Whether youre drawing anatomy or preparing for Halloween, learning to draw skulls is a practice in proportion. Start with a simple circle and make a few faint guidelines that help you place the jawline, teeth, and eye sockets. Once you draw these outlines, give your skull definition by shading in the shadows.

Drawing Male And Female Mouths / Lips

Drawing a mouth can be a challenge, but you can draw realistic lips when you break the process into simple steps. Follow along to create a full, realistic mouth and avoid making simple mistakes, like defining hard edges, that beginning artists tend to make.

When studying the mouth, you will notice the upper lip is usually smaller and will appear darker than the bottom lip. It creates an M shape.

There are differences between male and female lips. Female mouths are much more defined and seem fuller and shinier. The edges of male lips are more subtle and are described by the shadows around them more than the edges themselves.

Drawing Lips | Female

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of female lips.

2. Apply the Dark Patterns

When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the dark patterns of the lips with a pencil.

Make the upper lip darker than the bottom one. This is because the upper lip angles in, and the bottom lip angles out.

3. Blend Tones and Light Highlights

Blend the tones smooth with a tortillion. Be sure to create the tones of the skin around the lips so that they look realistic. Use a kneaded eraser to lift the bright highlights of the lower lip to make them look moist and shiny.

Drawing Lips | Male

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of male lips.

2. Add Dark Tones

3. Blend and Lift

Add The Third Dimension

Right now your drawing is still quite flat. There is no depth to the eye and everything seems to be on one single plane.

But as we’ve learned above, there is a lot of shape to an eye. The eyeball is round and the areas around it are a bit sunken in the sockets. The cornea protrudes and so do the eyebrows.

Detailing Your Skull Sketch

Whip out yet another and even darker pencil for this next step. This is where things become exciting and a little more tricky. Some say that beauty is in the details, and in this case, it is true.

  • In order to turn the circles or ovals into teeth that look like teeth, take your pencil and draw over each of the circles to give them some detail.
  • The eye sockets will have jagged, bent, or curved lines instead of perfectly rounded shapes. This is an important step if you are trying to draw a realistic skull.
  • In order to draw the eyes, nose, and cheeks in more detail, you can add in some shading with darker colors. This makes them more distinct against the outline of the skull.
  • If the skull is an old skull, it might have a few indents, cracks, or scratches over the surface of it. This is a great detail to add for realism.

How to Draw an Eye from the Side | #StayHome and Draw #WithMe

Draw a line down the center of this oval. This will give you the center of the facethe location of the nose line, the lip and chin center.

Next, divide the length of the oval into three fairly equal parts, as pictured below.

The first third will be the location of the line of the eyebrows, the second third the base line of the nose. Of the top third, the upper third of that will be the line of the hair. See this in the picture below.

The upper third of the center third you will mark as the location of the eyes. The upper third of the lower third will be the location of the mouth.

As a rule the width of the head is two-thirds that of its length. As you can see in the picture below. We turned the head on its side and then placed it on top of a head that was held uprightand the sideways head goes down 2 thirds the length of the upright head.

The ears will equal the center third length of the headfrom the top 1/3 line to the bottom 1/3 lines . The top starts on the line horizontal with the eyebrows, the base reaching to the nose, or midway between the nose and the upper lip in some individualsin others more or less than the one-third length. See the picture below.

The eyebrows cover two-thirds of the width of the foreheadbut they vary in size from person to person so there isnt an exact measurement for them.

The eye is equal to a third of the center third in width. SoFirst separate the width of the head into 3 equal parts like I did below.

Defining The Jaw And Teeth

Next, we are going to add more definition to the . There are a few things to remember,

  • The bottom of the jaw is a separate bone from the top of the head
  • The jaw can move, but the rest of the head is completely stationary
  • The jaw attaches to the skull via a hinge like connection
  • This hinge allows the jaw to open and close
  • The jaw is able to move in other directions but is quite limited in range

Now as you may notice in the image above, the jaw has a cavity. That cavity is the area behind the teeth. Beyond this, the jaw turns upward once again, this is where the jaw attaches to the top of the skull allowing for the movement we have in our jaw.

Continuing keeping both the heads proportionally similar, we need to bring over a new line that will indicate where the bottom of the teeth is sitting on our skull. In this view, the shape of the jaw is a bit different.

Our last step is to indicate the position of the teeth. Using our we can see where we put the teeth on the side view of our skull, and place them similarly on the front view.

Learning how to draw a skull is really important if you want to draw realistic-looking faces. So, just keep practicing until you get it right ?

Because if youre serious about drawing characters or portraits, this is one of the best ways to develop as an artist!

And, once youve learned how to draw a skull, why not take your art skills further and learn how to draw facial features?

Generic Proportions Of The Eye Area

In this article I am only mentioning the very basics of facial proportions, rather than every single line-up of every detail of the eye with other facial features. Remember that these guidelines are for a generic face and they will differ slightly from subject to subject.

But it’s still helpful to have a basic idea of the rough position of the eyes when beginning a drawing. And itll come in super handy when you notice something is off in your sketch, but you can’t quite figure out what exactly it is .

Generic proportions of the eyes relative to other parts of the human face.

In an adult human the eyes are usually either on or slightly above the vertical middle of the head. They sit a little lower on children. We tend to draw them much too high, because we confuse the entire head with just the facial area .

In many cases both eyes are around one eye-width apart and a bit less than an eye-width away from the sides of the head.

The corners of the mouth tend to line up with either the inner edge of the iris or the pupil. In a side-view its the front of the cornea, as seen above.

And finally, the cornea would be slightly angled, if seen from the side. However, this is a point youll only need to remember for a very large or very detailed drawing, in a rough sketch it will hardly be noticeable.

Armed with this new knowledge lets draw some eyes, step by step.

Drawing A Male Side View Face With A Lightly Open Mouth

For a lightly open mouth draw the jaw lower down with just a tiny bit of the top row of teeth showing.

For a tutorial on drawing teeth see:

In the above example you can see roughly how much lower down you should draw the jaw in comparison to the closed state of the mouth.

Also keep in mind that the jaw does not simply drop down like an elevator but also somewhat pivots downwards. This means that the angle you draw it on should also change slightly to take this into account.

For a content expression draw eyebrow raised with the eye completely closed. Draw the mouth just a tiny bit wider with a bit more of a curve like a light smile.

One thing to note about drawing the eye in this type of an expression is that it will be somewhat squinted. This means that you position it slightly higher up than if it was closed in a more relaxed state.

In the above example you can see the basic proportions for drawing an anime face.

Draw the eye below the vertical halfway point of the head, draw the nose roughly between that and the chin, draw the bottom lip roughly between the chin and the nose with the mouth slightly above it. Draw the ears starting from the top of the yes to roughly the bottom of the nose.

Please note that these are only guidelines for a more common anime look. The proportions of anime faces can change based on character type and style variations.

Identifying And Drawing The Contours Of The Eye

We’ll start this drawing in the same way that we began the last. We’ll first evaluate the contour lines or outlines of the eye. We’ll look closely and study the angles and curvature of each of the lines that should be included.

We’ll also look for spacial relationships between the “whites” of the eyes, the pupil, and the eyelids. By making comparisons, we can be more accurate with our initial marks.

Draw A Vertical Line From The Center Of The Second Circle

Draw a vertical line from the center of the second circle and another line that touches the first circle and connects to around 3 times the diameter of the second circle on the vertical line.

    See the below picture.

We have drawn another horizontal line from the right of the first circle down to mark the connection of nose to the lips.

Note: The slanted line from circle 1 to the verticle line does not start exactly from the side of the circle. We can see the tip of the nose a little projected, thats more attractive.

HOW TO DRAW CARTOON EYES in 3 Different Views! Front, Side And 3/4 Tutorial

    1. Look at the eyes that you are trying to draw – I know – this tip seems pretty obvious. But many people try to draw what they think they see, rather than what they actually see. Look at the shapes, lines and values and do your best to copy that info on your paper. Don’t think about drawing eyes, think about drawing shapes, lines, and values.

    2. Remember that every eye is different – No two eyes will ever look the same.

    3. Eyes are their own unique shape – Eyes are NOT ovals and eyes are NOT football shapes. They have their own unique shape that you must recognize.

    4. Eyes have a full range of value – Most anything that you draw or paint should incorporate a full range of value. Eyes are no different. If you need to use a value scale to ensure that you have used a full range of value – then do it. The darkest darks and the lightest lights should all be there.

This lesson explored drawing a realistic eye with graphite pencils. And while many of the concepts that we covered here carry over to other drawing mediums, it may be helpful to see how this process is slightly different when a different drawing or painting medium is used.

Proportions Of The Face And Head : Three

Draw the head as an oval and then divide the length of the oval into three fairly equal parts, as pictured below.

Now draw a convex line down the first third of the oval and then do it again on the other side, as pictured below.

The ear will be within the middle third area, withing the last area behind the convex line.the ear is shaped like the letter C.

The simplest method of depicting the ear is with the capital letter C, and the capital letter S inset therein, to suggest the interior of the ear, as seen below.

From this simple form you can easily and certainly develop the ear to a more natural picture of that anatomical feature. However, for cartoon and caricature purposes the C-S design, with variations, will be practical.

There are two distinct forms of the ear the C and the triangle shape. Other ears are but variations or combinations of these two forms.

All designs of the curvatures within the ear surface seem to form more or less distinctly the letter S. In most cases the lower half of the S is smaller, especially in the case of the triangle shaped ear.

The ear is large in the kindly individual, and usually small in the mean, violent person. An example of this is seen in the case of Abraham Lincoln, whose ears were large, and, on the other extreme, in the prize fighter, who usually has a small, cauliflowered ear, though this, like all rules, has its exceptions.

The nose at this view can be expressed in a triangular shape, with the point at the top.

How To Draw And Animate The Human Figure Walking Or Running Huge Guide And Tutorial

If you want to learn how to animate, one of the first things you will need to learn how to draw is the animated walk. You must become skilled in this before mastering running. The movement of the limbs and torso give the appearance of walking, and you must get it just right to form that illusion. The movement of the lower limbs affects the torso as well as the arms. The arms and shoulders swing is rhythm with the legs to maintain the equilibrium of the person. When you, as an artist, understand the basic facts of the movement of the human figure, you will then be ready to understand the movement of animals as well.

To start, we are just going to focus on the movement of the legs. Imagine now that the person you are drawing is walking. The body in the air, about thirty inches above the ground, is moving forward. Attached to this figure are the legs, alternately swinging and supporting the body in its position above the ground. Further to simplify our study, we will, at first, consider the mechanism of one limb only.

A movement of the body in walking can be seen turning from side to side as it swings in rhythm with the upper limbs while they alternately swing forward and backward. It is a movement that animators do not always think about, since only an accomplished animator can imagine movement clearly enough to recreate it. To describe the movement better we will consider it visually.
