Make A Majestic Mountain Drawing
Who doesnt get inspired when looking at the awesome majesty of a mountain range? Artists for centuries have been struggling with how to draw mountains. And although mountains may be an intimidating subject, especially if youre a beginning artist, they are something that can be mastered with practice. Ive put together this step-by-step guide to learn how to draw a mountain in hopes it will give you a foundation to take your mountain drawing to new heights.
List of Supplies
Add A Bit More Contrast Close To The Divider Lines
To add a bit more contrast to these mountains, I cleaned my brush and added just mars black.
I painted some angular black lines just on the parts of the mountains close to the divider line.
It helps to use the side of the brush to get a nice sharp angle in these areas.
Just a bit of pure black here and there on the right side close to the divider line not too much!
Use A Piece Of Chalk To Divide All The Mountains In Half Vertically With Jagged Lines
This next step is fun and it helps to really get an overall picture of how these mountains will begin to look like real mountains!
Basically you need a white piece of chalk.
Make sure the gray paint is dry!
Start at the top tip of each of your mountains and draw a sort of jagged line that divides each mountain in half vertically.
I swayed my jagged vertical line slightly to the left as I approached the bottom of the mountain.
Continue adding the divider line with your chalk to each of the mountain peaks.
Vary these lines so that they do not look all the same on each mountain peak.
If you want to add a small mountain in front of the larger mountains, simply use the chalk to draw it in. I drew the peak first
Then I drew the zig-zag divider.

Major Planes And Shadows
Now that you have learned to see planes in the rock formations around you it’s time to put it into practice.
Start off by drawing the outlines of some rocks around you, just as you did in step 2. Then refine the shapes by adding the major planes. You can use some rough shading as well, if you like.
Remember that this doesn’t need to be absolutely faithful to the original. You can change and simplify wherever you like. If youre not entirely sure about a plane, just guess, dont overthink it.
Now, the principle to create more complicated rock patterns with more planes is exactly the same as with the major ones.
The size and number of planes in any given rock simply depends on how detailed you want your drawing to be. Add them layer by layer, break up the major planes into smaller ones and those again, until youre satisfied.

When you get into landscape drawing or painting, learning how to draw mountains is essential. In this post, we will be teaching you how in three ways with step-by-step tutorials. Keep reading!
Learning how to draw mountains will teach you how the concept of light and shadow works. This subject can be intimidating to draw especially for beginners but weve created an easy-to-follow tutorial so you can draw them with ease like a pro.
Keep practicing and you will soon master it. Of course, dont forget to have fun and enjoy the process.
Add Some Shadows To The Left Sides Of The Mountains With Mars Black
Next I did the exact opposite to the left side. I did some dry brush texture of black over the white.
Basically, wipe your brush . Then dip the tip in mars black.
Paint small strokes of dry brush black texture marks in some of the areas only on the left white sides of the mountains.
Dip your brush in more titanium white to blend that black texture in slightly so that black doesnt take over.
Be very careful and use a light hand so this black doesnt get too dark in this area.
Drag the strokes down in an angle. The point is to not mix it all to the same color, it needs to be an unmixed gray.
Different Ways To Draw Rocks
There are many approaches to drawing rocks and mountains, from abstract to photorealistic, and everything in between.
Below you can see two extremes. The first sketch is very rough, but as you see, even though there is no shading or detail you can easily see the mountain range.
The second drawing on the other hand is very realistic and would have taken quite a while.
From these examples we can learn that it takes a lot less effort than you might think to draw recognisable rocks. Which is great for us because it means its entirely up to our personal preference how realistic we want it.

How To Draw Rocks And Mountains In A Quick Landscape Sketch
Mountains, rocks and stones aren’t easy to draw for anyone. Their irregular shapes and complicated shadows pose a challenge for beginners as well as pros. But one that we’ll tackle today.
These simple tricks and exercises will help you find the right technique and with a bit of perseverance those rocks won’t be intimidating any longer.
Draw An Outline Of The Front Mountain
In this case there will be three mountains in total. One larger one in the front and two more distant ones behind it.
Draw the larger mountain first as shown in the example. Make it wide at the bottom and narrower towards the top as you would generally expect a mountain to look like but dont make the top overly pointy. You should also deliberately make your lines a little wobbly as mountains tend to have uneven surfaces.
Leave the bottom of the mountain open with no outline. Adding one there will make the drawing seem odd like the mountain has been cut off.

Drawing Mountain With Color
In this method number three, I will be showing you how easily you can draw mountains with colors. The six steps in this method are super easy.
Step 1- In step number one, draw a perfect circle at first for the frame. Use a compass if you can not draw free hand.
Step 2- Draw a straight horizontal line in the lower part of the picture. Then, draw a pyramid type triangle. After that, draw the slant lines, in the left corner of the circle and in the right corner of the circle, just like given in the picture.
Step 3- Now according to the sharp straight lines of the heights, drawing curved lines means wavy lines. And erase the rest of the lines.
Step 4- Now draw a small circle for the sun. As I am showing the sun set here. Draw the sun in the right top corner of the circle.
Step 5- Now color the background with whatever you want. Here Ive used orange shades of color.
Step 6- In the final step, now color the heights black , where there is no sunlight. And color the other part of massif kind of whitish and grayish type where there are the rays of sun set light falling. Color the grassy part green. And then a little blue color as water.
As you can see I have drawn a few trees on the left side. You can draw the trees by using an art marker.

It’s A Lot More Fun To Excel At Something Simple Than To Fail At Something Difficult
If you start with the simplest possible way of drawing rocks and master that, you can move on to a difficulty one level above it, and so on.
It’ll take a while to get where you might want to be, but it’ll be a lot less frustrating. It’s more fun to excel at something simple than to fail at something difficult, after all.
Rock Drawings By Famous Artists
While it is true that rocks and mountains are not the most popular subject in the arts, I have found four lovely sketches for you from the major players in the arts, van Gogh, da Vinci, Rembrandt and Monet.
Note how very different their approaches and the level of detail and texture are. Yet they all reveal a lot of experience and look simply terrific.

A Quick Word On Composition
A simple rock or mountain can often look a little boring on its own. But a group of rocks, overlapping or even partially stacked, makes for a compelling scene.
Overlapping is a super simple perspective technique. For a more realistic and intriguing view it’s almost always a good idea to find several rocks on a horizontal plane where some of them are slightly closer to you than others.
Adding other materials and textures is a great way to balance the composition. Grass, long or short, moss, lichen, soil or other plant debris, all of these can add interest to an otherwise singular picture.
How To Paint Mountains In 4 Steps
The best part of this mountain painting is that you can break it down in 4 steps. Use it to recreate any mountain of any shape, size and orientation.
Before starting the first step, paint in the background sky in any color. Leave to dry before painting your mountain scene. This will make it easier and make the sky look more realistic and in the background.
See the step by step tutorial below where I will show you how to recreate the pink sunset sky.
1. Paint in your mountain shape with base coat/undercoat
Mountains are not straight angular triangles like most of us would draw one instinctively. Instead they are jaggedly/wobbly lines that form peaks. And each mountain has a different shape too they are not identical in shape. Keeping those 2 key things in mind, take some black paint and a 1/4 flat brush, and paint in your mountain range outline.
Keep your strokes nice and loose. It helps to hold your paintbrush in the middle or end of the handle to get random and shaky and random lines.
Once you have your rough shape of the mountains, fill in with a basecoat/undercoat of black paint. Leave to dry
2. Draw A Squiggly Line Down The Middle of Each Mountain
Taking a piece of chalk or a pencil and draw squiggly verticle lines in the middle of each mountain. Just like the mountain shape, keep these lines nice and loose and random and not uniform and nor straight
3. Paint In The Base Layer Of Snow On The Mountain
4. Paint In The Highlighted Snow

Drawing Mountain Very Easy Way
As you can see the picture, now I will be drawing this mountain very easily in just three steps. First pick the position in the paper, where you will be drawing it.
Step 1- Draw a simple horizontal straight line at first. Then, proportionally draw two simple small vertical straight lines by using pencil.
After that, draw a vertical straight line proportionally in the middle. And this line in the middle will be a bit longer than the other two lines as you can see.
Step 2- Draw triangle type shapes for the outline of the peaks. Start drawing lines from the top of the point of the straight vertical parallel lines. Then slope down the lines. Draw these lines lightly, as they will be erased later.
Step3- Now turn the straight sloped lines into curved lines. And erase the straight sloped lines. Once you are done with drawing the sloped lines and erasing the straight lines, now time to draw the snowflakes.
At the peak of those draw medium different sizes of small curves.
Step 4- Time to color it. Here I have used water color. Use a blender for making it lighter from the darker shade. Here Ive used water brush pen to blend the color from darker to lighter.
Here you are done with the snowy mountains. This was the method number one of drawing it very easily. With just four easy steps. Now let us move on to method number two.
Draw The Basic Line Art
Now that you are happy with the shape of your mountain range, you can begin adding in the actual line work that will define each mountain. If you are working digitally, just create a new layer above your sketches and begin to draw the final line work.
For this particular style you will want the shape of the mountains to have multiple secondary peaks and look a little bumpy. The peaks or bumps should be sharper and more dramatic on larger mountains, with them gradually smoothing on smaller mountains or foothills.

Paint The Left Side Of All The Divider Lines With Titanium White
Next use your #4 bright flat brush and the color titanium white.
On the left side of all your divider lines, paint titanium white.
Make sure that the direction of the strokes are going diagonally as shown below. Use the full width of the brush.
The white does not have to be 100% opaque.
This is a thin layer of white and I can still see a small amount of the base gray color showing through.
Continue on painting the left side of all your divider lines.
I am using the full width of my brush, dragging the white in the same diagonal direction and allowing a tiny bit of the gray to still show through.
The white goes all the way to the bottom base of the mountain so it may have to overlap the mountain next to it.
This is how you define which mountain is overlapping which mountain.
