Divide The Body Parts Into Different Sections
The first step is to structure the full image into appropriate proportions. The real figure can be a bit different, but this rule generally applies to all sorts of character drawing.
Most of the time, the proportions are all equal sizes, however, you do have the liberty to personalize it in your way. I have kept 1, 2, and 3 of equal sizes, while 4 and 5 are of different sizes. If it looks fine then theres no problem in playing with the basic principles.
As you must have realized, the structure is a line drawing of the anime male. His joints are shown through small circles on shoulders, elbows, waist, knees, and ankles.
The character is standing slightly tilted. So, his right leg looks shorter than the left one. The right leg is bent to support his slant upper body. This will become clear as we draw the parts of the structure.
First, we are going to start with the face, then the body, and finally, conclude with the legs. We will use the guidelines to draw each part.

Drawing A Loner Anime Male Character
The male loner character can either be shy or socially awkward or may just plain dislike people. These types of characters can be both positive and negative depending on the story.
For the loners normal look draw the eyebrows with their ends slightly raised. Draw the top eyelids slightly lowered and draw the bottom eyelids with wider curves. Make the irises fairly small. Underneath the eyes add a few curved lines to show bags under the eyes .
Draw the mouth in an upside down curve.
Thee combined features will give the loner a somewhat uncaring and unfriendly look.

Drawing A Scheming Antagonist/villain Male Anime Character
A scheming/plotting type expression is another one a negative anime/manga character is likely to have. This is a face they can make when anticipating the success of their plans.
To draw a scheming expression position the inner ends of the eyebrows to be very slightly raised, draw the eyes looking down with the top eyelids lowered. Draw the mouth with a smile and again add a hint of the split between the top and bottom rows of teeth. These will make the smile look less friendly and more like a grin.

Adding In Facial Features
Firstly, add the ears. From top to bottom they should go from the eye line to the nose line. Add in the nose, which can be of any shape but it must just touch the bottom of your horizontal nose line.
NOTE: To help with how big to make the eyes, the eye guideline from ear to ear should be roughly five eyes wide. This means that your eyes should have an eyes length that separates them in the middle.
The eyebrows require simple curved lines above the eyes and the placement doesnt really matter too much, they just need to follow the placement of the eyes. You can experiment with different shapes and placement to portray various different emotions.
Lastly, draw the mouth line halfway between the bottom of the nose guideline and the bottom of the lip line.

Learning How To Draw Anime Male Characters
Anime male characters can be a challenge to draw. The big-eyed style and the sheer cultural prevalence of female characters can be hard to make an anime character seem masculine. There are a few basics steps to take.
Female bodies tend to have an hourglass kind of shape, curving in at the stomach and flaring at the hips. Accentuating this is an easy way to make it obvious a character is female. The male torso does not curve in very much by contrast.
A males legs should also be blockier shapes for more muscular men and skinnier, straight legs for less muscular ones.
Male shoulders are also typically broader. Very muscular men might have their neck expand into their shoulders. Take a look at existing male anime characters and note how they are artistically different from females.

Shade The Hair Add The Chin
Now you need to shade the hair for the final touch. In general, Manga artists pick a section of the hair to be highlighted and shade accordingly. Hair is typically shiny and therefore shaded with high contrast. In other words, the change from dark to light happens abruptly over a short distance rather than gradually over a longer distance. Use a photographic reference for help on highlighting hair.
The final touch: Draw lines that curve slightly inward down from the chin. These simple lines form your characters neck. In general, men have thicker necks than women, but keep in mind that the age of the character matters as well. In Manga, very old and very young males are usually drawn with skinny necks. You can shade the neck and face if you wish but keep it simple and dont overdo it.

Drawing Anime Mouths How To Draw The Mouth Open
Drawing anime mouths is a lot about being able to summarize something complex into something incredibly and efficiently simple. At its core, anime and manga art is grounded in realism, simplifying it to its most basic elements, and providing flare through artistic license and stylization, visual design, and visual narrative.
Drawing anything anime requires careful and patient observation of reality, and then the careful transition of such observation to something that is representative of the spirit of anime and manga art.
Drawing anime mouths and lips is extra difficult, because the subject matter changes shape as it opens and closes, and exists in a variety of examples, all of which serve to buttress the impact of the overall character design.
So how do we learn to draw anime and manga mouths and lips? How do we learn to draw something that changes based on the angle, based on the character, based on the expression? There are, after all, so many variables!
If you really want to learn how to draw anime mouths and lips in a way that is reflective of the best of anime and manga art out there, my current best recommendation is to learn to draw through sheer brute force.
Anime Male Character Face Proportions
These are the default proportions that the characters in this tutorial will refer to. So when you read something like draw the eyebrows lower down or make the eyes narrower it will usually mean in relation to this example.
Please keep in mind that they are just a guideline for getting male anime style looking characters. As already mentioned there is a lot of variation in the anime/manga style so this drawing template may not always apply.
For a detailed guide on drawing a male anime face see:
If you just want a quick breakdown of the placement of the facial features and drawing steps you can read below:
- Eyes make a horizontal line through the middle of the head and draw the eyes below that
- Ears make another horizontal line between the first line and the bottom of the chin and draw the ears between these two lines
- Nose position the nose with its bottom at the line used for the bottom of the ears
- Mouth draw the mouth with the bottom lip between the bottom of the nose and the bottom of the chin and the mouth itself slightly above it
Draw the eyebrows slightly above the eyes.

Male Anime Face Shape Breakdown
Before going into drawing specific character archetypes its a good idea to first analyze the characteristic features of male anime faces. While there is quite a bit of variation in the anime and manga style generally all anime characters tend to have large eyes, small noses amd simplified mouths with no lips.
Younger anime and manga male characters are often drawn with almost the exact same faces as females. Older male characters are more likely to have longer faces, wider chins, and smaller/narrower eyes . For this tutorial we will use a very generic male face that can be either a high school student or a younger adult.
The generic shape of this type of male anime face can basically be broken down into the three simple shapes in the example above.
Drawing A Complete Anime Character
It is not a small feat to draw a complete anime character but mastering all the different parts needed you are able to draw the character you are imagining.
Face and head as a whole, body, and clothing and you have a complete anime character in your hands. As with everything, learning these things take time and only when you have the patience to learn you can become the anime and manga artist you have always wanted to be.
Imagining your very own character might not be as hard you think. Only the execution part is what takes time and energy. Luckily drawing anime characters is very forgiving as you can even leave the nose completely off if you wish to do so.
Even the head can be pretty unique in shape, pointy ears and chin. Anime can be seen as a natural entry point to drawing characters, just because its so simplified in its raw form, but if you really want to push it, you can draw amazing and very realistic characters with this style.
Its up to you how far you want to take this style of yours. From simplified to extreme realism. Anime and manga style lets you do both even at the same time if skilled enough.
There are plenty of excellent tutorials to help you on your way and here are some of the best ones available for free. Some of showing speed paint like drawing and others explaining more of the process.
