How To Draw Old Hands
Think about your character and their age.
As you draw their hands, theyll look different depending on how aged the character is. If youre young, youll notice that your hands are very simple. Almost no marks and definitely no wrinkles on the backs of the hands.
Generally speaking, the skin becomes looser, this means that youll see more wrinkles on the hands. Another detail you can add is freckles and different colored spots on the hands. This is very common to see on older people, so take advantage of that in your drawings!
Another matter that is worth mentioning, is that as you age, your hands tend to become thinner, so pay attention to that as well, when drawing old hands.
Apart from this, another little detail you can add is some scars. Both in young and older characters. We use our hands a lot and its more than common to get some scars in them. I sure can count some on my hands, but it might also be because Im just too clumsy. Oops!
Look for different hand references, take pictures of people you know, of any age. Compare them and observe the differences. Now, you just need to practice your drawings!

Analyzing The Proportions Of The Hand
Study the proportions of the fingers.
The fingers and the palm of the hand should be roughly the same length. The tip of the thumb if drawn at a 45 degree angle to the hand should reach to just slightly below the knuckle bone of the index finger.
The fingers consist of 3 parts with the distance from the tip of the fingers to the top joint being the shortest and the distance from the knuckles to the bottom join being the longest.

Learning to draw anime can be challenging, but its also a lot of fun! Anime is a blend of real-life and fantasy, so take inspiration from the world around you while also allowing your imagination to run free. Start by making the basic shape of a palm, and from there add the thumb and fingers to create different gestures. Use your own hand as a visual to get the lengths of the fingers correct, and dont forget to draw lines to represent knuckles!
Straight Lines Vs Curves
The outside of the hand is usually straighter and harder so that hands can be used for combat and self-defense, while the inside of the hand is soft in order to hold tools and touch things.
Summarising the shapes of the hand with bold straight and curved lines can make hand movements more dynamic and expressive.
The more you see the palm side of the hand the softer the shapes become.
Sometimes it can vary depending on the angle and hand shape.

Gender And Colour Preferences
Unsurprisingly, there are some differences between how and what girls and boys draw. Girls usually draw rounded shapes, including flowers, hearts, while angles, boxes, and straighter lines are characteristics of boys, along with cars, buses, etc. In general terms, there is a tendency in children to prefer to draw their own gender.
In addition, some researchers have reported that girls tend to use more colours per drawing than boys do, with a preference for warmer colours and that boys demonstrate a preference towards cooler colours .
- Black and purple suggest dominance, and can be favoured by a child who is relatively demanding. Blue is popular with children who have a caring nature and enjoy company.
- Red is the colour of excitement, may be used especially by children to dont want to miss out on anything, and is one of the most popular colours for children to use.
- Pink shows a need for love and appreciation and is favoured by girls
- Green is the colour of those who like to be different, like space, and are artistic and intelligent.
- Yellow also demonstrates intelligence and a sunny nature.

Six Steps To Realistic Hands
A step-by-step approach can help demystify the process of drawing hands, as well as make sure your illustrations look anatomically correct at every stage. Comic book artist Megan Levens uses a six-step process for hand drawing, starting with basic bone structure and building up to details like fingernails and shading.
Step 1: Start with bone structure.
Your first layer should be the bones of the hand, the carpals. Dont worry about making it pretty this step is about laying the foundation for an anatomically correct hand. Just as the bones are the framework of the body, bones will also be the framework of your drawing. Each finger radiates out at a different angle, notes Levens. They shouldnt all point straight ahead together. Daviscourt also recommends starting from the wrist at this step because the wrist is where the lines of the hand start to intersect visually.
To make your hands look realistic, consider the height differences between your fingers. The middle finger should be the tallest, with the ring finger and index finger on the downward slope of the arch, and the little finger finishing out the line. The thumb is an outlier from the rest and should sit farther apart from the others.

Step 2: Mark your knuckles.

Step 3: Draw 3D finger shapes.

Step 4: Go over your lines with a darker pencil.

Step 5: Fill in the details.

What Emotions Do Their Drawings Reveal
Many emotions can be revealed from your childs drawings, but dont get too carried away with the things they might mean until your child has had time to explain them to you. However, there are some points that researchers have found that might display what a child is really feeling.
- Detailed, careful drawings may reveal a child who feels the need to try very hard.
- Bold strokes, especially if close together, can be a sign of stress, strong feelings, determination or anger, while softer marks suggest a gentler nature.
- The quality of line can also be significant a figure drawn with light, wavering, broken lines, reveals a hesitant, insecure child who appears to think as he goes along. By contrast the bold, continual, freely drawn line is expressive of self-confidence, and a feeling of security.
When drawing figures, the size, and the relative size of the figures drawn is considered to be significant, with more important or dominant figures being drawn larger.
The absence of arms is sometimes interpreted as indicating timidity, a sign of non-aggressive children, whereas exaggerating the size of the hands is seen as symbolic of aggressive tendencies if the figure is a self-portrait. Likewise, tiny feet are seen as a sign of insecurity literally an unstable foundation.
- Impulsive child: Big figures, no necks, and asymmetry of limbs.
- Anxious child: Clouds, rain, flying birds, no eyes on the figures
- Angry child: Big hands and teeth, long arms, crossed eyes

Hand Drawing Tools Online
If you want some exercises to perfect your hand drawings there are some really awesome online tools for that.
I mentioned a lot of times, here and on my Figure Drawing course, some websites where you can practice gesture drawing.
And these are not only good for posing in general and drawing the whole human body but also hands or other particular parts of the body!
Lets see some examples that I particularly like and use a lot.
Line of action
This is a super clean and very helpful website with a cool drawing tool, Line of Action!
With this tool, you simply choose a few settings like male, female and others, and then you can select how much time youd like to practice each pose and you hit the start button Get Drawing!
The tool lets you choose between Hands, Feet or both hands and feet, so if you want to practice feet as well, thats a bonus.
If youre still beginning to learn how to draw hands I would recommend setting it up to 60 seconds or 2 minutes. Later on, you can try the 30 seconds version as well.
In my opinion, its very good to have a shorter time so that you can focus on the main shapes and not overthink the small details.
Another very similar drawing tool, Sketchdaily References.
Also has a bunch of different photo references so if youve used the previous website a lot, change to this one for a while so you dont get as many repeats.
Quickposes is another website that you can use to get a bunch of different poses.
Kids Hangouts Annual Drawing Competition
Rub-a-dub scrub! We all need to wash our hands. Draw a picture showing why its important to wash, scrub, swish, and rub our hands clean!
Get Smart wants everyone to know how important it is to wash our hands, so theyre sponsoring a drawing competition open to Pennsylvania children 8 years of age and younger.
The winning child will receive a prize, and his or her drawing will be displayed on the Know When to Say No website!
Drawings can be of anything that shows the importance of washing hands.
Here are some ideas of what you could draw:
- The icky germs dirty hands can carry!
- Everyone gets a cold from time to time that could include your friend, sister, brother or parents. What would you do if someone accidentally coughs on your book, toy or pencil before they hand it back to you?
- Something that is COOL to share, like games, books or toys. We wash our hands so we dont share germs, which are NOT cool to share!
- A picture of yourself washing your hands with all the soapy, bubbly fun!
- Everything you touch in a day. All of this stuff could have germs or get germs if you dont wash your hands!
- Pictures of when it is important to wash your hands. After lunch? Before bed? After playing with pets?
- Draw a germ-fighting hero! Does the hero battle icky germs with soap and water or does he let the germs win?
- What your hands look like before and after you wash them!
Details for the 2015 competition will be released June 2015.
