Draw Your Own Anime Eyes Step

How To Draw Cartoon Eyes (EASY!)

Lets now implement the common visual elements of drawing anime eyes by actually drawing one. Step by step.

No, you dont have to draw a hundred of them like I did, just draw one, get a feel for it, then decide what you want to draw next!

To me thats the great part of drawing, once a fresh canvas is in front of you, you get to decide what to do next! You feel like a ruler of your own domain or at least you should feel that way, or rather, you will feel that way once your skill level is where you are happy with it.

Okay, without further ado, lets draw anime eyes. So far we have learned eight basic parts of the eye as discussed in detail above, these are:

  • Eyelashes

Add The Outer Top Eyelid Eyelashes

It should be noted that you could stop at step seven of this tutorial and have a perfectly normal anime eye but since the tutorial focuses on female eyes we will add some eyelashes.

The first place you want to add the eyelashes to is the outer corners of the eye. Generally eyelashes sort of fan out around the eyelids so you can draw anime eyelashes in a similar way.

Next add some smaller eyelashes at the inner corner of the eye.

Since the eyelashes are fairly small you can also shade them as you draw them.

There is no need to add any in the middle as these usually tend to point forward and therefore visually sort of just merge into one shape.

Creating A Base With The Cross And Circle

  • 1Draw a circle on your sketch paper.XResearch source It will be helpful to draw a perfect circle using a compass, if one is available to you.
  • Set the width of your compass to a small or medium-sized circle. Place the point of your compass on the sketch paper, and gently place the pencil tip of the compass down on the paper. Pivot the pencil tip around the stationary point of the compass to draw your circle.
  • It may be helpful to lightly hold onto both legs of the compass, as the angle can sometimes widen with the pressure of pivoting and drawing. This will help maintain the size of your circle.
  • 2Use a ruler to draw a cross in the middle of the circle.XResearch source The cross splits the circle into four quadrants, which will help you position the eyes for the cartoon.
  • Draw the lines as close to the middle from top-to-bottom and side-to-side as you can. This will help ensure that your eyes are placed evenly and at an equal distance from each other.
  • 3Design the shape of the cartoon character’s head. Around the baseline of the circle, draw the shape of your character’s head.
  • The shape of the character’s head will inspire you in the type of eyes you give your character.
  • It will also help you determine whether your character is male or female or maybe even an animal or monster!
  • Drawing the shape of the head will include the chin/jawline, ears, and hairline.

How To Draw Anime Eyes Male For Beginners

Male manga and anime eyes look quite a bit different from female eyes. They are narrower, and lack the extra eyelashes. However, the process is very much the same.

Begin with a circle for the eyeball. Then add in the upper and lower eyelids. For the male anime eyes, draw the eyelids so they overlap your eyeball. This will make them more narrow.

Finish drawing your male anime eye using the same steps that you used for the female eye. Then use your black pen or marker to ink your drawing.

Add an eyebrow as well. And color your eye drawing the same way as described in the female eye drawing process.

Just like with the female anime eyes, the male eyes can be drawn in many different ways as well. Experiment with different ways to draw the male eyes, and see what style you like most.

Experiment with using different colors for your eyes as well. Dont feel like they always have to be blue or green. They can be purple, pink, brown, or any other color you want to use.

Add In The Final Iris Details

Its almost time to get to the coloring of your cute eyes drawing! For these final details, simply add in two small, white circles underneath the white ovals you drew in the last step.

Once thats done, you can color in the solid black of the iris to have it looking like the image.

Now that youve brought your cute eyes drawing to life with some final details, its time to finish them off with some colors!

Weve shown just one way that you could color in your drawing, but you should let your creativity run wild for this step.

Will you use a realistic eye color such as blue, green or brown to color it in, or will you be more stylistic and use something like pink, red or yellow?

To color in the eye, I would use a medium such as colored pens or pencils to not only give you more control for the small details but also add some beautifully vibrant colors to your drawing.

    Sketch A Simple Eye Outline

Sketch out all the basic shapes. Then, with lighter strokes, mark the outline of more prominent shadows youre able to notice at this point.

I started with the pupil and continued adding shapes around it.

How to sketch eyes using grid proper order

  • Pupil
  • More prominent shadows and wrinkles
  • Eyebrow
  • Line connecting the outer corner with the brow
  • Hover your mouse over the picture or tap it to see the numbers.

Remember that the pupil and the iris should be circles. Be sure to look at them from a slightly different angle and see if theyre more or less round. Another thing to have in mind is that the pupil should be right in the center of the iris.

Now, with every eye comes a spot of reflected light. The shape of it is defined by the light source, like a lamp or a window . Its common to notice multiple highlights in your models eye. I usually choose to ignore them one bigger spot is enough it makes the eye pop and keeps the drawing clean. Youll achieve the best results if the reflection cuts into the pupil, so its half there and half on the iris.

As far as waterlines are concerned, keep in mind that they get thinner closer to the inner eye corner. Visibility of the upper waterline depends on the angle from which we look at the eye.

Last but not least: be careful with lines that span across multiple squares. After youve drawn the contour in each square, look at the whole line again and smooth it out.

Quick And Easy Cartoon Eyes – How To Draw

Drawing appealing cartoon eyes is probably the most difficult thing to do. Eyes are the window to the soul and so many things can be said using only a quick look. You can also notice the same phenomenon is the wonderful world of 3D animation. Characters often don’t feel realistic because eyes look lifeless or too shiny. That’s why learning to create believable eyes is definitely something you should aim for.

Performance of eyes can vary from one creature to another. We already know what our eyes are capable of, but did you know that even in the middle of the night, an owl can see a prey move from a distance of 200 feet? That dogs don’t see colors very well? They mostly see things in black, grey and white. Some creatures like worms don’t have any eyes at all.

Studying the real thing before proceeding with the tutorial

It’s always a good idea to study the subject of a tutorial before proceeding with the step-by-step lesson. In this case, let’s take a look at the picture of a real human eye. First, you can see a basic eyebrow on top of this one . Only a few hairs are needed to illustrate this part of the body.

Next, you need to sketch the upper and lower eyelid using long curved lines. Eyelashes are also connected to these two basic parts. Finally, in the center of the eye, a large pupil can be seen. This one can be green, brown or blue. Eyes are filled with textures and reflections which make this specific area more difficult to get right.

    Apply More Skin Texture

As a final touch, lets add more skin texture.

Do it with a tip of a blending stump and a pen eraser . Just bump them into the surface of your eye drawing. This way youll create pores and tiny skin reflections. Just be gentle with the dark spots, if you make them too dark, the skin will end up looking dirty.

Et voilà! Your realistic eye drawing is done!

    How The Eye Works

The five senses include sight, sound, taste, hearing and touch. Sight, like the other senses is closely related to other parts of our anatomy. The eye is connected to the brain and dependent upon the brain to interpret what we see.

How we see depends upon the transfer of light. Light passes through the front of the eye to the lens. The cornea and the lens help to focus the light rays onto the back of the eye . The cells in the retina absorb and convert the light to electrochemical impulses which are transferred along the optic nerve and then to the brain.

The eye works much the same as a camera. The shutter of a camera can close or open depending upon the amount of light needed to expose the film in the back of the camera. The eye, like the camera shutter, operates in the same way. The iris and the pupil control how much light to let into the back of the eye. When it is very dark, our pupils are very large, letting in more light. The lens of a camera is able to focus on objects far away and up close with the help of mirrors and other mechanical devices. The lens of the eye helps us to focus but sometimes needs some additional help in order to focus clearly. Glasses, contact lenses, and artificial lenses all help us to see more clearly.

Some credit William Shakespeare with the maxim, “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” This means that you can learn a lot about a person by watching their eyes.

The eyes are one source of nonverbal communication – we show our feelings to others when we cry, when our eyes are drawn up along with a smile, when they grow wide with fear, are squinted in anger, or when we roll our eyes in contempt.

The Japanese animation style known as anime takes the art of the eye to a whole new level.

The eyes of anime characters are large and expressive, often square in shape and somewhat pointed, rather than round.

Each artist or series displays a distinct drawing style, which may include interesting styles of hair and dress and differing degrees of realism.

Modern anime arose during the 1950s, following the success of American animated cartoons, such as those produced by Walt Disney.

Since then, the popularity of anime has spread around the world. Many popular cartoons are dubbed with other languages, such as English, and marketed around the world.

A subculture has grown up around anime and manga – not only do fans watch the television shows, but they often delight in playing video or card games, reading books, dressing up as characters and engaging in live action role play, or learning to draw their favorite characters.

    Sketching Male Anime Eyes

  • 1Sketch the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a horizontal line with a slight curve. Then, draw a line with a slight upward curve coming down off one end of the first line at a 45-degree angle. Make this line about 1/3 the length of the first line you drew. At this point, the upper lash line will have a C-shape, and youll be able to see the outer corner of the eye. To draw the lower lash line, draw a short, horizontal line with a slight curve centered under the upper lash line.XResearch source
  • Male anime eyes are usually smaller and narrower than female anime eyes. The curves on the upper and lower lash lines should be slight so the eye doesnt look too round.
  • Draw the eyes about 1/8th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if youre drawing one.
  • 2Draw an oval between the lash lines. Center the oval and make the top and bottom overlap with the lash lines so only part of the oval is visible. Make the width of the widest part of the oval about the same as the length of the lower lash line.XResearch source
  • This will be the iris.
  • 3Add a small circle near the top of the oval. Draw the circle on the left or right side of the oval, near the top. It doesnt matter which side, but place the circle on the same side in the second eye if you’re drawing one. Make the circle about 1/10th the size of the iris.XResearch source
  • Youll leave this circle white later on so it looks like light is reflecting off of the eye.
  • Leave the small circles you drew white.

    Draw The Primary Reflection

Draw the main reflection area from the main light source such as an indoor light bulb, a fire, or the sun. You can erase the area of the pupil and shadow that is overlapped by the reflection.

The shape and color of the reflection can depend on the shape and color of the light source. Usually in anime you can simply leave the reflection white and give it a very generalized shape like a circle or an oval.

    Eyes From Different Angles

How to draw a Cartoon Eyes | Cartoon Eyes Easy Draw Tutorial

From other angles eyes might appear flat if drawn in a straight line. The front area of the face is a little bent and the eyes appear slanted.

The form of the eye changes when the pupil moves. Dont be afraid to break up the eye shape to make it dynamic. The pupil moves on a sphere, not on a straight plane.

Especially when drawing eyes from a ¾ view it is important to imagine the spherical space they move on. Keep the thickness of the eyelids in mind. Stylised approaches might leave out some anatomical details, but the shape should still act like the realistic eye in order to achieve a 3-dimensional result.

When the head is turned away in semi profile you might only see the tip of the eyebrow and eyelash. Turning it more reveals there is no space between eye and eye bridge. This indicates a strong change of direction to where the head is facing before it turns into a full profile.

How To Draw A Realistic Eye

Realistic drawing isnt THAT hard. It doesnt even take as much practice as one would think.

What you actually need to become a realism artist is patience. Realism is not about skill its about attention to detail. If you take your time to notice all the tiniest shapes and all different shades, youll become a realism artist next month.

As it turns out, the ability to see details and shapes in our surroundings varies between people. Thats the beauty of us humans were all different.

My solution to this is giving you the easiest way to start your drawing journey. In this tutorial, I am going to use a photo reference and a grid. Its not cheating and it definitely DOES NOT make you a bad artist.
