The Secret To Drawing A Hand

Hands and feet drawing tutorial

Are you one of those people that absolutely loathes drawing hands? Do you hide the hands in pockets or behind the behind the person’s back? There’s no reason to approach drawing hands like that. It’s true that most people believe that hands are some of the hardest things to draw. NOT SO!

I’ll be honest, drawing hands is difficult when you don’t know what to look for. But when you know how to look for specific shapes, they are a lot easier to draw. Drawing hands, or anything else for that matter is as easy as drawing some simple shapes. I’m talking square and triangle simple.

The Hands And Feet : How To Draw Them

Particular attention should be given to a study of the hands, since this is the stumbling block over which most artists fall. Study the accompanying plates carefully, and sketch the bones of the handnot once, but several times. Then, when you have become fairly familiar with the bones, practice drawing the skeleton hand each day, say for an hour.

When you have learned the skeleton construction, then learn to draw the hand by the block method, described in another lesson.

This method is well to use, for after you have blocked in the hand in the desired pose, you can develop the details more quickly and more correctly.

Always Use A Reference

Its important to use reference images, no matter your illustration skill level. Whether you look at a photo, take pictures of your own hand, or ask a friend to model different hand gestures, have a guide at your side. There will always be something unexpected and different, even if youve drawn them a million times, says Daviscourt.

How To Draw Anime Hands Step By Step

How to draw Hands and Feet [Tutorial]

Enough theory! Let’s see how to draw anime hands in every pose! For this exercise, it’s good to use a reference. In fact, to learn how to draw hands, you need to practice a lotnot from imagination and guessing, but by analysis of the real thing. This constant exposure to the structure of a real hand will help you develop an intuition, and you’ll start “feeling” the difference between a correct pose and an incorrect one.

Here I used this from Envato Elements.

Adding Details To The Hands

There are lots of small details that you can add to your characters hands.

If you want to give more expression to your hands, you can do that by adding details.

The poses of the hands will already help you with conveying an emotion, but the details will add so much more to that!

Weve already done some nails and an extra line here and there, but lets go over each detail that you can do!

Drawing Hair in the Hands

We always have some hair on our fingers and the back of our hands.

This is usually more noticeable in men.

So if youre drawing a male character that happens to be very hairy, dont forget to add some of it on their hands.

Go simple or exaggerate with all the hand hair!

Its your character and you know them better than anyone.

Experiment a lot and see what works best. And, as always, have fun!

Drawing Hand Wrinkles

This is all about taste.

For me, I usually leave these ones out, but you might prefer to have a more realistic feel or very stylized.

When you look at your hands, the knuckles have some wrinkles.

You can add them to your drawings!

They fit very well if youre drawing either men or older people, where these are more noticeable.

Try different weights on your lines, to give them more or less strength.

Lets say your character is someone who works very hard, especially with their hands.

Then, these wrinkles can be very noticeable, to convey this idea better!

Drawing Fingernails

People have different fingernail types, so explore that in your drawings.

Find The Joints For Each Finger

Now that we have all 4 fingers drawn, its time to locate each joint. Add 2 more ticks on the middle finger, each roughly 1 quarter of the way down. Using these ticks, draw 2 more curves. We now have reference points for joint placement! Wasnt so bad, was it? Please note that these are only loose measurements for simplicity sake.

Straight Lines Vs Curves

The outside of the hand is usually straighter and harder so that hands can be used for combat and self-defense, while the inside of the hand is soft in order to hold tools and touch things.

Summarising the shapes of the hand with bold straight and curved lines can make hand movements more dynamic and expressive.

The more you see the palm side of the hand the softer the shapes become.

Sometimes it can vary depending on the angle and hand shape.

How to Draw Feet

Hands in particular are one of the most expressive part of the body, essential to body language, so very important in life drawing. One of the best advice I read in a drawing book was to draw hands and feet as much as you can until you feel comfortable with it. Draw them everyday, and do so for a long time.

The sky is the limit for stylizing hands, says Daviscourt. Remember that realistic hand drawings are just one way to go. A hand drawn in the style of comic art, manga, anime characters, or cartoon hands will each bring its own flavor and personality to the table.

The Book Of A Hundred Hands

Bridgman is a legend in the art community and The Book of a Hundred Hands is one of the best books you can get on this subject.

Yes this is a fairly old book but its not just a gallery of hand drawings. Bridgman goes into great detail explaining the behavior, size, shape, and structure of a human hand.

This book works like a hundred hand challenge where youre tasked with the role of drawing 100 different hands in different positions. It reads just like any other tutorial guide except it doesnt treat the reader like a complete beginner.

Because of this you probably do want some prior experience with drawing. It may not come easy but these exercises will help you improve.

And by the end youll be amazed at how much Bridgman understood to be able to draw and fully explain the details in this book.

Create The Illusion Of A Light Source

How to draw bodies, hands and feet

We see objects and make sense of the world around us based on the light. It is the light that informs us of the form of the objects that we see. Every drawing needs to have a defined light source. We can create the illusion of light through our use of value, or the darkness or lightness of a color.

The light source is defined by factors that are related to value. On the side of the hand that receives the light source, we will see highlights which are communicated by tints . Areas that protrude will likely be areas of highlight.

On the opposite side of the light source, we will see shadows. These areas will be communicated through darker values. Areas that recede will likely be areas of shadow.

Make sure to include a full range a value when you draw hands. Remember, it is the value that tells the viewer about the form of the hand.

Nothing drives me crazier than to see a student draw a figure and hide the hands! There’s no need for that! It’s not hard to draw hands!

How To Draw Kawaii Hands

This week I focused on drawing many kinds of hands and placing them in different positions.

The challenge was to make the two hands match. I am left-handed, so my natural tendency is to draw the left hand first. However, it would be much easier to draw the right hand first , because then I can see the hand I already drew and can make the other hand match it.

Below are a few examples of kawaii hands.

Feel free to download and use the hand images below for your reference! You may find that it is difficult to use the measurement system for certain gestures. In this case, eye the approximate measurements and remember to implement the use of curved lines when drawing fingers. If you practice enough, you should be able to sketch them without the use of guidelines or better yet, be able to visualize and draw any gesture! Differences Between Masculine And Feminine Hands

There are many types of hands and each person is different.

But generally speaking, when drawing hands, especially when going for a more cartoony style, we tend to draw hands differently.

Feminine hands tend to have elongated fingers, but more delicate and slim.

When drawing masculine hands, we usually go for broader hands and very thick fingers.

The same goes for the nails.

With feminine hands, we draw more stylized nails and even longer than normal.

If the character were doing asks for it, we even add nail polish of different colors!

For masculine hands, we usually go for very simple nails, sometimes very squared and big.

The Anatomy Of Anime Hands

How to Draw Hands and Feet Like a Pro

Anime hands, though so smooth and simple, share their basic structure with real hands. If you understand this structure properly, everything will be easier for you! Let’s start with the bones.

As you can see, the fingers are longer than they appear. They’re “buried” inside the palm, which makes this part less flexible. That’s why for practical reasons it’s better to see fingers as starting where the palm ends. The thumb is an exception hereit’s far away from the rest and can move on its own, not being limited by the palm.

Each finger has three joints. The sections between them get progressively shorter. The thumb again is an exceptionit only has two joints, and its bones are similar in length.

Of course, we don’t really need to know the boneswe need to know their function and how they affect the look of the hand. The simplified structure of the hand consists of:

  • the heads of the forearm bones
  • the wrist
  • the palm
  • the thumb base
  • four three-segmented fingers
  • one two-segmented thumb

It’s very important to memorize this fan-shape rhythm between the joints. It influences the look of the hand, regardless of the pose of each finger. It makes it easier to guess the position of each joint in relation to the others, even the thumb’s.

How To Draw Hands And Feet

Lastly we come to the newest release in this post. How to Draw Hands and Feet by Susie Hodge was first released in early 2017 as a short intro for new artists.

The book only has 32 pages but it fully demystifies the complex process of learning hands and feet on your own. Susie has almost two decades worth of teaching experience so she knows how to write a book for beginners.

Different exercises focus on different views of the hands and feet. Youll work through six different stages of drawing to capture hands and feet at different sizes and positions.

If youre new to anatomy or just need a refresher on hands/feet then this is an excellent resource. Its short, cheap, and offers plenty of value as a reference guide.

But no matter what your skill level or how often you practice I guarantee all of these books can help you improve.

My personal favorite is The Book of a Hundred Hands by Bridgman since it gets into so much detail with challenging exercises. However this book does not cover feet.

For that I would recommend a combo of Drawing Hands & Feet along with Susie Hodges newer book How to Draw Hands and Feet. Theyre the most detailed feet-focused drawing books aside from more exhaustive anatomy reference guides.

And remember that books can only take you so far! Success as an artist will average somewhere around 20% books/study time and 80% pencil-to-paper practice time.

Learning How To Draw Feet First Steps

In many ways, feet are even more difficult than hands to draw. Lets face it they look kind of strange with their squished toes, different shapes and other inconsistencies!

However, unless youre planning to always draw people wearing shoes , its important to understand how the foot is constructed.

Basically, the foot is a kind of steep wedge shape which rises sharply as it meets the ankle, with the toes spreading out from the widest end.

As with the hands, try and see this as a 3D object and draw through the form to give you a better idea of its construction. Take note of the arch between the heel and the toes on the inward-facing side.

This anatomical drawing shows how the bones in the foot are constructed. As you can see, the foot is quite different to the hand, so understanding where all the bones sit in relation to one another will really help you to draw or paint this part of the body successfully.

The main points to note are the arch on the side of the foot and the way all the bones of the toes curve into each other. Youll also notice how the big toe has a smooth upwards-facing curve, while the other toes face down at quite a sharp angle.

Take a look at your own foot and see how it compares to these illustrations no two pairs of feet are the same, yet they all follow the same underlying bone structure.

As with the hands, dont be afraid to sketch in the bones underneath if this helps you.
