Consider Shape When Drawing Hands

How to draw a skeleton hand

This is a good section to start discussing the drawing process:

Draw the contour shape of the hand first, before getting into the details of what goes inside of the shape. Look at good reference and try to carefully observe what goes into the shape outline of the hand, what features are visible? Study the shape of the palm and build the shape from there.

Keep the following in mind when observing the shapes you are drawing:

1. There are two main masses to deal with when drawing the hand: that of the palm and the one of the thumb attached to it. These masses shift, the palm folds, but the changes are minimal compared to the movement of the fingers.

2. The middle finger is the longest and is at the apex of an arch created by the fingers when they are extended.

3. When fingers are extended, their shape has a backward curve to it. Incorporate this backward curve when drawing hands with fingers flaring out, or the drawing will not look natural.

4. The palm has an arch to it pointing inward to the knuckles. Notice that the palm of the hand has a hollow in the middle, forming a sort of a spoon-like shape, especially when the thumb is brought close to the hand.

5. When clenched into a fist, the thumb does not stretch beyond the second finger.

Keep the above pointers in mind regarding the shapes when drawing hands. Now lets add some more information to your visual library by looking at important landmarks.

How To Draw Hands: How The Hand And Fingers Move

Now youve learned how to draw the basic shape of the hand from both sides, lets take a look at how the fingers move and how you can draw them more accurately.

First, lets take a look at how your fingers move without bending them.

Look at the top of your hand and fan your fingers out as far as you can, like in the illustration above. Notice how you can only fan them so far?

Its the small details like this that will make a big difference to how realistic your drawings and paintings look.

For this next exercise, well use the length of the forefinger as our main reference measurement like in the illustration.

The main points to remember are:

  • The maximum opening between the thumb and forefinger is about one-and-a-half times the length of the forefinger . So, its measurement 1 plus half this measurement again.
  • The maximum opening between the forefinger and ring finger is the same length as the forefinger
  • The maximum opening between your ring finger and little finger is the same length as the forefinger .Try it yourself by holding your first three fingers together and moving your little finger as far as it will go.Youll notice the little finger isnt extended as far as this in our illustration, but weve drawn the measurement anyway to show you how far it could go.
  • The maximum angle possible between your thumb and little finger when fanned out is 90 degrees. Again, try it yourself and see this measurement in action.

How To Draw A Hand Holding A Pencil

Our fingers can adjust to hold many different things, and its useful to have an idea of how some of the main poses look.

First, lets see what happens when we hold a pencil

Pick up a pencil or pen and hold it in your fingers like you were writing or drawing. Notice how your fingers bend and position themselves to ensure a comfortable grip?

The main things to remember here are:

  • Your index finger is the one with the most control.
  • Your middle, ring, and little fingers curl back towards your palm.
  • Your thumb works with your index finger to keep the pencil in place.

Traditional Skeleton Hand Tattoo

The traditional technique of tattooing first became popular in the 1930s and was inked by those on the fringes of society. During WW2, it gained even more popularity amongst sailors. The style is defined by its bold black lines, limited yet bright color palette, and often contains specific themes for example, nautical, zoomorphic, or skulls and hearts. The distinct style is bold and eye-catching, making it an excellent choice for a design that you want to show off. You can include interesting catchphrases, names, and dates, and various other imagery to make your piece unique to you.

How to Draw Hand Bones – Drawing Anatomy for Artists

Drawing a skeleton image on hand is not that difficult. Some people use temporary black markers whereas, some use little more permanent ones. Few have even permanently tattooed the image though we dont recommend it.

Here is how you can draw the skeleton hand tattoo.

  • Its always better to start fresh. So, wash your hand and get a marker or even a black pen which can write on your hand.
  • Start by drawing bony figures on your fingers leaving the joints. Make two bony figures on both sides of the joint of your finger and on your fingertips.
  • Then you can also draw bony shapes on the back of your palm leaving the joints.
  • Make some round bony shapes on the joints.
  • Make some horizontal bony shapes towards your wrist and apply shades.
  • You are ready to go.
  • If it sounds confusing, you can always google a skeleton hand picture and draw the same.

    Hand Muscles And Hand Tendons

The muscles in the forearm and palm all work together to keep the wrist and hand moving, stable, and well-aligned. The image below shows the bones of the hand from the back side. The red lines show where the tendons attach the muscles to the bones.

Many of the muscles that move the fingers and thumb originate in the forearm. Long flexor tendons extend from the forearm muscles through the wrist and attach to the small bones of the fingers and thumb. When you bend or straighten your fingers, these flexor tendons slide through snug tunnels, called tendon sheaths, that keep the tendons in place next to their respective bones. Within this sheath, a slippery coating called tenosynovium surrounds the tendons, and keeps the tendons moving smoothly under the ligaments when the hand is in motion.

Tendons are white, flexible rope-like cords at the ends of muscles that attach muscles to bone. When muscles contract, they pull on the tendons to move the bones. The tendons that run down our fingers are held in place by a series of ligaments, called pulleys, that form stable arches over tendons, forming a tunnel-like sheath. Normally, the tendons glide easily through the tunnel.

Human Anatomy Fundamentals: How To Draw Hands

Of all parts of the body, the hand is by many considered to be the hardest to draw. We all have stories of how, early on, we would keep our characters’ hands behind their backs or in their pockets, avoiding as much as possible the task of tackling hands. Yet paradoxically, they are our most readily available reference, being in our field of vision every moment of our lives. With just one extra accessory, a small mirror, we can reference hands from all angles. The only real challenge, then, is the complexity of this remarkably articulated organ: it’s almost like drawing a small figure onto a larger one, one doesn’t know where to start.

In this tutorial we will deconstruct the hand’s own anatomy and indeed demystify it, so that when you look at a hand for reference, you can make sense of it as a group of simple forms, easy to put together.

I use the following abbreviations for the fingers:

    • Th = thumb
    • LF = little finger

Learn How To Draw Hands More Effectively Using Your Knowledge Of Anatomy

As you learn how to draw hands,a little knowledge of how the hand is formed will help you avoid common mistakes when youlearn how to draw hands.Great artists have beenstudying anatomy since at least the Renaissance. They used their understanding of human anatomy to make sure that the figures they painted appeared convincing.

An artist doesn’t need to know all the details of the inner structure of the body, however. All you need to worry about right now are the major bones and muscles of the hand, how they are arranged, and how that affects the appearance.

The bones that form your hands can be broken into three groups

    • The carpals that form the wrist and base of your hand
    • The metacarpals that run beneath your palm
    • The phalanges that form your fingers.

A simple rule of thumb is that the length of the middle finger is the same as the length of the metacarpals. Of course, there is a lot of individual variation, but if you keep this in mind, it will help you draw the fingers and palm with the correct proportions.

A crucial but often overlooked point is that if you draw a line connecting the four joints above carpals, it will curve.

If you do the same thing for the second set of knuckles, you will see it curves as well. If you draw a line between the farthest joints on your fingers, you will see that it has the most curvature of all. Remember this relationship between the joint positions it will help you avoid drawing hands that look like bunches of bananas.

The thing about skeletons is that the real things are, of course, incredibly detailed. Even a pro would probably sweat at the thought of trying to draw a real one.

That doesnt mean though that skeletons have to be off limits for children. OR that they have to be just lines under a skull. Especially during spooky season.

This tutorial is made to show older elementary students how to draw a skeleton with bones that look a little more like the real thing, without getting too overwhelming. It starts with a simple skull and works down matching one side to the other, which is always a good way to proceed with symmetrical shapes.

If any of your students look a little hesitant about taking this on, encourage them to just simplify things as needed. The point is, a pretty good effort at drawing a more complicated shape, will always look more impressive than settling for a simple one.

And besides, how many adults would know if a few bones were missing anyway?

How Bad Does A Hand Tattoo Hurt

If you’re interested in getting a hand tattoo, you should be aware that it is considered high on the pain scale. This is because of the thin skin and lack of muscle in the area, high concentration of nerve endings, and proximity to bone. The bigger and more detailed your ink is, the greater the discomfort. That said, everyone’s tolerance for pain is different.
