How Folds Appear And Their Types

How to Draw Clothing (folds and creases)

First, I will explain how folds appear, and their types.

When considering the folds of clothing, it is good to know their structure in advance.

An article of clothing is made up of parts sewn into multiple patterns to fit the body. The places where parts of a pattern joins is called the seam.

Lets take a white button-down shirt for example. You can see that there are a couple of seams. We will be using these seams as a starting point for drawing fold lines.

Drawing the seams of an article of clothing helps clothing folds to look more convincing. Instead of drawing in random places, find clear starting points for folds, such as seams.

Folds vary in strength and depth this important to keep in mind as you draw.

Folds that are too loose or soft or drawing heavy folds on people in the distance can result in a loss in three-dimensionality.

Start by drawing heavy folds concentrated near stress points, such as the elbows, shoulders, etc. Keep in mind that clothing wraps around the body.

Folds appear on clothing as it wraps around the body which is why keeping in mind the shape of the body is so important.

Drawing folds according to the shape of the body allows you to express the hidden parts of the body.

You can choose to draw strong folds to show the shape of the body even if there shouldn’t be any folds there.

Common folds include folds made from the cloth being pulled, folds made from leftover cloth, and folds made from overlapping cloth.

Use loose lines to draw them.

  • We are taking a shortcut in the guidelines. Draw the first two round shapes with the long line for Misaki’s torso and the check mark that extends from her middle line.
  • Lightly sketch in her hair. Give a curve to the spiked hair. Observe how the hair falls onto her torso circle guideline and draw it.
  • Draw in her sleeve with ruffles.
  • Stay with the guidelines and draw in the rest of her shirt and apron.

    Multiple Tension Point Folds Shading

As in the previous two examples the light in this one will be coming from the right side of the drawing and again slightly to the front of the cloth.

You can once again use either curved on straight strokes for the shading process. Straight strokes are used for the examples but they are still applied in a way that somewhat wraps around the shape of the cloth.

You will also want to yet again create a crosshatch by applying one set of strokes followed by another set of overlapping strokes at a slightly different angle.

Remember to be aware of the cast shadows and reflections. Generally the larger the folds the bigger the shadow they will cast. More pronounced folds will cast sharper shadows while smoother folds will cast smoother shadows.

Reflections will mainly happen on the curved sides of folds that face towards another fold. More pronounced larger folds will cast brighter reflections.

    Tip On Drawing Pant Folds

You would have seen different variations of pants. Without any doubt, they are the essential clothing items and the most stylish ones. The fabric of the pants is supported at the waist.

When you draw the lower part of the pants, they are narrowed down. When you are drawing pants, remember to add bumps to pants. Bumps show their origin and volume. Now, when you are drawing pants from the back, add folds under the hips. This would also lead to adding folds around the knees.

Generally speaking, intricate designs all start with very simple shapes and are easy to create once you know how, but unless you know where to begin, it can prove to be challenging. This tutorial guides you through fabric movement and folds, continuing on to creating a few simple features of more intricate clothing design, which can then be used alongside each other to build up to a higher level of drawing clothing. This tutorial builds on the knowledge gained from my previous clothing tutorial, which was aimed at beginners.

    Drawing Folds In Clothing Step

This first step the line-art drawing, the underdrawing of the fabric/clothing and folds you plan to draw is the most important in this process. Here we need to think about how the underlying form impacts the shape of the clothing and folds.

We also need to sketch out placement of the main folds, so they are easy to return to later when you ready to render them.

I added a simple local color to this drawing.

Continuing to observe from step 1, I rendered out the shadows, trying my best to make sure they make sense for the form underneath the clothing.

We will cover each individual type of fold in a bit in this tutorial! For now, I want to go over some examples to give you an idea of the process.

Here, the highlights are added to make folds stand out. The focus is on planes that are hit by most light.

Here are the steps I will be using to draw folds in these examples:

Step one: Identify the form underneath, identify tension points, and types of folds, and all other areas of force applied to the folds . After this identification process, draw general shape and account for main folds

From this first step, I used a simple rendering technique of blocking in the local color, then shadows and then highlights. identify local color and paint it in. Because I wanted to give a three-dimensional feeling to the folds, I decided to shade them in using this type of rendering.

Step two: identify local color and paint it in

    Step three: paint in shadows

    Step four: paint in highlights

Examples Of Different Types Of Folds

I found a good listing of the types of folds in Bridgmans art book A Complete Guide to Drawing from Life. Bridgmans book is an excellent source and one I highly recommend, it is also not the easiest to understand.

I found many places online where Bridgmans section on folds is posted without context, and did not find that too helpful.

Below, I will be adding my own comments to the best way to remember and study each fold in hopes of making things easier to learn.

If you are contemplating if you should even study different folds or not, yes study them. Just draw each one a few times, it will take a day, but it will be time well spent in the effort to improve your drawings of folds in clothing. I definitely saw improvement in my overall drawing of folds after I spent time learning each type of fold.

Once you know them, it almost becomes a game to identify them on your reference, also forcing you to break down a complex folding fabric into simple parts, which in-turn makes the entire arrangement easier to draw.

It is important to note that different types of folds can, and often do, mix with one another. Therefore, the study of different types of folds is a departure point and not the destination to drawing folds in clothing and fabric.

Look at the different types and try to spot them in real life and picture reference as a start.

Tip On How To Draw A Jacket

A jacket is one of the basic yet extraordinary clothing items. It can be worn whether you are at work or even on a red carpet. That is why artists must know how to draw a jacket.

Now, a jacket can take various cuts, fabrics, and elements. It is fun to draw it according to your dream design. However, the most basic design always stands out and is famous in jackets.

Although it is complicated, I would make sure you get it through the most convenient and straightforward way. Let us get to work.

For this, I would go for a female jacket.

  • First, go to my first tip on anatomy. Make sure to draw it on the torso centerline.
  • Next up, draw the V-shaped neckline. Start the neckline from the shoulders and end on the button. To enhance this neckline, draw a horizontal V for the collar and lapel. You can experiment with various designs when drawing collars and lapels.
  • Next, make the outlines. At this stage, you can experiment with silhouettes and proportions. Make sure not to make it too tight and keep the anatomy in mind.
  • Now, draw some folds. This would give the jacket a more defined and realistic look. Draw the wrinkles around the elbow and waist.
  • You can draw some additional details. Draw the hems, buttons, emblems, or princess hems. You can decorate the jacket as you wish. Remember, this is the most basic way. You can bring in variations.

Using some more curved and straight lines, we will be adding the chest and waist of the person wearing these clothes.

We will also be drawing some pockets onto the jacket in this step. There will also be some lines drawn on the shirt underneath the jacket to show even more folds in the fabric.

Then, we will focus on some final details in the next step before bringing some color to this picture!

Learn The Human Anatomy In Order To Draw Clothes

How to draw Clothes & Wrinkles | Beginner Tutorial | DrawlikeaSir

The first and essential tip is to get into the anatomy before drawing clothes.

It is vital to learn deeply about the human bodys anatomy.

Know how to draw a body with its actual shape. Whether you are drawing from the mind, real-life figure, or reference picture, get the shapes right.

Yes, you might have seen those videos of artists making sketches with unusual bodies. Indeed, they look so beautiful.

However, they are just sketches in their budding stages. When it later comes to illustrators, they recreate the drawing with proper bodies with proper proportions.

You can learn anatomy from my free drawing course and/or from these free books on drawing.
