Drawing Anime & Manga Faces Viewed From Below Hard Angles
This tutorial is a bit advanced, but if you are ready for it, go for it. This tutorial explains how to draw faces from angles that you dont typically see in manga and anime.
One of those is the one where the viewpoint is below the chin, making the chin look big and other features like eyes, small.
The reason why you dont see these too much in the manga is that in manga art, the chin is usually very pointy, aesthetic, or downright beautiful and when you view that from below, you will have to draw the chin based on realism.
Its pretty hard to draw a chin that is pointy when viewed below. It just doesnt work, so in these instances, you cant draw so much in manga and anime style but have to incorporate realism to it.
Which also means that you have to get into the mature style of manga and anime heads.
Find The Widest Part Of Your Face
If the widest part of your face is your forehead, which slowly tapers down to a narrow jaw and angled chin, then you probably have a heart-shaped or an inverted triangle face. Youll get more insight on this in step 2.
If the widest part of your face is your cheekbone, chances are you have an oval, round, heart-shaped, or diamond-shaped face.
You have a pear or triangular face shape if your jaw is the widest part of your face.
If your forehead, cheekbones, and jaw are almost equal in width, you probably have a square, round, or oval-shaped face.
Finish Off Your Face Shape Drawing With Some Color
That brings us to the final step of your face shape drawing, and its the one where you get to have some coloring fun!
If you modeled this face after a real person, then you can use your various coloring tools and mediums to replicate their skin tone for your drawing.
If you dont want a more realistic image, you could always make it more stylistic with some bright and vibrant colors! You should really just let your creativity flow as you color this in.
Once you have chosen the color tones you want, you can have some fun picking art mediums.
Watercolor paints may be a good option as they are good for creating skin tones, but which other art tools are you thinking of using for this picture?

The Central Line Of The Face
When starting to put in the basic structure of the face, its useful to put in that line that runs down the middle of the face. Its worth keeping in mind that the way this line curves will vary between different faces. This models face, if you look at it in profile, is quite curved, so in the ¾ view we need to consider that. Other people have flatter faces.
Where To Place The Eyes
Well, we have a tendency to think the eyes are closer to the top of the head than the bottom because they are the highest facial feature. But thats not really the case.
As you can see, the eyes are just about halfway between the bottom of the jaw and the top of the head. There is a lot of head above the eyes, as any of us with a receding hairline know. But I skipped a step here how far apart should the eyes be? How big should they be?

Great idea to show skull & line drawing comparisonI found this useful in understanding the underlying form & volumes.
OK, this is extremely clear and direct. I read the tutorial and then I sketched and took notes from the tutorial in my sketch book, this helped a great deal as it confirmed areas I did or did not understand.Next I invented angles to confirm the knowledge. Stan, you did great, the tutorial brought me furthest along than any other reading of this subject to date. Your skill and clarity in communicating this is exceptional.
Wow bev, thanks for the warm compliments.
I like how you took notes and then actually applied the information. Very important to retain what youve learned.
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I have many drawing books, including those by Loomis, but none of them explained a clear method for drawing the head at various angles. Without this tutorial I would still be struggling so thanks again for the explanation.
I agree with Rochelle ideas, although reading many books which has no assistance to me.
Your explaination is very concise and easy to learn.
Thanks guys! Keep studying those Loomis books though. Theyre filled with great information.
Drawing Noses And Eyes Together
Once you learn the anatomy of the eye and how to draw it realistically, it is important to understand how to put two of them together along with other facial features like the nose. Here are some guidelines to remember:
- The space between the eyes is one eye width.
- Both eyes should be directly across from each other.
- If you draw a vertical line down from the corner of the eye, it will line up with the edge of the nose.
- Both eyes must be looking in the same direction. The pupil and iris must be the same in both.
- Place the catch light in the same place on both eyes .
1. Create a Line Drawing
Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a nose and eyes together. Notice how the vertical line drawn down from the corner of the eyes lines up with the edge of the nose. Place the eyes directly across from one another.
2. Apply Dark Tones, Fill in the Shadow Areas and Eyebrows
When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the darkest tones with a pencil.
The pupils of the eyes are the darkest areas. Fill in the tones of the shadow areas and the eyebrows. The eyebrows should be shaded in as a shape first, before the hairs are applied.
3. Blend and Apply Highlights
Blend with a stump or tortillion. Very little of the paper should be left white, even in the whites of the eyes. Use a kneaded eraser for the small highlights seen in the brows and patterns within the pupils.

Now Add Some Ears To Your Face Shape Drawing
We will be drawing some ears in this step of our guide on how to draw a face shape. The ears will begin from the curved line that you drew for the top of the head.
It will also start a little bit above the horizontal guiding line. These ears will be drawn with a curved line that has two bumps to it, and they will connect with the bottom oval of the face.
Find Out Your Face Length
If the length and width of your face are equal, with a rounded jaw, you mostly have a round face shape. An easy way of finding out your face length would be to draw a horizontal imaginary line
below the eyes and a vertical line from the top of your head to the chin. If the ratio of horizontal to vertical is one to one, then you probably have a round face.
Average faces are ones with greater length than width. So if the horizontal to vertical ratio is one to more than one, thats a sign of an average face shape. If the widest part of your face is your cheekbones and you have a round chin, then you mostly have an oval-shaped face.
And if you have a pointed chin along with the previously mentioned points, then its probably a heart-shaped or an inverted triangle face.
If the length of your face is noticeably longer than the width, you mostly have a long or oblong face shape. Your cheekbones, jaw, and forehead should all be equally wide along with a rounded jaw.

What Is The Most Attractive Face Shape
Several factors determine face shapes, and each face shape is beautiful in its own way. However, a study conducted at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia found that the heart-shaped face with a wide forehead and pointy chin is considered the most attractive of all.
The scientists analyzed the facial measurements from photos of 55 beautiful female models and quantified that the vertical distance between the eyes and cheekbones should be 13.1mm to be classified as attractive.
Generally, a slim face with high cheekbones, large eyes, and full lips are considered to be very attractive.
The Length Of Your Face
- Short: A simple way to determine the length of your face is to draw an imaginary line horizontally below the eyes and vertically from the top of your head through the nose and towards the chin. If the horizontal to vertical ratio is one to one, then you have a round face.
- Average: Average faces are usually longer than they are wide, so if the horizontal to vertical ratio is one to one and a half, thats the average shape. This is also what the majority of people have.
- Long: If you have a longer than average lower half, then its most likely that you have a long face. This means that the horizontal to vertical proportion is one to more than one and a half. You may fall into the oblong category.
Now that you know the various factors that will help you determine your face shape, lets check out the different types of face shapes, shall we?

Mapping The Face For Anime & Manga
A very good art tutorial on how to draw the manga head and face from different angles. Also, what is good about this video is that you will more about the planes of the face, like the placement of eyebrows.
The video is roughly 20 minutes long or short, but in that time frame, you are able to see three different angles being drawn in detail by Mike. And what I like about the video is that you can follow the drawing process while drawing yourself making the learning process that much easier.

Creating Illustrations Focused On Expressing Emotions
Understanding the basics gives you unlimited potential for stylizing your characters. Lets go back to the beginning of this tutorial where I showed you the basic geometrical construction. Modifying the proportions of those elements allows us to create stylized and believable faces.
Operating with simple geometric shapes also helps you to control the tilt of the head in perspective. I went for a cute character with big eyes and a round face. I increased the size of the middle box and made the half-cylinder shorter. In the next step, I draw a skull fitting those proportions and a full face on top of that.
For a genuine smile, I keep in mind to raise the eyebrows and overlap the lower lid with the cheek. Notice how the stretched mouth lifts the cheek and makes the shape appear rounder.

Measuring The Distance Between Features
For a realistic looking portrait, it is important that all the features are at the correct distance from each other. But everyones features are different for some the distance between eyes can be wider or the nose can be longer or shorter!
These features help make a face recognizable. Get the features right and you will be stunned by the results!
Did you try our three tricks for sketching a portrait? How did it go? Do share your experience with us in the comments below!
Reviewing The Generalized Locations Of Facial Features
- The eyes are found in the middle of the head.
- The corners of the inside of the eyes generally line up with the edges of the nose.
- The “mouth” line is about one-third below the “nose” line and the bottom of the chin. This line represents where the top lip meets the bottom lip.
- The inside portions of the pupils or the iris generally line up with the corners of the mouth.
- The ears are usually found between the “eye” line and the “nose” line, but extend up to the brow line.
When drawing faces, use these standards to help you get your facial proportions correct. Remember, you must look and study your subject. While these standards apply to most of us, they do not apply to all of us.

When drawing any kind of expression, the eyebrows can do most of the work. Exaggerating a the curves of your eyebrows can change a lot on the expression of your character. Remember, when sketching up and drawing, to try and exaggerate the expressions and your lines, it gives more personality and a different motion to your drawings.
Putting It All Together
Now that youve learned how to draw facial features from the eyes to the mouth, its time to put everything together into a portrait. Do not do this project before you have done the proper practice work. Go back and practice all of the facial features first.
And, before moving on to this demo, be sure to practice drawing hair. I covered this topic in another post, which you can find here.
Here are some tips for drawing portraits:
- When you want to draw facial features, start with the eyes. This helps create a connection with the viewer and starts to capture the personality of your subject.
- When you finish the eyes, move down and finish the nose, then the mouth. This is called the triangle of features.
- Allow the darkness of the hair to help create the lighter edge of the face. Placing tone behind the face reduces the chance of things looking outlined.
- When drawing hair, apply your pencil strokes going in the same direction as the hair growth.
- Always remember the five elements of shading with everything you draw.
1. Create a Line Drawing
Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a female face. Go one box at a time and be very careful with the shapes.
2. Apply the Darks and Start Building up the Hair
When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the darkest tones.
3. Blend and Lift

How To Draw Anime Basic Head
This video has a pretty nice take on the different angles of head and face, with a written explanation on what you should draw next and how its easy to follow along with the video while you practice drawing anime and manga head.
The artist also shows you how to draw anime and manga head from the side. So you will not only learn how to draw it from the front view but also from the side and from different angles.
The video is nicely paced and is slow enough to see how the hand moves along with the drawing.
How To Draw A Female Face Step By Step
Welcome to a new Wacom sketch lesson. Today we will learn how to draw a womans face. This – as we all know – can be a beautiful sight and is also one of my own favorites. Of course, all faces look slightly different, depending on their origin, age, number of ears, etc., not to mention the style of each artist. Sometimes even the same face looks completely different in the morning than it does in the evening.
In this step-by-step guide we will learn some basic guidelines that portrait, caricature, comic and anime artists all over the world have been using for many years when painting realistic faces. Of course, these are not mandatory rules and every artist can adapt and reinterpret them to their own style. With a task as challenging as the female face, it can be tremendously helpful to practice and keep this guide in mind.
In this course we will draw a female face from our imagination and learn some essential tricks and techniques to make it look realistic. We will start by constructing the head shape, then add the features, and finally give the face some fine-tuning and color. I hope you find the course inspiring, and that you will be able to use this approach for yourself in the future.
This course is mainly aimed at beginners, but an experienced artist may discover something new too. I’m also going to talk about the workflow on the computer with a graphic tablet and the advantages of digital devices. However, you can follow the course with pen and paper as well.
