lines going down from that and two more lines going down form those meeting in the middle to form the chin.

For the side view you can draw the top of the head as an oval and then add the bottom section onto that. This can get a little tricky as you will want to indicate the nose right away. As suggested earlier you can do a rough drawing with light lines first and estimate where the nose should be and correct your drawing later if needed. For placing the nose see step four of this tutorial.

For now draw the area between the tip of the nose and the chin as a single line. The details of the mouth and bottom portion of the nose will be added in later stages.

How to Draw a Female Face: Side View
    • The eyes are found in the middle of the head.
    • The corners of the inside of the eyes generally line up with the edges of the nose.
    • The “mouth” line is about one-third below the “nose” line and the bottom of the chin. This line represents where the top lip meets the bottom lip.
    • The inside portions of the pupils or the iris generally line up with the corners of the mouth.
    • The ears are usually found between the “eye” line and the “nose” line, but extend up to the brow line.

When drawing faces, use these standards to help you get your facial proportions correct. Remember, you must look and study your subject. While these standards apply to most of us, they do not apply to all of us.
