How to Draw Closer to God | Psalm 63

What do you do when the promises of God invoke pain, not comfort?

In 2009 I was desperate for God and daily devouring His Word. I sat on the floor of our churchs prayer room reading Psalm 84 when I came to verse 11:

For the LORD God is a sun and shield the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

For the first time in my walk with God, His promises created pain, not comfort.

Just weeks earlier I had lost our third baby in miscarriage.

How could it be true that God is a shield? He was not shielding me from loss.

How could it be true that God doesnt withhold good things? He was withholding children from me.

It was God who said children are a blessing. It was God who allowed that little heart to stop beating.

No, He had not been a sun and a shield for me. He had cast a dark cloud over me and exposed me to unimaginable pain.

My experience sharply clashed with the Scripture. Jesus said ask and you shall receive. I asked that these children would survive and instead watched them die.

God said He is near to the brokenhearted. I came to Him day after day in prayer and in the Word, and He had never felt more distant.

My experience and Gods promises created tension in my life. A dissonance. A sharp pain that up until this point was unfamiliar in my walk with God.

Have you been there?

How To Overcome The Spirit Of Grief

As we tried to help our neighbor, we learned she was suffocating from the weight of the sorrow she was carrying. She had no one to talk to and her family was not ready to talk about her grief or loss.

We are not counselors or experts in grief management, but we serve an amazing God and want to be used to bring His hope to others. We felt we had been given an assignment to encourage and help her overcome the spirit of grief to demonstrate the love of Christ to someone who was in tremendous pain.

We also recognized that this random visitor needed us to listen and embrace where she was and needed help finding God in grief.

When Reading Gods Words Contemplate Them With Your Heart And You Will Understand Their True Meaning

How to Draw Closer to God

We practice spiritual devotions and read Gods words every day. But is it that we can have a normal relationship with God as long as we read His words? Definitely not. How then can we read Gods words in a way that both achieves good results and that can enable our relationship with God to become closer? Gods word says: People believe in God, love God, and satisfy God by touching the Spirit of God with their heart, thereby obtaining His satisfaction when engaging with Gods words with their heart, they are therefore moved by the Spirit of God . Gods words tell us that, when we read His words, we must contemplate them and go seeking with our hearts, we must obtain the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit, and we must understand Gods will and what He requires of us. Only by reading Gods words in this way will our efforts bear fruit and we will draw closer to God. When we read Gods words, if we just give them a passing glance without really paying attention, if we only focus on understanding some letters and doctrines in order to show ourselves off and we pay no attention to understanding the true meaning of Gods words, then no matter how much we read His words, we will not conform to His will, much less will we be capable of establishing a normal relationship with God.

When we are born again, we are born into a spiritual world we never knew before. In the spiritual sense, we begin to learn, much like a baby, how to walk, how to talk andhow to function in our new life with Christ. We are introduced to a new diet of what we ingest, the habits we have and the lifestyle we live.It is of the utmost importance that we realize our new life is very different from our old life.No worries-God knows that growing as a Christian is a process, and not an overnight transition into perfection. However, we cannot let that be an excuse to continue in our old ways. So, what can we do to make progress in the process?

Get Into God’s Word Every Day To Get Closer To Him

If you’ve owned a Bible for years but have never read the entire book, this is a great time to start. There are several good resources available to help you read through the Bible in a year. Try it in a different translation than you usually read. Or, ask yourself where you want to be in your relationship with the Lord by the end of the year and then set tangible goals for getting there through study.

For instance, if you want to know God better, consider a study of his names in the Old Testament and Jesus’ “I am” statements in the New Testament. If you need to slow down and learn to listen for his voice, study all the Word says about “rest” or “hearing” or his “voice.” If there are character traits you know you need to work on, consider an in-depth study of some or all of the fruits of the spirit .

Seek The Truth And Practice Gods Word In All Things

The most crucial thing for us to maintain a normal relationship with God is to seek the truth when we encounter issues and to practice in accordance with His word. But in life, when we encounter issues, we often rely on our own experiences or we employ human means to handle them, or we deal with them according to our own preferences. We very seldom quieten ourselves before God and seek the truth, or deal with the issue in accordance with Gods will. This causes us to lose many opportunities to practice the truth, and we grow further and further away from God. Gods word says, No matter what you are doing, no matter how big the matter is, and regardless of whether you are fulfilling your duty in Gods family, or whether it is your private matter, you must consider whether this matter conforms with Gods will, and whether this matter is something a person with humanity should do. If you seek the truth in everything this way, then you are a person who truly believes in God . If you continue in My word, then are you My disciples indeed . Gods words show us a clear path. Whether we are doing work in the church or handling issues that we have encountered in our lives, we must always seek the truth and understand Gods will, see how to handle the matter in a way that meets Gods requirements, use the truth to resolve all the problems we may encounter and maintain our normal relationship with God.

The Center Of The Gospel

In fact, this is the very heart of the entire New Testamentgospel, isn’t it? That Christ came into the world to make a way forus to come to God without being consumed in our sin by hisholiness.

1 Peter 3:18 – For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God.

Ephesians 2:18 – we . . . have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

Romans 5:11 – We exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

This is the center of the gospel – this is what the Garden ofGethsemane and Good Friday are all about – that God has doneastonishing and costly things to draw us near. He has sent his Sonto suffer and to die so that through him we might draw near. It’sall so that we might draw near. And all of this is for our joy andfor his glory. He does not need us. If we stay away he is notimpoverished. He does not need us in order to be happy in thefellowship of the Trinity. But he magnifies his mercy by giving usfree access through his Son, in spite of our sin, to the oneReality that can satisfy us completely and forever, namely, himself. “In thy presence is fullness of joy, at thy right hand arepleasures forever more” .

The Example Of John Owen A Puritan

I mentioned earlier that the old Puritans called this drawingnear “communion with God.” We need to learn from them. J.I. Packersays that the Puritans differ from evangelicals today because, withthem, communion with God was a great thing to evangelicals todayit is a comparatively small thing. The Puritans were concernedabout communion with God in a way we are not. The measure of ourunconcern is the little that we say about it. When Christians meet, they talk to each other about their Christian work and Christianinterests, their Christian acquaintances, the state of thechurches, and the problems of theology – but rarely of their dailyexperience of God.

According to Packer the greatest of the Puritans was John Owen.Owen’s experience of communion with God is a great example for us.God saw to it that Owen and the suffering Puritans of his day livedcloser to God and sought after communion with God more earnestlythan we. Writing a letter during an illness in 1674 he said to afriend, “Christ is our best friend, and ere long will be our onlyfriend. I pray God with all my heart that I may be weary ofeverything else but converse and communion with Him.” God usedillness and all the other pressures of Owen’s life to drive himinto communion with God and not away from it.

How Should We Pray

Prayer is part of our worship, so we should pray only to our Creator, Jehovah. Also, since we are imperfect, we should pray in the name of Jesus because he died for our sins. Jehovah does not want us to repeat memorized or written prayers. He wants us to pray from our heart.Read Matthew 6:7 Philippians 4:6, 7.

Our Creator can hear even silent prayers. He invites us to pray on every occasion, such as at the beginning and the end of the day, at mealtimes, and when we face problems.Read Psalm 55:22 Matthew 15:36.

Drawing Closer To God

Oftentimes the cry of the believers heart is to be closer to the Lord, to hear Him more clearly, and to follow His Word more consistently. The good thing is that as much as we want to be close, to hear, and to follow Him, our Father in heaven wants these things for us even more than we do.

In fact, God has done everything necessary so that we can come close to Him and rest in His presence. He wants to be close to us, which is why He gave us His Spirit to live inside of usso we could live with Him minute by minute.

God initiated everything. He took action because of His great desire to forever be with the ones He created. We know He loves us because of what He said and did. He gave the best that He hadHis only Son to have us.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.

Gods Word clearly speaks of His desire for His creation. In Scripture, we see that the desire we have to walk closely with Him mirrors His desire for us to walk closely with Him:

The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has . . . predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will.

Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am.

But God didnt simply desire to be near us. Our Father made it possible for us to be with Him by giving us His Son.
