Eyes From Different Angles

From other angles eyes might appear flat if drawn in a straight line. The front area of the face is a little bent and the eyes appear slanted.

The form of the eye changes when the pupil moves. Dont be afraid to break up the eye shape to make it dynamic. The pupil moves on a sphere, not on a straight plane.

Especially when drawing eyes from a ¾ view it is important to imagine the spherical space they move on. Keep the thickness of the eyelids in mind. Stylised approaches might leave out some anatomical details, but the shape should still act like the realistic eye in order to achieve a 3-dimensional result.

When the head is turned away in semi profile you might only see the tip of the eyebrow and eyelash. Turning it more reveals there is no space between eye and eye bridge. This indicates a strong change of direction to where the head is facing before it turns into a full profile.

Key Facts About The Geometry Of The Eye

Start by getting a handle on the underlying shape behind the visible eye. Youre not drawing what you see, youre drawing behind the object, says illustrator and drawing instructor Lucas Elliott. Youre not just drawing the eye itself, but youre drawing the actual ocular orb and then everything on top of it: the eyelid, the eyelashes, the eyebrows.

The eyeball is a sphere.

To perfect the look of an eye, visualize the sphere of the eyeball. This will help you understand how each aspect of the eye is connected spatially, regardless of what is actually visible once you add other elements of a characters face. The skin surrounding the eye, the eyelid, the eyelashes, the tear ducts, and more it all wraps around the ocular orb. What we typically think of as the eye shape is actually the shape of the upper and lower eyelid and how they cover the eye socket.

Fill The Iris With Some Basic Lines

If you feel like its too much, thats okay. Even without these details, your drawing will look impressive. All these odds and sods may also be redundant if youre creating a portrait or a whole person sketch, where you wont be able to see such tiny details anyway. If so, feel free to skip to step number 9.

Otherwise, draw a wiggly circle around the pupil. This ring usually separates different colors, shades or structures in the iris.

Next, add a couple of straight lines around the pupil. They should start right in the center of the pupil and end at the iris edge . Make sure the distance between them is irregular the whole iris is quite a mess and we want to make it as disordered as possible.

Pro tip: Use a pencil thats a bit worn out so the lines have some thickness.

Add A Pop Of Contrast

Considering that all the wrinkles and texture are indentations in the skin, you should pair each highlight with a shadow. Do it with a worn out pencil or with a tip of a blending stump.

The light source is on the upper right, so all the notches should have a shadow on top or on the right.

I overlayed this picture with the one from the previous step to help you see the changes I applied.

Drawing The Eye Of A Goat

How To Draw An Eye With Ballpoint Pen

The pupils of a goat resemble horizontal rectangles. Remember what we learned about this kind of pupil? They give animals a wide field of vision, helping them to scan the horizon for predators.

I draw the eye and hairs surrounding it with a graphite pencil. The eyelids are quite thick and the eyelashes are long.

With a 0.1 liner, I apply cross hatching to the pupil and the inner corner of the eye. Dont forget about preserving the highlight.

I mark the direction of the hair growth with long organic lines and outline the eyelashes.

With a 0.05 liner, I add more hatches to create the illusion of the texture of fur. I create a subtle shadow in the hairs below the eye.

I also darken the eyelids and the iris. The rounded lines repeat the objects contours leading to the impression of form. The eyelashes are light, so the area right below them remains almost untouched.

The pupil needs some more fine hatches too.

With a 0.1 liner, I increase the contrast in the drawing. The eyelashes and the hairs near the eyelids become more visible and stand out with additional contrast.

I expand the area of fur with additional lines, using both 0.1 and 0.05 ink liners.

Create A Line Drawing Of An Eye

To produce a line drawing of the eye concentrate on the quality of the line you are drawing with.

  • The strength of the line you draw with is dependent on how well you control and hold the pencil.
  • Focus on establishing the underlying form of the eye with a faint pencil line.
  • Once you have drawn this outline, progress by applying the linear aspects, shapes, lines, and fine details. Again this will be added to the main features and forms.

How To Draw Anime Eyes

Some credit William Shakespeare with the maxim, “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” This means that you can learn a lot about a person by watching their eyes.

The eyes are one source of nonverbal communication – we show our feelings to others when we cry, when our eyes are drawn up along with a smile, when they grow wide with fear, are squinted in anger, or when we roll our eyes in contempt.

The Japanese animation style known as anime takes the art of the eye to a whole new level.

The eyes of anime characters are large and expressive, often square in shape and somewhat pointed, rather than round.

Each artist or series displays a distinct drawing style, which may include interesting styles of hair and dress and differing degrees of realism.

Modern anime arose during the 1950s, following the success of American animated cartoons, such as those produced by Walt Disney.

Since then, the popularity of anime has spread around the world. Many popular cartoons are dubbed with other languages, such as English, and marketed around the world.

A subculture has grown up around anime and manga – not only do fans watch the television shows, but they often delight in playing video or card games, reading books, dressing up as characters and engaging in live action role play, or learning to draw their favorite characters.

Introduce Skin Texture With Highlights

This is another step you can skip if youre creating a less realistic piece. If so, jump to step 30.

See all those tiny wrinkles in the eye corner? Its drawing with eraser time again!

I used my eraser pen for that its super thin and does a great job with lines.

First, draw some lines and spots in the eye corner, then move to the skin on the lower lid.

This texture may look complicated, but I created it by simply stroking the area in one direction first, and adding some random lines later . The goal is to create a pattern that kinda looks like skin cells a net of tiny lozenges and triangles.

While I had the eraser in my hand, I also added some highlights around the waterline and on the eyeball.

Next You Will Be Adding More Detail To The Pupil

Well be finishing off the pupil of your eye drawing in this next step. For this step, simply draw in some short lines from the outline of the iris towards the inner pupil, but they shouldnt quite touch the pupil outline.

You can keep these a little irregular as seen in the image to create a more realistic look. Lastly, draw in two lines above and below the left corner of the eye as you can see in this picture.

Use Color Pencil To Draw The Eye

To begin this drawing using the same technique of faintly sketching out the underlying shapes of the eye.

  • Your aim now is to build up layers of color pencils. Again, I suggest with the shadows on the eyelid and eyeball.
  • Dont use black to create shadows, but instead build up layers of darker colors of shade. This will give your drawing a greater sense of depth. Whereas black shadows will make your picture seem flat.
  • Progress on to applying color to the pupil and iris, building up details, reflections and highlights.
  • Finally, focus on aspects of your drawing where you can add fine details. Eyelashes are an excellent example of where this can be achieved.
  • Draw the curving form of the eyebrows. Achieving this will add a level of realistic detail, which will create a more finished drawing.
  • Finally, apply shadows around the form of the eye.

Drawing Circular Cartoon Eyes

  • 1 Circular eyes seem to make the most sense being placed evenly apart from each other, as opposed to side-by-side.
  • How high or low the eyes sit on the face could help convey an emotion, so take that into consideration as you begin to draw.
  • You will also need to decide how big you want the eyes to be. How much space of the face they take up determines what other features you can add to it.
  • 2Draw a pair of circles in your face at an equal distance from the vertical line of the cross.XResearch source Circles are a great shape for cartoon eyes because humans do not have circular eyes.
  • Use your compass to make these circles. Be sure to adjust the angle of your compass in order to make smaller circles.
  • Make the circles large enough to leave room for pupils inside.
  • Remember that you may need to hold both legs of the compass to avoid your angle widening as you draw the circles.
  • 3Shade dark pupils somewhere into the circles. Circular eyes are great for conveying a few different emotions, and the placement and size of the pupils lend showing to these emotions.
