Shaded Top Down Hills

Start by drawing broken lines around the rough shapes of the hills. Notice that this is the same set of hills as in 1. above. In this style, were drawing the lines along the slopes, rather than across the slopes. This is almost like a contour map with very broken contours.

Note that for a mountain, we draw the ridge, and then the crests that run down from the ridge. In contrast, here the crest of the hill is our whitespace.

This already gives a rough indication of where the hills are, but we can go further and add shading to clearly indicate the hills:

Here Ive used a couple of overlay layers, and used a grungy brush, with a dark colour to block in shadows on the SE side of the hills. Note that I dont add a lot of shade to the crest of the hills. Then Ive taken a very light colour, and a hard round brush, and blocked in the lighter crests of the hills, and the NW side of the hills.

These effects combined, give an effective depiction of hills. Once you have the light and shade in, you can actually decrease or even remove the lines.

Make sure youve read the sections On File Resolutions and Dimensions in Fantasy Map Design Basics.

As a general guide, the larger the surface area youre trying to show, the larger the map canvas should be. If you plan on printing your maps , starting with a template canvas that matches the dimensions you are going to print at is a good idea. You can always scale down if you feel like working at the larger size is burdensome.

For this island, Im going to size the map to 2400 by 3600 pixels at 300dpi. This will allow me to work with it easily but it will still look good when printed at a poster size.

Draw In Secondary Ridge Lines

The main mountain ridge isnt a monolithic unbroken ridge. There will be spurs that broaden the mountains on either side. If one side of the mountain range is a dramatic escarpment, and the other is more broken and spreading that can make for a very striking feature. Here Ive gone for a couple of longer ridges breaking off from the main ridge.

at the same time, add in secondary spurs from the larger mountains in the ridge. This helps to define a bit of structure, and call out the dominant peaks.

    Detail The Surrounding Terrain

You may have noticed that it can be a little challenging to tell the difference between a line thats a stream and one thats just a detail on a mountain.

A way to overcome this is to help the river stand out more by drawing contour lines that follow the river as if its cutting through the mountains.

You can then add thin, broken lines around the outside of the mountain range to give a sense of contour that indicates foot hills.

Now, its time to start adding some shading!

    Paint In The Highlights

Finally, the last thing to do is paint in some highlights on the opposite side of your mountains. Use a color that is based on your paper background but obviously lightened. In this case the color I used was #f2eae2.

Just like the deepest shadows, your brightest highlights should be near the top of the mountain where the light hits most directly. I tend to prefer a lighter touch with the highlights so the mountains dont end up looking too reflective.

How To Draw Isometric Hand Drawn Mountains

Todays tutorial is a quick walkthrough for isometric or forced perspective mountains. This is entirely software agnostic, and is the starting point for maps like this or this.

This sketch was drawn with a pen, but can equally be done in Gimp with a mouse, or Photoshop with a tablet.

  • Define the silhouettes for your mountains. They can be jagged, they can be smooth. Allow your hand to wander and create different shapes. It helps to start with the closest mountain and work to the farthest
  • Draw the ridge line. Start at the highest point on a mountain and draw a ridge line to the next in the line of mountains. Dont draw directly to the next peak, offset the end of the line. That will make it look like the ridge drops down and then comes up the far side where its hidden from the viewer.
  • Add in the details. Here Ive taken lines from all of the mini-peaks and drawn flowing lines down the sides of the mountains. Add in a few secondary ridge lines running off down to ground level
  • At this point you have your mountain range. Any more detail added with colour or tone will add to the effect, but you can leave it at this and itll read just fine as a mountain range. This tip originally appeared on G+ and on .

    Take Three: Freehand Drawing

This is the method I most often use because I find it to be the prettiest with the style I like to use. Its advantage is that it is super flexible and very pretty but it has disadvantages in that it is slower to do, it assuredly requires a pen tablet, and you need to have some basic drawing skills.

I modified my technique from one I originally found at Fantastic Maps .

Youre going to want a pen tablet for this. Doing this with a trackpoint or a mouse is going to be tedious. As Ramirez said to MacLeod in Highlander: I would spare you that pain.

Youre going to make a lot of layers. Youll want to label them in such a way that you can easily remember what you did, which means including your brush settings in the layers name. Each layer will have a purpose. Youre making separate layers so that you can adjust their blend modes and opacity values independently later.

While I recommended making individual ranges their own layers when working in shapes, dont do this here.

Youll need to make several layers.

    Mountain Ranges

    • Ridgeline in Normal mode
    • Thin Lights in Screen mode
    • Thin Darks in Multiply mode
    • Fat Lights in Screen mode
    • Fat Darks in Multiply mode
    • Set the blend mode of the Mountain Ranges layer group to Overlay.

    Drawing the Ridge Lines

First, draw the mountain ranges ridge lines.

  • Set your paint color to a dark grey .
  • Once youve got that how you like it, turn off visibility of the mountain range lines layer.
