Color Your Graffiti Sketch

To make the coloring look more complex, I would always recommend to drawing gradients.

In this case, I colored the whole graffiti in one big gradient.

If you want to make your drawing to look even more complex, you will have to add a different gradient to each letter.

Step 4.1 Which Colors Should I Use?

In general, I recommend using complementary colors for either:

  • Foreground and background
  • Fill-ins and 3D blocks

If you want to use more colors, you should use colors of the same color shade.

Glossary

  • Complementary colors: colors that are positioned opposite to each other on a color wheel
  • Adobe Color CC is an example of a color wheel. Colors are placed on a circle based on a color theory. You can also use the Adobe Color CC color wheel as a tool to choose colors.

Step 4.2 Color theory

Well done color combinations are the basis of good fill-ins and coloring graffiti.

Using gradients is the secret of good coloring. Note that the gradient of the fill in is usually done by choosing 2-4 shades of one color.

The easiest way to find color combinations, is by going to the following website com/

You will find a color wheel there. Most of the color theories are based on color wheels. They just defer a bit from each other.

The strongest color contrast is known as complementary contrast.

So, just choose complementary in the dropdown menu in the top left of the website and adjust the wheel to find your preferred color combination.

So if you are a beginner there here is some ideas for you that should you start with your first graffiti.

Add Shadows And Highlights To Your Graffiti Drawing

How to draw graffiti – Graffiti Letters ABC step by step

The final step is to add some shadows and highlights. Again, lots of choices here. You can use black and white colored pencils for this. The colored pencils lay on top of the marker nicely and shows up well.

Below is what my final drawing looks like. I added some little specks in the white areas to break it up a bit and because I dropped one of the markers on my page which left a couple of dots.

Happy accidents, as Bob Ross always said. It turned out ok, but I should have made the inside of the letters purple instead of black, or added more black around the edges.

Draw Graffiti On Paper

Generally we have seen that the graffiti are used in the public domain appearance, and that is why they are most often drawn on the walls so that they could easily grab the attention of the people.

Well other than that traditional way of drawing the graffiti you may also draw the graffiti on the paper for that you just need to have a paper, pencil, outliner and the colors.

Take a piece of the paper and start with writing some letters on that and then you may extend it further just like any other part of the drawing. What is important with the graffiti is that it is known by its brightening outlook so make sure you give a good design to the graffiti and later fill it with the colors.

When drawing the graffiti on the paper start with some simple ideas since drawing the graffiti on paper requires much efforts and the size of the shape should also be kept in the mind

Drawing The 3d Blocks

One way of drawing 3D graffiti blocks is choosing a vanishing point.

This means choosing a point below the graffiti where all the 3D blocks lead to, as is shown in the picture below.

Next, choose how big the blocks should be. In this case, I selected 1,5cm in length.

After, take a ruler* and draw a 1.5cm long line from every corner of the graffiti letters to the vanishing point. Connect the lines parallel to the graffiti outline. The results are 3D blocks.

Fill the blocks with black color. If you want to create more complex 3D blocks, you can add light spots in the middle of the 3D block and fade the color to dark.

Step 5.1: Different Types of Coloring for 3D Blocks

If you make a gradient parallel to the outline, you will usually start from a brighter color and fade to a darker color in the back. The image above shows a gradient in blocks with additional parallel lines to the outline.

There are three ways to design the parallel gradient blocks.

  • Color blocks
  • Color blocks with lines
  • A fading
  • Another fancy design for 3D-blocks is rounded block coloring on each block area, as is shown in the image above. Additionally, there can be a fading from bright in the middle to dark on the sidelines

How To Draw Graffiti Letters Step

    I created a graffiti app for Android-smartphones.

In this app I just want to focus on how to draw graffiti letters step-by-step and the step-by-step drawing process of graffiti, like seen in the example next to this text.

There is a tutorial for every letter of the alphabet.

So, you just have to grab a sheet of paper, a pencil and markers, and follow the instructions step-by-step.

It will help you to learn every step and give you an idea of how to design a graffiti on your own.

The creation process of a graffiti piece usually starts with a tag/handstyle. The letters are constructed around the tag.

Constructing a letter is quite similar. The following steps describe the steps shown in the image above.

  • Step: Start just with lines
  • Step: add blocks around the lines
  • Step: style the blocks by adding serifs and enlarging elements of the letter
  • Step: add a gradient fill-in
  • Step: add blocks to make the graffiti look 3D
  • Step: add the keyline, bubbles as background effect and highlights on top of the fill-in
  • Event though the design process is not exactly the same every time. You can use it as a guideline and vary fill-in, backgrounds, the type of 3D-effect, shadows etcetera etcetera.

    Drawing A Graffiti Background

After giving it some thought, I decided to go back in with black and fill in the enclosed areas of my letters. I wasnt sure if I wanted to use black or purple for the insides. I went with the black.

For the background cool colors were used. Because this is a graffiti lesson for beginners, I kept the background pretty simple. There are an endless number of options for the background. From very simple to extremely complex.

Have some fun with it and be creative. The more you practice, the more creative you will be.

You can make your graffiti look more complex by adding shapes and light spots above the fill-in.

Common shapes are bubbles, rectangles, arrows, reflections and outlines of shapes.

Usually, these are colored in a darker color shade of the color used for the fill-in.

    I chose the word Ether

Attention: If you use markers, you should probably use a cutting mat like this one*. If you just write on paper, your marker will write through the paper on your desk!

Side note: If you search for a cutting mat* on Amazon, please consider reading the bad reviews. If you find a review about bad oder coming from the mat there, do not buy this particular product. You cannot get rid of this smell. I also did not pay attention to it, when I bought my first cutting mat and I regretted that decision.

  • Write down the name in pencil or chalk. Write in print, rather than cursive, and use an erasable writing tool, since youll need to manipulate the letters.
  • Turn the letters into blocks or bubbles. Draw around the original letters to create a larger 2-D sketch of the name.
  • Connect some of the letters.

Writing Tags Like Doing A Dance:

So now you have a basic understanding of letter structure, its time to share with you the most important secret to style.

An artist once, described this perfectly by saying how writing a tag, the simplest form of graffiti, is like doing a dance. Often when people start their style looks really deliberate and forced.

The reason graffiti appeals to the human eye is because the letters have energy and movement that resemble life and this evokes emotion in the viewer.

This is why the use of arrows is common in graffiti they are a symbol of direction. So it figures that if the symbols we call letters could really move, they would have arrows to indicate their direction.

The movement in your letters also comes from the way theyre painted. Unlike many other methods of drawing or painting when you do graffiti, you use your whole body. When you sketch your outline on the wall with spray paint, you stretch and sweep your arms, you lean, you bend your knees. Also, due to its inherently illegal nature, graffiti has traditionally been painted at speed, and this is why the lines and strokes in graffiti look so dynamic and fluid.

Remember when drawing, your letters have to give the impression of movement and life.

Here is an example of how a simple letter can evolve to have more character.

    Trace Your Graffiti Tag

How to draw graffiti – Graffiti Letters STU step by step

If you used a marker before, you will probably see the graffiti tag through the piece of paper to trace it. So, your first task is it to trace the edges of the lines with a pencil.

However, leave a little bit of space between the edge od the marker and your new pencil line so the letter gets bigger.

The result should look like the image shown below. This is not that bad, but we want to improve it.
