Add The Legs And Feet

In comparison to their size, African elephants have surprisingly thin legs. So, beginning with the forelegs, sketch a long rectangular shapebending slightly at the knee to indicate that the elephant is moving. Keep the far leg straight. Moving on to the hind legs, use the shape of the elephant’s body to guide your drawing. The far back leg should be extending behind the elephant.

Next, it’s time to add the feet. Unlike drawing wolf paws, an elephant’s feet are fairly simple. Use your pencil to sketch a loose bell shape to the end of each leg.

Shaping The Trunk Of Your Elephant Drawing

This third step is a little more freehand than the previous two. We are going to draw the basic shape of the trunk, curving down from the top of the head circle. Begin by drawing a small upwards curving line from the right upper side of the head circle. Take this line down close to the side of the head circle, before curving it forwards and then backward and down to form a curved end. You can then curve this trunk shape back up to join the bottom of the head circle.

The inside of the trunk shape should be wider at the top and narrower at the bottom.

Attach The Trunk Eye Ear And Tail

Fill in a circle for the eye a little lower and left off the centre of the head. Right below the eye, follow the centre guideline to draw the long curved tusk. The skin will overlap right at the bottom of the head shape. The ear will look like big butterfly wing-shapes that covers the entire neck and droops down past the chin, and tucks right up to the centre of the head. The tail will hang down past halfway to the ground.

Creating The Final Outline Of The Easy Elephant Drawing

The construction steps have come to an end, and it is now time to use all of these lines and shapes to form the final outline of your elephant sketch. Begin with the elephant face drawing, adding an almond-shaped eye detail just above the trunk. You can then continue to outline the rest of the elephant face drawing, including the tusks, ears, and trunk.

Continue your outline down the body of the elephant sketch, following the construction lines closely.

When you get to the legs, create some small wrinkles around the joint areas and add two semi-circular toes on each foot. On the back of the rear legs, add a few more creases to create a realistic effect. When it comes to the tail, you want the tail to extend over the very back leg for a three-dimensional effect. When you get to the end of the tail, use some long curving strokes to create a furry end.

When you have completed your outline, you can erase the remaining outlines.

Go Over The Drawing In Ink

To finish your elephant in ink, pull out your favorite pens, and slowly trace over your final drawing. You can create interesting texture in your illustration by using a variety of inking techniques like hatching and stippling. Once youve gone along all of the graphite lines, consider adding large areas of black to create an attractive balance.

Finally, once youve given the ink ample time to dry, erase any remaining pencil lines. Congrats! You’ve completed your own drawing of an African elephant!

Elephants may be cute, but they’re also very wrinkly. Although it can feel detrimental to your drawing to fill it with lines, the final effect is oftentimes worth it. Try adding a few wrinkles where the elephant is carrying more skinlike the elbows, ankles, knees, and trunk. If you like the effect, feel free to continue adding texture to the rest of the body, but keep the ear more or less smooth.

Next, it’s time to complete your illustration with a little bit of background. Since you’ve already put so much effort into the elephant, you don’t need to add much more. Step 1

First, draw a large circular shape to represent the head. On the bottom of this shape, you can draw a large trunk using curved lines. Simply look at the illustration below to see how this first step should be made.

Step 2

Cool! Draw a second round shape just below the head. This new element must be slightly larger and longer. On the bottom, you can draw two more rectangles to illustrate the front legs of the elephant.

Step 3

The ears are created from long curved lines like shown on the image below. The back legs are also made from large rectangles and the tail is drawn from a small triangle.

Step 4

The eyes and the pupils are made from circular shapes. As you can see in the fourth step below, pupils are slightly closer to each other. It’s a good technique to give a more appealing look to the cartoon animal.

Step 5

Good! Complete this cartoon elephant by adding a long curved line inside each ear. You can also add small oval shapes inside the feet and draw two more oval shapes inside the pupils. 🙂

Joining The Head And Body

Now, we are going to attach the head circle to the main body circle with the front torso. Begin with the top of the elephants torso, taking a short line from the back of the ear to the top of the main body circle. For the bottom of the torso, take a line down from the bottom of the large ear.

You can then curve it down and back, creating a small hump, before joining it to the bottom of the main body circle.

How To Draw An Elephant: Step By Step Drawing The Outline

Step 1: Start outlining the elephant’s face

Start outlining the elephant’s head from about halfway up, and down to the chin. Round off the tip of the chin. Then outline the tusk.

Next, we start improving on our simple trunk sketch. Outline only the top portion of the “nose” circle. Then draw three more “folds” – simple curves – at the start of the trunk.

Step 2: Finish drawing the trunk and mouth

Draw small curves at the top to finish the trunk folds, where it is wrinkled from being bent up.

Then outline the rest of the trunk and the mouth. Notice we have added a slight bend to the small oval at the end of the trunk.

Step 3: Draw the elephant’s head

Now it is time to outline the rest of the elephant’s head and ears. Once you have done that, draw the eyes and fill in the pupils.

Step 4: Draw the elephant’s legs

In this step, we are outlining the elephant’s legs. If you want a simple drawing, you can draw the legs straight, the same as they are in the sketch, but they will look much better if instead of the straight lines you use smooth “S” curves. Do not forget to widen out your legs at the feet.

Step 5: Finish drawing the elephant’s body and tail

This is a simple step, just outline the visible parts of the body oval – and notice we are not closing it completely. Then draw the elephant’s tail and the little hairy tip.

Step 6: Add final details

Our elephant drawing is almost complete – here are the final details. Add two curves to mark the top of the ears.
