How To Draw Grass Ground And Rocks

When you draw a creature, an animal or a fantastic being, the background is not that important. However, the creature still needs something to put their feet onsome kind of ground. It’s not the most important element of the picture, of course, but if you gloss over it, it may make the whole illustration look incomplete. And if you pay more attention to it, your picture will certainly benefit from it!

There are many types of ground you can use for your drawing. In this tutorial we’ll take a close look at simple dirt, a grass field, a dry land , and rocky ground.

Draw The First Blades Of Grass

In order to draw realistic grass, the first step is pretty straightforward. You can start by drawing lines that resemble a few blades of grass. In this example, Im using an HB pencil. Similar to how you would draw hair, draw the blades in the direction they would naturally grow. Now, you can start from the bottom and make an upstroke for a tapered effect, with the base slightly wider than the tip. Alternatively, you can make upstrokes as well as downstrokes. I did a little bit of both here.

Next, draw a few more blades of grass going in the opposite direction. Give slight variations to the length of your grass blades. Additionally, draw some grass blades close together and draw others farther apart.

Go back over the row of grass blades just drawn and draw additional grass blades. Draw them similar in height and direction to what you drew previously. A big part of drawing realistic grass is building up the volume in layers.

Finish The Line Drawing

Finally add another pair of blades below the previous one to finish the basic outline of the grass clump.

Afterwards make sure that you are happy with the way all of the blades are placed and trace over your lines with a black pen or marker. If you dont have one handy just darken them with the pencil.

    Use A Variety Of Marks

Since your nature drawing will include all kinds of natural objects, it will help combine pen and ink techniques. There can be rocks, trees, mountains, water, plants, and anything else imagined. Dont just stick with a single type of mark method since these sketching tricks look better if mixed within your scenery. It also may not look appropriate to particular objects in your picture, making them look less realistic.

How to Create Contrast with Your Drawing

If you are drawing anything outside, you realize that contrast will play a significant role in your picture. Its not going to be the perfect pretty Hollywood picture that you see where everything is in perfect focus. There will be days where the sun is shining very bright. You can counter this by wearing sunglasses, but dont forget that the contrast between light and dark in your picture needs to be followed.

To achieve this, you should use fineliner pens that come in different colors to have areas with darker lines in some areas and lighter lines for drawing a background or things very far away. It will look a bit odd at first. However, when you add ink to color, it will be easier to color due to the difference in light Vs. dark in your drawing.

    Placing Barns In The Landscape

How To Draw Realistic Landscapes With Buildings – Trees – Grass – Skies in Graphite Pencil

Here we have two versions of a scene with the same elements: a barn, a silo and a tree sitting in a field of grass. The first is rendered fairly well, but does nothing for the viewer. There is nothing going on, no story to draw the viewer’s interest. The placement of the main elements and the uninteresting field add up to a monotonous picture. The barn is fine, but it needs help.

In the second version, the barn has been repositioned. A simple sky, a background of trees, a plowed field, fence posts and grazing sheep all add interest. Note that the plowed field, the posts, and the angle of the grazing field all point the way back to the barn. The barn is not overpowering, but it is still an important part of a picture that has a story to tell.

    How To Draw Summer Grass

In todays tutorial, I want to show you my favorite way to draw grass. Ill show you step-by-step how to draw summer grass using the direct method of drawing, and blending by layering to create lush, green grass.

Im excerpting this tutorial from the new in-depth tutorial from Ann Kullberg,; Grazing Horses.

The drawing is on Bristol vellum, and I used Prismacolor Premier Soft Core pencils, but you can use any type of paper and any brand of pencils. The color names will differ, but you can easily match colors brand-to-brand by using online color charts.

    Lift Highlights In The Grass

Its entirely possible that, with all of the layering you have done up to this point, you have marked over much of the highlighted areas of grass. To rectify this, use a kneaded erasers wedge edge to lift some highlights out of the grass. Look for any faint areas of highlights and use an upward swoop of the eraser to make them brighter. In between your swoops, keep reshaping your eraser to make a new edge with less graphite accumulation. This will make it easier to lift new grass highlights.

How to draw grass using pastel pencils

Use a 2H or HB pencil to further develop the areas where highlights were lifted. This just means you will reshape and touch up those areas so theres more of a defined edge to some of the highlighted blades. You can also draw a few thin blades here and there with swift upstrokes of your pencil.

Alternate between an HB and a 2B pencil to shade and shape the negative space around the grass blades, developing the thickness and volume you desire. Use the 2B pencil to apply the final layers of shadow in between the grass and especially near the base of the grass where it meets the ground.

Use a kneaded or regular eraser to clean up any smudges on the paper at the bottom of the grass or anywhere else around it. Of course, if we were drawing an entire field of grass, we would keep going, as the grass would not abruptly end. However, for the purposes of our practice tutorial, we can stop here. How To Begin Ink Drawings Of Grass And Weeds

This is very simple to pull off when drawing short grass. You are starting from the bottom of a grass strand and swiping the line upward. This is repeated several hundred to thousands of times. Longer grass is nearly the same, except you need to plot out what the overall flow is leaning in sections. Some areas should be leaning to the left, while other sections can lean more to the right.

This variation is which way they lean gives a sense of flow or movement. If all the grass is leaning in one direction is might give the impression there is high wind. For anything in the distance, you also have to reduce the amount of detail. Use less pronounced strokes and light scratches that are decreased in size. Youll need to use a very fine ink pen for this that is perhaps a light gray color rather than black.

Dry weed and straw need to look stiff, with bent fronds peppering an area. Only the final coloring will help give a light tan color that dry grass shows. These can be sparse and lightened to simulate distance using a gray pencil for sections in the distance.

Varieties And Differences In Ground Cover

Take a good look at nature, and youll notice that different kinds of grasses grow naturally. Some grass next to trees grows longer than meadow grass. There can be patches of grass with different textures due to the varieties of grass that grow there. Collect lots of pictures of locations that you enjoy looking at that contain grass variants. These can be added to inspire your landscape.

If you are drawing a real location, take many pictures so you can draw it at home. If you like drawing in nature, this allows you more time to take in detail you might not have noticed before.

    A simple pencil stroke

At the most basic level, drawing grass is just a mark on the paper. Well perhaps two marks, one up and one down. As you start the pencil stroke, the pressure is firm and as you move up, the pressure is lifted so when you lift the pencil from the paper the line is tapered. As you make the mark on the downward stroke, it starts with a heavier pressure and is tapered at the bottom. This vertical rocking motion of up/down pencil strokes is all it takes. As you are creating these up/down marks, you are actually drawing the area or shadow between the blades. The white area left is the actual blades of grass. This technique is called negative drawing.

PracticePractice drawing various textures to depict grass. Here are a few tips:

    • Vary the length of the grass. Unless the grass is from a manicured urban lawn, the grass will not be the same length. Varying the length will add interest
    • A slight arch with the pencil stroke will keep the grass from looking stiff and unnatural.
    • Add a variety of weeds including broad leaf plants. Again this will add interest to your scene.
    • Create light, wispy grass with lighter pencil strokes.
    • For a thicker carpet of grass, use shorter, firmer pencil stroke.
    • For large sections of grass, use a 4H or 2H chisel point lead and layer a light tone over the area. This will add uniformity.

Lay Down Basic Green Colors In Even Layers

Drawing Sunlit Grass in Colored Pencil-Demo

Choose two to four shades of green in a range of values and sharpen each pencil as much as possible. Then start layering your color on the paper, ideally working from a photograph to have an idea of where your lights and darks will go.

You want these initial layers to be as smooth and even as possible, with no visible pencil strokes. Most experts recommend horizontal oval-shaped or circular strokes, since those have no starting or stopping points.

Start with light to medium-light pressure. The lighter the pressure you use, the more layers you may have to draw. Be careful not to use such heavy pressure that you crush or press down the tooth of the paper, though. That will make it very difficult to add additional color.

The goal for this first layer is to have three distinct sections of different valueslight, medium, and darkwith very little overlap between them.

    Here was my base layer:

If you want, you can blend this layer with odorless mineral spirits when youre finished. I blended the left side and left the right unblended, so you can see how it changes the final drawing. If you do decide to blend, let the paper dry completely before starting the next step.

    Materials Used For This Drawing

Here is a list of the materials I am using for this drawing.

If you dont have some of these materials, thats okay. You can still make do with a regular pencil and eraser, as long as you just get started!

If you wish to purchase any of these materials, they can be found at your local art store, or you can buy them using the links below.

    Darken Your Colors And Values

For the second step, use the same colors to add a second layer over the top of the first one. Start to overlap your colors so your sections dont feel quite as distinct.

NOTE: If you blend with odorless mineral spirits, you may find the next layer goes onto the paper more easily and is darker than the first layers. The second layers of color for this demo piece were markedly darker when applied over blended color than over unblended.

You may blend again at the end of this step. If you do blend throughout the drawing, use less odorless mineral spirits with each step. The more pigment on the paper, the less solvent you should use, or you could accidentally life the color off the paper.
