The iris is the colored circular area of the eye and takes up a large portion of the part of the eyeball visible between the eyelids. While it is commonly believed to, the pupil does not sit right on the surface of the eyeball, but is actually recessed into the iris, under the surface of the translucent cornea. This is important to remember when drawing eyes from the side. Placing the pupil underneath the outer line of the eyeball will increase the realism in your drawing.

I like to draw whatevers on the left first because Im right-handed and I dont want to smudge my drawing. Thats why were starting with the darker, left part its not some important rule established by Da Vinci, no.

Tilt the pencil and fill in the sclera.

The light source is on the right, so the left corner will obviously be darker.

About The Shape Of Eyelids

how to draw faces, eyes, nose, mouth | tutorial

The eyes are not shaped like footballs or almonds. And yet, this is one of the most common mistakes made by students ;and for that matter, many how to draw eyes tutorials.

While its true that the opening between the lids tapers to a point on each side, that shape is also asymmetrical.

The Outer Boundaries: Look for the high point or apex of the curve of the upper lid and youll find it sits somewhat medially . This is because the form of the lid follows the path of the supraorbital margin, which is angled downward, laterally.

The Inner Boundaries:The outer and inner boundary of each eyelid echo one another, but they arent parallel. The inner boundaries appear less curved when the eyes are open because of perspective ; they arent rolled up or down over the eyeball as much as the outer boundaries, which makes the curvature appear less amplified from our angle of view.

How To Draw Closed Eyes Draw Wrinkles

To make the eyes look more real, you can add small wrinkles above the eyelid and draw the eyelid fold. Draw several diagonal lines from the eyelid towards the outer corner of the eye. A harder pencil is recommended for very fine lines.

In order to harmonize these wrinkles with the rest of the shading, you should blend the area. Either use a blending stump and wipe several times, or use a HB pencil and shade the area around the eyelid again.

Next, take your kneaded eraser and erase very fine lines in the same diagonal direction. These light lines should be implied where the light hits the eyes.

Cleaning Up And Finishing The Drawing

  • 1Erase the guidelines to clean up your drawing. Use either the eraser on your pencil or a block eraser to lift up any guide lines that arent a part of the characters face or head. Carefully work around any of the facial features youve drawn so you dont erase their lines too much. Continue erasing the rest of the guides on your drawing until all thats left is the face.XResearch source
  • If you drew your guide lines too dark, then they may not fully erase off of the paper.
  • Use a thin eraser to get in detailed areas, like the eyes or ears.
  • 2Give your character a fun hairstyle. Anime and manga characters can have a variety of hairstyles, so choose one that you think will look best on your character. Avoid drawing every single strand of hair and instead sketch the basic shape of the style onto your character. Work lightly in pencil so you can erase and make changes if you need to. Once you have a roughed-in shape for the hairstyle, erase any parts of the head that the hair covers so its not visible.XResearch source
  • Anime or manga hair is usually broken up into clumps that end in a point. Look at hairstyles of various characters to get ideas of how to style your characters hair.
  • Tip: Practice drawing different hairstyles on a piece of tracing paper over your drawing so you dont have to erase your character if you dont like the style you drew.

  • You dont have to add any additional details to your character if you dont want to.
  • Eyes From Different Angles

From other angles eyes might appear flat if drawn in a straight line. The front area of the face is a little bent and the eyes appear slanted.

The form of the eye changes when the pupil moves. Dont be afraid to break up the eye shape to make it dynamic. The pupil moves on a sphere, not on a straight plane.

Especially when drawing eyes from a ¾ view it is important to imagine the spherical space they move on. Keep the thickness of the eyelids in mind. Stylised approaches might leave out some anatomical details, but the shape should still act like the realistic eye in order to achieve a 3-dimensional result.

When the head is turned away in semi profile you might only see the tip of the eyebrow and eyelash. Turning it more reveals there is no space between eye and eye bridge. This indicates a strong change of direction to where the head is facing before it turns into a full profile.

Key Facts About The Geometry Of The Eye

how to draw a male face, eyes, nose, mouth | tutorial

Start by getting a handle on the underlying shape behind the visible eye. Youre not drawing what you see, youre drawing behind the object, says illustrator and drawing instructor Lucas Elliott. Youre not just drawing the eye itself, but youre drawing the actual ocular orb and then everything on top of it: the eyelid, the eyelashes, the eyebrows.

    The eyeball is a sphere.

To perfect the look of an eye, visualize the sphere of the eyeball. This will help you understand how each aspect of the eye is connected spatially, regardless of what is actually visible once you add other elements of a characters face. The skin surrounding the eye, the eyelid, the eyelashes, the tear ducts, and more it all wraps around the ocular orb. What we typically think of as the eye shape is actually the shape of the upper and lower eyelid and how they cover the eye socket.

A Simple Approach To Drawing A Face

Some may find the Loomis Method a little cumbersome for drawing. Luckily, there is a simpler approach. This approach borrows ideas from the Loomis Method, but simplifies a few of the steps. This formula should be used to help you see and compare. In each stage of the formula, analyze each feature and draw what you see. The result will be a representational portrait of the person you are drawing with all of the features in the right place.

Drawing a portrait is very much like drawing any other subject matter. You have to closely observe the subject in order to draw it accurately. Of course portrait drawing is especially delicate because the goal is to make the portrait resemble the subject closely.

If you know the person, the pressure to produce accuracy can be daunting. But every artist, no matter what their skill level, should take heart. Even the most experienced and well-known portrait artists are presented with challenges. Consider these two quotes from one of the best portrait painters of all time, John Singer Sargent…

    âEvery time I paint a portrait, I lose a friend.â

âA portrait is a painting in which something is wrong with the mouth.â

Most of us can relate with both of these quotes. Weâve all felt the pressure when drawing or painting a portrait to make it look exactly like our subject – especially when that subject is a friend. For some of us, the pressure is so great, we avoid portraits all together.

    • The eyes are found in the middle of the head.
    • The corners of the inside of the eyes generally line up with the edges of the nose.

    • The inside portions of the pupils or the iris generally line up with the corners of the mouth.
    • The ears are usually found between the “eye” line and the “nose” line, but extend up to the brow line.
